Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 4, 2014 Devils-Sabres Preview By Nicolino DiBenedetto Associated Press January 4, 2014 The Buffalo Sabres may own the fewest points in the NHL, but they've hardly resembled the league's worst team lately at home. Ryan Miller has had a hand in that success. Miller will likely be in net looking to win a sixth straight home game, as the Sabres face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. Buffalo (11-26-4) not only has the worst record in the league, its average of 1.63 goals ranks last - 0.60 behind Minnesota for 29th. The Sabres fell 4-1 at Minnesota on Thursday, losing their 11th straight on the road. "It's just one of those things where when we're bad, we're bad," interim coach Ted Nolan said. They've been very good at home, however, going 5-0-1 in their last six home games. They're averaging 2.75 goals to win four straight there for the first time since a five-game streak from Feb. 19-March 12, 2012. Miller has been superb at home, compiling a 1.34 goals-against average and .962 save percentage while winning his last five games in Buffalo. He last won six straight there from Nov. 13-Dec. 9, 2010. Miller, named to the U.S. Olympic team earlier this week, may have a chance to equal that run since he's 4-1-1 with a 1.60 GAA and a shutout over his last six home meetings with the Devils (17-17-8).

  • Press Clips October 12, 2013 Sabres-Blackhawks Preview by Nicolino Dibenedetto Associated Press October 12, 2013
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 12, 2013 Sabres-Blackhawks Preview By Nicolino DiBenedetto Associated Press October 12, 2013 The Buffalo Sabres are off to their worst start in 14 years. Facing the reigning Stanley Cup champions on the road isn't likely to change that. The Sabres attempt to avoid a sixth straight defeat Saturday night when they meet the Chicago Blackhawks. Buffalo (0-4-1) hasn't endured a worst start to a season since going 0-5-2 to begin 1999-2000. The Sabres have shown few signs of ending their struggles, getting outscored 14-5 while going 2 for 18 on the power play. "We have guys in here that can make plays," goaltender Ryan Miller said. "We just have to get past this little hump we're having trouble with and you can't just work hard, get a puck and not do anything with it. We have to start doing things with it." Buffalo didn't do much Thursday, giving up three first-period goals in a 4-1 home loss to Columbus. Thomas Vanek and Cody Hodgson have been among the few offensive bright spots with four points each over the past three games. Those two have combined for eight of the team's 13 points this season. Vanek, the captain for home games, had team highs of 20 goals and 41 points in 38 games last season. He's been limited to two assists in four career visits to Chicago. Hodgson has four points in four meetings with the Blackhawks, who have won three straight games versus Buffalo, including the last two at the United Center.

  • Dobber's 2010-11 Fantasy Guide
DOBBER’S 2010-11 FANTASY GUIDE DOBBERHOCKEY.COM – HOME OF THE TOP 300 FANTASY PLAYERS I think we’re at the point in the fantasy hockey universe where DobberHockey.com is either known in a fantasy league, or the GM’s are sleeping. Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October. Make sure you download the latest prior to heading into your draft (and don’t ask me on one day if I’ll be updating the next day – I get so many of those that I am unable to answer them all, just download as late as you can). Any updates beyond this original release will be in bold blue.

  • MEDIA GUIDE 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship a Chance to See the Best Ice Hockey Players
MEDIA GUIDE 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship A chance to see the best ice hockey players One misconception about the IIHF World Junior Championships is that it features “future” stars. If you look at the development of the event, you will realize that this magnificent tournament features players who are world class stars already today. The World Juniors also show, by the way, how quickly a year goes by. Let’s take you back to December 2012 and the IIHF World U20 event in Ufa, Russia. Canada’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who led the tournament in scoring with 15 points in 6 games is today an integral part of the Edmonton Oilers while his countrymen Jonathan Huberdeau (9 points in 6 games in Ufa) and Mark Scheifele (8 points in 6 games) are the future of the Florida Panthers and Winnipeg Jets respectively. USA’s All-Star defenseman and gold winner in Ufa, Jacob Trouba, is playing sensationally well for the Winnipeg while teammate Alex Galchenyuk personifies the new generation Montreal Canadiens. Last year’s dominating Finns Joel Armia and Markus Granlund have both signed NHL contracts and are biding their time in the AHL, but Swedes Filip Forsberg, Elias Lindholm and Rickard Rakell have all played NHL games this season. So think about this when you watch the 38th IIHF World Junior event in Malmö – you may most likely have one chance to see the best players. Next year they are probably celebrated professionals either in the NHL or in any of the European leagues. A good example of the natural turnover is the defending World Champion United States: from last year’s golden roster in Ufa only there are only three returnees on the 2014 team.

  • Daily Press Clips September 17, 2013 Ristolainen Showing He Might Be NHL-Ready by John Vogl Buffalo News September 16, 2013
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips September 17, 2013 Ristolainen showing he might be NHL-ready By John Vogl Buffalo News September 16, 2013 It seems the scouts and draft analysts knew what they were talking about. They said Rasmus Ristolainen was an NHL-ready prospect, someone who might be able to come into his first training camp and earn a roster spot. Ristolainen is not locked in yet, but he sure looks like he belongs. Ristolainen, selected eighth overall by the Sabres in June, has brought a mature game to Buffalo’s camp. The big defenseman impresses during practice and held his own during his preseason debut Sunday. He’ll likely get another chance tonight when the Sabres visit the Columbus Blue Jackets (7 p.m., Radio 550 AM). If Ristolainen keeps doing well, he could be on the opening-day roster Oct. 2. “I think I’m ready,” Ristolainen said Monday. “I think my style is the kind that I can play right away. That’s my goal. I set this goal at the start of summer, and I was working all summer to make the team.” Ristolainen’s confidence comes from fitting in immediately. The 18-year-old spent the last two seasons playing professionally in his native Finland. He arrived in Buffalo as a mature adult, not a wide-eyed teen who’s just happy to be on the ice. “He’s a man, an 18-year-old man,” said defense partner Mike Weber. “He’s a big boy, skates pretty well, moves the puck really well.

  • Press Clips September 19, 2013 Girgensons Working to Force Way Onto Sabres by Mike Harrington Buffalo News September 18, 2013
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips September 19, 2013 Girgensons working to force way onto Sabres By Mike Harrington Buffalo News September 18, 2013 There are some decisions to be made at the bottom rungs of the defense corps, but the most interesting story line developing at Buffalo Sabres training camp is the play of Zemgus Girgensons. With seemingly few spots available, the 19-year-old Latvian winger is trying to force his way on to the roster. Girgensons has been a standout in camp and in the first two exhibition games. If he keeps it up, it may be hard for the Sabres to send him back to Rochester. The Sabres open the First Niagara Center portion of the preseason with two games in three days, tonight at 7 against Carolina (Radio 550 AM) and Saturday against Toronto. Girgensons is getting a long look and will certainly play in at least one of those games. He might play in both. Girgensons is the only Sabre with three points in the first two games, collecting two goals in Sunday’s shootout win in Montreal and an assist in Tuesday’s victory in Columbus. The 6-foot-2, 194-pounder played more than 34 minutes and has a plus-3 rating. His second goal in Montreal was a sensational effort of power down the right- wing boards, finished by a sizzling snap shot past rookie goaltender Zach Fucale. “Most people talk about if I’m able to put up points. That’s one of the things I’ve been working on,” Girgensons said this week.

  • Buffalo Sabres Digital Press
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 18, 2014 Blue Jackets-Sabres Preview By Nicolino DiBenedetto Associated Press January 18, 2014 Cam Atkinson and Sergei Bobrovsky are big reasons why the Columbus Blue Jackets are on the cusp of matching the longest winning streak in franchise history. Only one of them, however, may be on the ice to try helping the team re- write the record book. While Bobrovsky's status is unknown, Atkinson will look to continue his scoring barrage when the visiting Blue Jackets go for a sixth straight win Saturday night against the Buffalo Sabres. Columbus (23-20-4) has won five in a row after beating Washington 5-1 on Friday. The team's only six-game winning streak was from March 24-April 3, 2006. "When we're at our best, all four lines are definitely buzzing and creating some chances," said Atkinson, who scored twice. Atkinson has made the most of his recent chances, scoring five goals in five games to equal his total from the previous 25. The right wing, whose 15 goals are a career high, tallied once and added an assist in a 4-1 win at Buffalo on Oct. 10. Bobrovsky has won six straight starts with a 1.38 goals-against average and .955 save percentage. That stretch does include a 12-game absence due to a groin injury, but he's picked up where he left off. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner has won four straight with a 1.48 GAA since his return after a 26-save performance Friday.
