SAVORING THE CLASSICAL TRADITION IN DRAMA ENGAGING PRESENTATIONS BY THE SHAKESPEARE GUILD I N P R O U D COLLABORATION WIT H THE NATIONAL ARTS CLUB THE PLAYERS, NEW YORK CITY THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION SALUTING A UNIQUE INSTITUTION ♦ Monday, November 26 Founded in 1917 by the Drama League, the Drama Book Shop became an independent store in 1923. Since 2001 it has been located on West 40th Street, where it provides a variety of services to the actors, directors, producers, and other theatre professionals who work both on and off Broadway. Many of its employees THE PLAYERS are young performers, and a number of them take part in 16 Gramercy Park South events at the Shop’s lovely black-box auditorium. In 2011 Manhattan the store was recognized by a Tony Award for Excellence RECEPTION 6:30, PANEL 7:00 in the Theatre . Not surprisingly, its beneficiaries (among them Admission Free playwrights Eric Bogosian, Moises Kaufman, Lin-Manuel Reservations Requested Miranda, Lynn Nottage, and Theresa Rebeck), have responded with alarm to reports that high rents may force the Shop to relocate or close. Sharing that concern, we joined The Players and such notables as actors Jim Dale, Jeffrey Hardy, and Peter Maloney, and writer Adam Gopnik to rally support for a cultural treasure. The Crucible, Walter Kerr Theatre, New York — review Max McGuinness I approached this production of The Crucible with some trepidation. Ivo van Hove, perhaps the most lauded theatre practitioner working today, directs the incomparable Saoirse Ronan in her stage debut alongside such seasoned luminaries as Ben Whishaw, Sophie Okonedo, Ciarán Hinds and Jim Norton. Philip Glass has written the music. This risks being a theatrical Agincourt, I thought. All that heavy cavalry will surely end up crashing into each other and getting bogged down in Arthur Miller’s dense and passionate play about the 1692-93 Salem witch trials. But van Hove has once again pulled off an inspired reimagining of a theatrical classic, which takes a little time to find its rhythm during the first scene, but then canters briskly along throughout the final two hours. That steady pacing reflects van Hove’s decision to treat the work like a diabolical police procedural. Accusations, interrogations and paperwork are what drive his Crucible towards its grim conclusion. As Deputy Governor Danforth, Hinds dominates the second half, delivering a flawless study of prosecutorial zeal in the service of fanaticism. Surreal flourishes, such as Tal Yarden’s bird-themed video sequences and a marauding wolf-like Tamaskan dog, keep witchery itself firmly in mind. Whishaw and Okonedo play the doomed John and Elizabeth Proctor with the right mixture of exasperation and defiance. As their nemesis Abigail Williams, Ronan adds a demonic edge to her usual effortless magnetism and is an entirely plausible conduit for mass hysteria. More impressive still is Tavi Gevinson’s interpretation of the wavering servant Mary Warren. -

Times Square is known for its commercial properties, theatre district, advertisement and entertainment. It has been one of New York’s most iconic tourist destinations. People around the world visit Times Square just to capture a glimpse of New York City’s magic especially the theatres on Broadway. Broadway theatres are widely considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the country. However, these theatres haven’t always been this picturesque. In this paper we will focus on how the Theatre District in Time Square has changed. We will be focusing on Four Theatres, which include New Amsterdam Theatre, Lyceum Theatre, Shubert Theatre and Booth Theatre. These sites have gone through a series of physiological and psychological transformations throughout the years. Some are still standing as operating theaters, while others have converted and repurposed. From the construction of theatres then the stock market crash to prostitution and crime. Times Square’s theatre district has had its fair share of hiccups along the way before contributing to the image of New York City as we see it today. Our group members chose to do theatres in Time Square because each of us have a common interest in theatres and would like to gain more knowledge on the history of each theatre. -
