One of the important functions of the NGRBA is to prepare and implement a Ganga River Basin Management Plan (GRBMP). A Consortium of 7 Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) has been given the responsibility of preparing Ganga River Basin Management Plan (GRBMP) by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), GOI, New Delhi. Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) has been signed between 7 IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and MoEF for this purpose on July 6, 2010. This report is one of the many reports prepared by IITs to describe the strategy, information, methodology, analysis and suggestions and recommendations in developing Ganga River Basin Management Plan (GRBMP). The overall Frame Work for documentation of GRBMP and Indexing of Reports is presented on the inside cover page. There are two aspects to the development of GRBMP.

  • Towns of India: Status of Demography, Economy, Social Structures, Housing and Basic Infrastructure
Towns of India Status of Demography, Economy, Social Structures, Housing and Basic Infrastructure HSMI – HUDCO Chair – NIUA Collaborative Research 2016 Towns of India Status of Demography, Economy, Social Structures, Housing and Basic Infrastructure HSMI – HUDCO Chair – NIUA Collaborative Research 2016 Foreword An increasing number of people live in small and medium-sized towns in the periphery of large cities as the world completes its process of urban transition. India is no exception to this phenomenon. It is in these towns where national economies are to be built, solutions to global challenges such as inequality and the impacts of climate change are to be addressed, and future generations are to be educated. The reality in India, however, suggests that the small towns are not fully integrated in the urban fabric of the nation. They have enormous backlogs in economic infrastructure, weak human capacity, high levels of under unemployment and unemployment, and extremely weak local economies. However, with their growing numbers – there are more than 2,500 new towns added in the last Population Census– the role of small and medium-sized towns in the national economy will have a significant influence upon the future social and economic development of larger geographic regions. If these towns were better equipped to steer their economic assets and development, the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could be increased, with significant benefits reducing rural poverty in the hinterlands. This research on small towns, those below 100,000 population, was conducted at the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), New Delhi, under Phase III of the HUDCO Chair project during the period 2015-16.

  • Muslims Have a Much Higher Presence in the Towns of Uttar Pradesh
Muslims have a much higher presence in the towns of Uttar Pradesh In our earlier note on Uttar Pradesh, we noticed that the overall share of Muslims and growth in their share is not very high outside a pocket of eight districts in the western UP. In that note, we also indicated that the share and growth of urban Muslims in this pocket is considerably higher than in the total population. The issue of the exodus of Hindus from some of the towns of this pocket, especially towns like Kairana and Kandhla, has suddenly acquired salience. In view of this, we present further details of the religious demography of urban Uttar Pradesh. Share of Muslims in the urban population of the State is much higher than their average share in the total population. They form 32.2 percent of the urban population, while they form less than 20 percent of the total and only 15.6 percent of the rural population. What is even more important is that they have an overwhelming presence in several towns. Muslims are in a majority in 231 of the total 915 towns counted in the State in 2011. Among these 231 towns, there are 15 where the share of Muslims is above 90 percent, 37 where their share is between 80 and 90 percent and another 47 where they form 70 to 80 percent of the population. Of the 231 Muslim-majority towns in the State, 103 are in the 8 districts of West UP where the Muslim presence is otherwise high. But the remaining 128 are spread over the whole State, and there are Muslims-majority towns in even those districts where their overall presence is very low.
