Everywhere else biologists have studied life on our planet, they’ve found communities of life, but today, biologists announced they have discovered an ecosystem that contains just a single species of bacteria. www.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/10/one-organism-ec/ 1/32 3/19/14 One-Organism Ecosystem Discovered in African Gold Mine - Wired Science In all other known ecosystems, the key functions of life — harvesting energy and elements like carbon and nitrogen from the environment — have been shared among different species. But in the water of the Mponeng gold mine, two miles under the earth’s surface, Desulforudis audaxviator carries out all of those functions by itself. In short, it’s the tidiest package of life found yet. "It is possible to pack everything necessary for maintaining life into one genome," said Dylan Chivian of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. All known life forms need carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and an energy source to live. Plants need nitrogen, but can’t just pull it from the atmosphere and start using it to make amino acids. Instead, they rely on archaea for that task. Interconnections like these form the basis of an ecosystem, often cheesily called the ‘web of life’. What makes D. audaxviator so special is that its genome, cobbled together from bacterial and archaeal genes, can carry out all life’s functions by itself. That could make the bug a prime candidate for any attempt to see if Earth’s microbes could live in some other extreme environment within the solar system. "Since it could live on its own on Earth, if it were given a matching habitat elsewhere, it could live," said Chivian. Images: 1. Inside a tunnel in the Mponeng mine. Courtesy Anglo Gold. 2. All inhabitants work to supply their corner of the universe with gold, silver, platinum and other metals. But... they are being killed by a monster in the depths of the mines. It turns out that they have stumbled across a One-Organism Ecosystem in Their Gold Mine!!! And the organism doesn't want them there. ELLIOTT has been approved for the Department of Political Science and the College of Arts and Sciences by Julie A. White Associate Professor of Political Science Benjamin M. Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT ELLIOTT, LAUREN R., M.A., August 2009, Political Science Public Engagement and the Internet or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Net (105 pp.) Director of Thesis: Julie A. White In the past decade, Americans have rapidly embraced the Internet for a variety of uses. The proliferation of this new technology has changed the ways in which individuals interact with one another, and the ways in which they are organized to partake in political and/or otherwise public issues. It has also made it easier for citizens to become organizers themselves. As the Internet is a relatively new phenomenon in American culture, its implications for public engagement remain fairly unexplored. The ever-changing functions and demographic base of the Web require researchers to consider the most recent data and trends. In this thesis, I posit a conception of citizen participation called public engagement, which I situate in the context of Internet-use.

  • George W. Bush and Barack Obama. a Pragmatics Approach
ROMANIAN JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES RJES 16 /2019 DOI: 10.1515/RJES-2019-0016 US PRESIDENTS’ POLITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS: GEORGE W. BUSH AND BARACK OBAMA. A PRAGMATICS APPROACH ABBAS HUSSEIN TARISH West University of Timişoara Abstract: An examination of the political discourse of presidents establishes an understanding of the factors that influence word choice and communication. Most notably, the context provided by presidents in their political discourse conveys the meaning intended by the speeches, which then influences the way the public reacts to what they have to say. Through knowledge of these factors, linguists can develop a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between language and the perceptions of American presidents by both Americans and non-Americans. The purpose of this paper is to examine the political discourse of two American presidents – George W. Bush and Barack Obama – in order to identify the overall message intended by their speeches and the factors that influence their discourse. Keywords: discourse analysis, linguistics, pragmatics, US presidents 1. Introduction Language in actions is referred to as pragmatic language where it is impossible to understand the message unless you know what is going on (Halliday and Hasan 1985:6). The political discourses of Bush and Obama are significantly different from each other. In fact, these particular presidents, despite both serving recently, can be discussed to show the vastly different approaches of politicians in communication and discourse. Analysing their discourses is revealing of the differences among politicians in the context of their linguistic styles, as well as in understanding the influence of their personalities on their communication approaches.

Debatin This qualitative study explores the impact of new media, specifically social media and campaign websites with greater direct user participation and involvement. With the historic election of the first black president of the United States, Barack Obama, and the candidacy of the first Republican woman nominated for vice-president, Sarah Palin, the 2008 presidential and vice-presidential campaigns remain important for study. “Political Campaigning 2.0” analyzes campaign and user-generated web content covering a wide array of new media: Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Wikipedia, Twitter, and campaign websites. The study is based on Erving Goffman’s theories of Framing and Impression Management and complemented with James Grunig’s Situational Theory of Publics.

All Rights Reserved. 2 This thesis titled New Directions in Networked Activism and Online Social Movement Mobilization: The Case of Anonymous and Project Chanology by PATRICK C. UNDERWOOD has been approved for the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the College of Arts and Sciences by Howard T. Welser Assistant Professor of Sociology Benjamin M. Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT UNDERWOOD, PATRICK C., M.A., June 2009, Sociology New Directions in Networked Activism and Online Social Movement Mobilization: The Case of Anonymous and Project Chanology (242 pp.) Director of Thesis: Howard T. Welser The present study explores the structural aspects of online communities and the potential of online communications technologies for social movement mobilization. This is accomplished through an examination of the online collective known as Anonymous and this group’s social movement activism targeted against the Church of Scientology. The research is primarily concerned with answering questions of how the social structural contexts of Anonymous as an online community influenced the growth and development of Project Chanology, how Anonymous is able to establish insider status and group boundaries without access to traditional markers of identity, and what, if any, form of leadership developed within Chanology. To answer these questions, a hybrid methodology consisting of a qualitative case study and network analysis is developed.
