Sheffield South West Neighbourhood Newsletter

13th August 2020

You said, we did

Policing works best when we listen to you and when we act directly, based on your concerns.

This month, we launched a community survey via SYP Alerts, to better understand what you think our priorities should be in the south west of the city.

We advertised the survey on Facebook and Twitter and had a really positive response. The information we gathered will mean we can concentrate our patrols in the areas and on issues that matter to you…

Issues you want to see as a priority by area:

Beauchief & Greenhill – 48% highlighted speeding as a priority, 33% vehicle crime

Dore & – 66% highlighted burglary as a priority, 36% speeding

Ecclesall – 64% highlighted burglary as a priority, 46% speeding

Gleadless Valley – 53% highlighted drug dealing/using as a priority, 40% burglary, 40% off-road motorbikes

Graves Park – 45% highlighted burglary as a priority, 41% speeding

Nether Edge & – 64% highlighted drug dealing/taking as a priority, 52% gun and knife crime

Thank you to everyone that took part in the survey.

With this information we will do our best to target these particular issues and feedback the results to you.

Please follow us on Facebook, Twiter and sign up to SYP Alerts to ensure that you receive all the updates!

What have we been up to?

This month, our teams worked under Operation Fortify, our multi-agency approach to tackle organised crime groups across the city. We had particular success, conducting warrants in Greenhill, , two in Valley and three in Abbeydale.

We had some fantastic results as you can see below and made sure we went out into the community following the warrants being conducted to let you know what we’d been up to.

9 Arrests for drug supply offences 546 Cannabis plants seized and destroyed Class A drugs and cash seized

You asked us to step up patrols of public transport in the area to ensure COVID19 face covering compliance. As you can see, PCSO South and other officers have been patrolling and found excellent compliance with the rule – thank you.

We have been conducting patrols around shops on the south west and speaking with staff to offer support and reassurance.

We’ve increased our patrols in the and Abbeydale areas after recently publicised shootings. There have been some great results, including arrests for posession with intent to supply class A and B drugs, firearms offences, posession of a stun gun and burglary. We’ve also seized criminals cash, as you can see below with police dog Spud (the cash was much harder to find than it appears!).

Here are some of the proactive figures to date:

 17 Arrests  159 Stop & Searches  366 Vehicles stopped  10 Vehicles seized  4 Weapons seized  32 Incidents attended  2 Warrants

Crime and antisocial behaviour update

After recent concerns, we’ve been maintaining our presence in Endcliffe Park, continuing to ensure that it can be used and enjoyed by the public of .

You may be aware of some disturbing footage that was circulating from two different incidents in the park on the 24th of July – we are aware of this footage and can confirm that there were two arrests that evening, one for possession of an offensive weapon and the other for robbery.

Investigations continue into both offences.

Our mounted officers have been in the park on a number of days, alongside high visibility patrols by our police officers and PCSO’s.

During this we seized over 600 laughing gas cannisters, a quantity of drugs from a male after a stop and search, along with helping a young girl in distress who had consumed too much alcohol.

We’ve also been working with our colleagues from the Neighbourhood Team on Operation Sidewinder. This is a high visibility, proactive operation which aims to tackle drug supply and use in the night time economy.

You might have seen our officers patrolling around the park and along Road; we’ve had some great feedback from local who were reassured by our presence at what continues to be an uncertain time for them.

We have unfortunately had to close the gates to the car park in Endcliffe Park on a few occasions and we are aware of the disruption that this causes. However, we are only taking this action in conjunction with the parks staff when it is absolutely necessary.

We will continue to publicise this via Twitter and Facebook if or when we need to do it again.

Thank you to everyone who has stopped to say hello, it means a lot to our team!

What your neighbourhood team have been doing

Following the community of passing us information regarding this car being used in an anti-social manner and being linked to drug dealing, it was removed. Keep passing us similar information!

Here’s a second car recovered from Gleadless Valley, this one was found to be stolen!

We continued to support Captain Tobias in his goal of completing a second marathon. We’re extremely proud of him and have been cheering him on all the way. Sergeant Wilson managed to bag a pair of signed football boots from Sheffield United’s very own Chris Basham, despite him being a fan of the Owls. Thanks Chris, good luck in the new season!

Off Road Motorbikes:

PCSO Siobhan Drury has been conducting extra patrols in the area of Norton Lane, Matthews Lane, Hemsworth Road and Summerhouse Drive after an increase in complaints regarding off-road motorbikes.

We are aware that the offenders may be travelling from Gleadless to Jordanthorpe via these routes.

She met with councillors Ian and Sue Auckland to discuss the issue and spoke with the local community.

Please continue to report these issues to us, especially if you have any CCTV of the offenders that can help us to identify them.

All the evidence helps – we’ll keep you updated on the results. Keep an eye out for the SYP off-road bike team in the area.

The team have continued to target illegal parking across the area, supporting ’s parking enforcement officers in key locations. Here are examples on and Vincent Road.

Finally, we’ve been continuing our work around Southcroft Gardens, Nether Edge and the surrounding roads.

For those who aren’t aware of the issues here, we conducted a misuse of drugs act warrant on Frederick Street, which resulted in a male being arrested for possession of class A drugs. From the intelligence we received after this we became aware of issues around anti-social behaviour, drug use, litter and damage being caused. This led to us obtaining a closure order on the address subject to the original warrant and the creation of a problem oriented policing plan to tackle the wider issues through a multi-agency approach.

This leads me to this Friday, the 14th of August. We’re meeting with the local community to pick litter, investigate any further damage/drug use and to hear the concerns of residents. We’ll be on Southcroft Gardens from 10.30am, please come and say hi!

Offenders brought to justice

Ricky Wilson, 35 years and Trevor Wood, 43 years, were both charged with burglary at an address in the Nether Edge area. Great work from the response team here at Woodseats, the South West neighbourhood team and CID!

Crime prevention advice

Make yourself heard – using the 999 Silent Solution

If you’re suffering domestic abuse, if you're in danger and you need police help, please make use of the ‘silent solution’. If you need immediate and emergency help, please call 999. The operator will ask you some questions – and this is the important bit. Please DO NOT simply press ‘55’ and hang up. This may not have the desired effect and your call may not be seen for what it is – a genuine emergency call.

The operator may ask you to cough, or press your keypad if you’re able. This lets them know that you’re listening, that you’re there but it isn’t safe for you to speak. The operator will then ask you to press ’55’. This lets them know that it’s an emergency call and they will make an assessment based on what they can hear in the background, to determine the level of response.

If you are in danger and need our help, the ‘silent solution’ is there to ensure you get an emergency response. If you aren’t in need of urgent help but you still want to report domestic abuse, you can do so by calling 101 or, if you are still worried you will be overheard, by visiting our dedicated domestic abuse reporting portal here - https://www.reportingcrime.uk/SYPDA/

There are lots of agencies, charities and support organisations available in South and nationally, to help you if you need it. Please know you are not alone.
