Abstract. From the southern region of Venezuela, a new species of Hydrophilidae belonging to the genus Anacaena Thomson is described. Anacaena gransabanensis nov. sp., was found in a hygropetric habitat within a hydroecological environment of horizontal runoff on a liminc/lotic hydroecological system. The new species presents the typical characters of the genus as the mentum slightly low- cut anteromedially, prosternum not carinate and mesoventrites protruding. Illustrations of the male genitalia and other structures of diagnostic interest are presented. Key words: Anacaenini, Anacaena, taxonomy, Aponwao River, Bolívar State, Gran Sabana, Mareman Paru River. (Figs. 1-4) Diagnosis. SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA).

Crcnitis apicalis REITTER is recorded for the first time from China, liemsns japonicus SHARP is recorded for the first time from Taiwan. Key words: Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae, Hydrophilinae, China Introduction The family Hydrophilidae contains 3 subfamilies (Hydrophilinae, Horclophinac and Sphaeri- diinac), about 140 genera and more than 2000 species. The subfamily Horelophinac contains one aquatic genus, Horeloplms d'ORCHYMONT, from New Zealand. With the exception of a few genera (e.g. Coelostoma BRÜLLE, Phacnostoma d'ORCHYMONT, Cocloctenus BALFOUR-BROWNE) Sphaeridiinae arc terrestrial or at most semiaquatic, living in a variety of habitats (leaf litter, dung, carrion, decaying organic matter, rotten wood, wet forest floor, ant nests, ...). This subfamily contains about 90 genera. They arc not included in this chapter. Though the ecological preferences of water beetles arc not always the same in areas far from one another, in most cases the observations on Hydrophilinae collected in China correspond to those obtained in Europe or North America.

Assemblages of Coleoptera, shallow lakes, environmental variables, Iberian Peninsula, multivariate analysis. Abstract. Aquatic Coleoptera in shallow lakes associated with the Canal de Castilla (Palencia Province, Spain) in the northern Ibe rian Meseta were sampled over the course of a year (spring 1998-winter 1999). These waterbodies are typical plateau wetlands with dense vegetation and vary in permanence and area (from 3.3 ha to 29.35 ha). Oxygen concentration, conductivity and pH were recorded at the time of sampling. Lake area, depth, water permanence and type of vegetation were also taken into account. Ninety two species were collected. Species richness was high in comparison with other wetlands in Spain. The assemblage structure was assessed in terms of three community parameters: richness, abundance and diversity (Shannon index). Their relationships with envi ronmental variables were explored using correlation coefficients. The assemblage composition was analysed by multivariate tech niques. First, the sites were classified by means of TWINSPAN. The presence of each species in the different TWINSPAN groups was used to assess their habitat preferences.
