The majority of these studies have focused on the interaction between a local language and a non-local language. In this project, I propose an analysis of the mixture of two world languages (Spanish and English), which can be categorised as both local and non-local. I do this through the analysis of the enormously successful reggaeton genre, which is characterised by its use of Spanglish. I used two data types to inform my research: a corpus of code-switching instances in top 20 reggaeton songs, and a questionnaire on attitudes towards Spanglish in general and in music. I collected 200 answers to the questionnaire – half from American English-speakers, and the other half from Spanish-speaking Hispanics of various nationalities. -

La cantante debutó em 1995 con el álbum Pies Descalzos, un álbum publicado por las disqueras Sony y Columbia Records. Muchas canciones de este álbum resultaron exitosas y muy escuchadas por el mercado hispanoamericano como Pies descalzos sueños blancos, Estoy Aquí y Antología. Por ese entonces, se dio a conocer como una artista de balada pop, con letras dedicadas al amor y al desamor. Podría afirmarse que Shakira impuso una moda, tanto en su imagen con su largo y desalineado pelo negro natural como con su particular tono de voz identificado con las canciones en general de esa época, como también las letras, ritmos y tonos. La simple puesta en escena con una guitarra generó un estilo muy propio y particular, que quizá no haya sido igualado por otras artistas, por lo menos en cuanto a canciones románticas. Con el correr de los años, su estilo musical ha ido cambiando. Sus temas nuevos son un mezcla entre reggaetón y electropop. Shakira ha querido modernizarse y seguir una carrera con un estilo que vende mucho como es el reggaetón, por lo que ha realizado trabajos en conjunto con diferentes exponentes del género. -

Objection (Tango) - Shakira – Notes Activity type: vocabulary, gap fill, listening for specific words, rhyming words. Time: 40 mins. Note: Objection is taken from Shakira’s 2001 album “Laundry Service”. Its rhythm is similar to the Uruguayan-Argentinian tango La Cumparsita, a musical piece written by Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez in 1919. La Cumparsita is one of the most famous and recognizable tango songs of all time; the Argentinean team marched to it in the Olympic Games of Sydney 2000. Pre-listening activities: 1) Give each student a copy of the worksheet. Students can work in pairs or small groups to complete Exercise 1) – the first to complete the exercise is the winner. Vocabulary note: In the song Shakira erroneously sings silicon /’sɪlɪkən/ (a chemical element), although she means silicone /’sɪlɪkəʊn/, in this context meaning breast implants!
