An Excerpt from Chapter 13 Winning Is Not Enough by Sir Jackie Stewart
An excerpt from Chapter 13 Winning Is Not Enough by Sir Jackie Stewart “Look,” said Mark, aged six. “There’s Daddy’s autograph.” We didn’t know what he was taking about, but we turned to see our young son was pointing at the instantly recognizable blue oval-shaped emblem of the Ford Motor Company. He had so often seen me wearing racing overalls with the Ford insignia, or appearing at Ford events, or featuring in Ford advertisements that he had grown to assume their logo also represented me. In fact, I was first contracted to the company in 1964 and I would remain so until 2004. First as a racing driver, then a public affairs representative, a sales and marketing spokesman, a vehicle dynamic assessor, a concept design consultant and lastly a strategic adviser in training engineers, my forty years with Ford represented the most significant commercial association of my life. It began in October 1964 when I turned up at the British Motor Show at Earls Court, London, as a young racing driver hoping to make some contacts in the motor industry. These were early days, and I had decided to drive south from Scotland through the night because I didn’t think I could afford to stay in a London hotel. Even so, I had three names written on a scrap of paper—Dick Jefferies from Dunlop, Geoff Murdoch from Esso and Walter Hayes from Ford—and I hoped that if I could meet any of them, they might be able to help develop my career and hopefully improve my financial situation. -
DBR 9 – the Definitive History
www.porscheroadandrace.com DBR 9 – The Definitive History Published: 6th January 2021 By: Glen Smale Online version: https://www.porscheroadandrace.com/dbr-9-the-definitive-history/ DBR 9 – The Definitive History by Christoph Mäder and Thomas Gruber © T.A.G. Motor Books GmbH At Porsche Road & Race, we receive many books for review, and these include books on all manner of high performance roadgoing sports cars and motorsport. So, when the Aston Martin book, DBR 9 – The Definitive History arrived on my desk, it created some fanfare because not only was it a large parcel, but it was also a very heavy one. Intrigued, I set about opening it, and to be quite honest, it was unlike any other book I had previously had the privilege of reviewing. In a nutshell, this book created a watershed in my opinion, www.porscheroadandrace.com showing just how a definitive book on any automotive subject should be undertaken. Darren Turner, Aston Martin factory driver at the 2014 WEC Silverstone 6 Hour So impressive was this piece of work, that I decided at the time that it could not be reviewed in the normal sense of the word. And so I tracked down Darren Turner, the longest standing Aston Martin works driver, and one who was deeply involved in the development of the DBR 9 from the outset, and I conducted an interview with him at Le Mans in 2016. But wasn’t it a bit of an overkill to do an interview with a racing driver just for a book review, you might ask? No not really, and if you get your hands on a copy of the book, you will understand why! The quotes below are excerpts from my interview with Turner in the Aston Martin hospitality suite at Le Mans, and do not form part of the book itself. -
Rally Panel Report 13/4/15
Rally Panel Report 13/4/15 Prepared for: State Council Prepared by: Matt Martin, Rally Panel Chairman. 2015 Registrations 2015 Registrations as at 13/4. 2015 2014 2013 NSWRC 71 70 34 DRS 36 68 11 DRS4 26 (new series for 2015) ERS 3 11 2 RSS 68 58 6 PRS 27 (new series for 2015) Total 231 207 53 The Rallysrpint series continues to grow, with both new competitors and new events joining the series. After consulting registered competitors, the Panel has added a 7th round on 27/6/15 at WSID in Sydney. The discipline of Rallysprinting is considered strategically important by the Rally Panel, as it is our number one gateway event for new competitors. The State championship is back. The panel has devoted much energy and resources into this area, and the 2015 championship is showing great signs. Bega has returned for 2015, as well as a new event in Glen Innes, which saw 51 entries on 28/3/15. The panel is aware of another landmark state championship event which will most likely return for 2016, and are very excited by that. We look forward to releasing the 2016 calendar later in the year. The DRS in 2015 has been split into 2, which allows for 4WD turbo cars. Whilst numbers in the DRS4 component are up, the participation in the 2WD sections is lower than last year at this stage. Number in Hyundai series are also down, but we are aware of at least 3 crews who are planning on contesting the later rounds. -

Porsche 919 Hybrid English.Indd
Porsche 919 Hybrid Return to top-level sport Porsche is making its comeback to the top-level motorsport arena: with the new 919 Hybrid the sports car brand is sending a platform for pioneering technology to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the undisputed seasonal highlight of the 24-hour Le Mans race. Porsche's reputation precedes it at this venue: with 16 overall victories under its belt, the brand holds the record for this, the most famous endurance race in the world. In 2014 Porsche is returning to the top-level class endurance race after a 16-year absence - namely Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG explains: "The new and revolutionary efficiency regulations for this class were what prompted us to take this step. In 2014 it is not going to be the fastest contender who is going to win the sports car world championship and Le Mans, but the car that gets furthest with the defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that the automotive industry has to face. The 919 Hybrid is like a high speed research laboratory and the most complex racing car Porsche has ever built." The new WEC regulations for the LMP1 racing car gives engineers an unusual amount of leeway and demands pioneering technology, such as hybridisation, downsizing engines and consistent lightweight construction. This is all particularly relevant for the development of future generations of factory-spec sports cars. Maximum sporting performance and highest efficiency are at the heart of "Porsche Intelligent Performance". -
