Briefing Note What is ‘People Keeping Well’? ‘People Keeping Well in their Community’ is community-based prevention activity that can help to prevent and delay people needing to access health and social care services. It is one of Sheffield’s approaches to Social Prescribing. It’s about resolving social issues and connecting people to ‘things that matter to them’ locally which will reduce the risk and/or decline of poor health and wellbeing, so that people: • are more connected – they have made friends and have a peer network for support • are more resilient – they have coping mechanisms to deal with ‘life issues/crisis’ better • know where to go to get timely help – for example to manage long term conditions People Keeping Well The PKW Team 1. This month, we launched a community survey via SYP Alerts, to better understand what you think our priorities should be in the south west of the city. We advertised the survey on Facebook and Twitter and had a really positive response. The information we gathered will mean we can concentrate our patrols in the areas and on issues that matter to you… Issues you want to see as a priority by area: Beauchief & Greenhill – 48% highlighted speeding as a priority, 33% vehicle crime Dore & Totley – 66% highlighted burglary as a priority, 36% speeding Ecclesall – 64% highlighted burglary as a priority, 46% speeding Gleadless Valley – 53% highlighted drug dealing/using as a priority, 40% burglary, 40% off-road motorbikes Graves Park – 45% highlighted burglary as a priority, 41% speeding Nether Edge & Sharrow – 64% highlighted drug dealing/taking as a priority, 52% gun and knife crime Thank you to everyone that took part in the survey. Woodland & Trees Headlines • Using our standard methods, 14.8% or 5,454ha of Sheffield is classed as woodland. Data gathered during the recent iTree project suggest even greater coverage of 5,946ha or 16.2%, substantially higher than the national figure of 10%. Total tree cover for the Sheffield district, calculated by iTree, is 18.4%. • 23.5% of Sheffield’s lowland woodland is categorised as ancient semi-natural woodland (ASNW) or plantations on ancient woodland sites (PAWS). This covers 3.5% of the Sheffield district and is higher than the figure of 2.3% for the UK. • Sheffield’s woodlands are a valuable recreational resource. Ninety-four percent of people have access to a large woodland (20ha) within 4km of their residence and nearly half of Sheffield’s population has access to a 2ha woodland within 500m. • Over half of Sheffield’s woodlands are covered by designations such as Local Wildlife Sites (LWSs) and 63% of land with LWS designation is woodland. Most sites are improving; over 70% of woodland habitat within LWSs is in positive conservation management. Over 92% of ancient woodland is covered by a site designation. • Compared to UK trends, bird species considered in the UK Biodiversity Indicator ‘C5b: woodland birds’ are doing well, particularly woodland generalists, indicating the good health of Sheffield’s woodlands. • Threats to woodlands in Sheffield include habitat fragmentation, damage from recreation and spread of invasive species from gardens. Continued improvements in woodland management, including the input of local groups, can help tackle this. Parish Profile Holy Cross, Gleadless Valley Parish Church Holy Cross is a conservative evangelical Church of England Parish Church for people of all ages and stages of life and from all backgrounds and nations. It is located in the Gleadless Valley on the south side of Sheffield. Our Parish and Community The Gleadless Valley consists of four main estates - Newfield Green, Rollestone, Herdings and Hemsworth. They were built in the 1950s and 1960s. Together they have a population of over 10,000 people. In their early years, these estates were heralded as a European landmark for new housing because of the blend of tower blocks, flats and terraced houses built around the natural open spaces of the valley's existing woodlands. Sadly, in recent years, they have become one of Sheffield’s least desirable communities to live in. The majority of parishioners are of white ethnicity (96%), but there are a growing number of people from multicultural backgrounds (immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers) – this is increasingly reflected in our church family. The rate of employment in the parish is very low (5.15%) which puts it in the bottom ten percent in Sheffield. Gleadless Valley is an area of significant social deprivation – 65% of inhabitants are in the top 5 percentile for social deprivation. The parish is the sixth most deprived in Sheffield Diocese and many in our Church Family and community face financial, health and social difficulties.
