Sora Park is the Associate Dean of Research for the Faculty of Arts & Design and Professor of Communication at the University of Canberra. Her research focuses on digital media users, media markets and media policy. She is the Leader of the Digital News Report: Australia project. Jee Young Lee is the Digital News Report Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the News & Media Research Centre and Lecturer at the Faculty of Arts & Design, University of Canberra. Her research focuses on digital inclusion practices and policies, particularly for emerging digitally excluded social groups and the growing digital media consumption in emerging markets. Kieran McGuinness is a Research Associate for the Digital News Report project. He is a current PhD candidate with the News & Media Research Centre. His research looks at defence journalism and the role of the news media in shaping political discourses of military planning and procurement. Saffron Howden is a journalist, independent researcher, former trainer with the Google News Initiative, and editor of Crinkling News. More information at: www.canberra.edu.au/nmrc EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The contraction of news services in regional Australia over the past decade has led to increasing concern about the future of journalism in Regional Australia. There have been government and industry programmes developed to assist regional journalism, but the voices of practitioners are often missing from the debate. The central aim of this study was to find out what regional journalists themselves need to keep serving their communities and how they see the future. This report is based on a survey of 307 regional journalists working TV, radio, print and online, and 31 in-depth interviews. The research was conducted prior to the outbreak of COVID-19. KEY FINDINGS Regional journalists are very busy multitaskers who work across a range of platforms, roles and stories. The majority are in full-time employment (86%), but female journalists and those working for independent local outlets are more likely to be part-time. This axiom of journalism is at no time more apposite than in this terror-ridden post-9/11 world. Increasingly, nation-states and activist bloggers are realising that the power of the media and those who control it set the agenda for world politics and governance. Yet journalism educators reflexively trust this maxim among their charges to received wisdom. Or pedantically go on presuming this aphorism to be ingrained in them by the time they finish high school media studies. In this, educators sell short students – and fall short of their larger responsibility to our broken world – neglecting the development of future journalists in a critical area of their calling. The might of the pen – or more precisely the keyboard in today’s electronically wired world – rests on two planks.   • Science Do Australian and New Zealand Newspapers Publish?
    Australian Journalism Review 25 (1) July 2003: 129-143 How much ‘real’ science do Australian and New Zealand newspapers publish? By Steve McIlwaine ABSTRACT Ten metropolitan or national newspapers – nine Australian and one New Zealand – were analysed over either seven or six years for their content of science stories according to strict criteria aimed at filtering out “non-core” science, such as computer technology, as well as what was considered non-science and pseudo- science. The study sought to establish the proportions of “real” science to total editorial content in these newspapers. Results were compared with similar content in US, UK, European and South-East Asian dailies. Introduction Although quite rigorous surveys by science-based organisations in Britain, the United States and Australia (Saulwick poll 1989, AGB McNair poll 1997) have shown uniformly that news consumers want to see or hear much more about science in news media, significantly above their appetite for sport and politics, news media appear not to have responded. Despite a substantial increase from a very low base in what is described as science news in the past 30 years (Arkin 1990, DITAC 1991, p.35-43, Harris, 1993, McCleneghan, 1994) and especially in the 1990s (Metcalfe and Gascoigne 1995), the increase seems not to have kept pace with apparent demand. The “blame” for such responses – or non-responses – to audience data have been studied previously (Riffe and Belbase 1983, Culbertson and Stempel 1984, Thurlow and Milo 1993, Beam 1995) in relation to such areas as overseas and medical news and appear to indicate in part an inertia, conservatism or hostility among senior news executives.

    Women’s Struggle for Top Jobs in the News Media Louise North School of Applied Media and Social Sciences Monash University, Northways Rd, Churchill, VIC 3842 [email protected] Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of the rise of women and women leaders in the Australian news media and outlines aspects of newsroom culture that continue to hamper women’s career progression. The chapter draws on a recent global survey and literature on the status of women in the news media. The most recent and wide ranging global data shows that while women’s position in the news media workforce (including reporting roles) has changed little in fifteen years, women have made small inroads into key editorial leadership positions. Nevertheless, the relative absence of women in these senior roles remains glaring, particularly in the print media, and points to a hegemonically masculine newsroom culture that works to undermine women’s progress in the industry. Keywords: gender and journalism, female journalists, print media, workforce Women have long been thwarted from key editorial leadership roles in news organisations around the world, and this continues today. Indeed, feminist scholars and some journalists suggest that the most common obstacle to career progress (and therefore attaining leadership positions) reported by women journalists is the problem of male attitudes.1 Even in Nordic countries where gender empowerment is rated high, patriarchal conservatism is noted as a central impediment to women’s career advancement in journalism.2 In the news media those in editorial leadership positions decide on editorial direction and content, and staffing – among other things – and therefore determine the newsroom makeup and what the consumer understands as news.

Fairfax did not announce it quite as bluntly as that, instead describing its action within the context of a “business improvement plan”. It sent an email to all its employees, announcing “a major restructure of corporate and group services and significant initiatives to improve the overall productivity and performance of many of our businesses”. John Lyons, a former Fairfax editor, and Caroline Overington reported (Australian, 27 August 2008, pp.1-2): “Fairfax Media is abandoning quality journalism at its flagship newspapers, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age, according to staff who yesterday rejected a company plan to shed 550 jobs. Chief executive David Kirk and his deputy Brian McCarthy told the Australian Stock Exchange and newspaper staff via email yesterday that Fairfax hoped to save $50 million by cutting the jobs in Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand – 5 per cent of its full- time workforce.” The company‟s metropolitan newspapers recorded a 9 per cent drop in profit in 2007-08.

The company’s total revenue of $US8.63 billion for the financial year 2015 reflected growth in the Book Publishing and Digital Real Estate Services segments. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation increased 11 per cent to $US852m. On a full-year basis, News Corporation made a net loss of $US149m, compared to net income of $US237 million in the previous year.

The number ofstudents graduating from Australia's vocation-based journalism courses is rIsing steadily Last year it was estImated that about 835 students would have graduated from Australia's vocation-based journalismschools into an industry where there were probably about 300 joumalism­ related mediajobs available (Patching, 1995). The largest number of graduates came from Charles Sturt University (CSU) and Deakin University (90 each). The lowest numbers, gIven their enrolments, came from Bond (8) and Umversity of Wollongong (15).
