11 Unesco Sites Tour 11 UNESCO SITES TOUR Visit 11 UNESCO SITES TOUR web page Visit 4 countries with 11 UNESCO sites in just 13 days! Explore the Škocjan Caves in Slovenia, hike around the OVERVIEW Plitvice Lakes, walk across the Mostar bridge, Dubrovnik city walls and explore Kotor Bay. DAY Ljubljana arrival Arrival at Ljubljana airport, where you'll be met by the local guide/driver who will take you to the hotel. Free 1 time for relaxation and, in the afternoon, sightseeing tour of the old town. Overnight in Ljubljana. DAY Ljubljana – Lakes Bled & Bohinj – Ljubljana In the morning we start the private tour in Slovenia with a drive to Bled to admire the beautiful Alpine lake with its charming island and castle 130 metres above the lake. We then drive deeper into the Julian Alps to 2 explore another Alpine pearl – Bohinj, with a cable car ride to Mt. Vogel. In the evening transfer to Ljubljana. DAY Ljubljana – Idrija – Ljubljana After breakfast, we drive towards Idrija to visit the UNESCO protected mercury mine which used to be one of the largest in the world. Visit of the mine and short walk through the town centre. In the afternoon we drive 3 back to Ljubljana. Overnight in Ljubljana. DAY Ljubljana – Škocjan Caves – Poreč – Rovinj Our drive takes us to another UNESCO site in Slovenia – the Škocjan Caves. Later we head towards Croatia and its northern coastal region, Istria. Our next visit is Poreč and the Euphrasian Basilica from the 6th century 4 – another UNESCO site. In the afternoon drive to and overnight in Rovinj. DAY Rovinj – Pula – Zagreb After breakfast, we continue with the tour of Istria. We visit Pula and its Roman amphitheatre which could seat around 20,000 people. After exploring Pula, we head towards the Croatian capital Zagreb. Overnight in 5 Zagreb. DAY Zagreb – Plitvice Lakes We start the day with a morning sightseeing tour of the old Croatian capital – the church of St. Mark's, Cathedral, Parliament, Ban Jelačić Square etc. Next, we drive to the Plitivce Lakes that are also protected 6 under UNESCO. 16 large and small lakes and 92 waterfalls make up one of the most magnificent sites in the world. Overnight in Plitvice. DAY Plitvice – Zadar – Šibenik – Split We leave after breakfast and drive towards Dalmatia. Our first stop is Zadar. Listen to the Sea "organs", view the "salutation of the Sun" and admire its medieval churches of St. Donatus and St. Anastasia. Visit the old 7 Roman Forum. Our drive then takes us to Šibenik with its UNESCO protected cathedral of St. James and medieval town surrounding it. In the evening we continue to Split for our overnight stay. Admire the famous cathedral of St. Lawrence and city walls. In the evening return 8 to Split for a guided tour of the old town, Diocletian's Palace, cathedral of St. Duje and Riva. Overnight in Split. DAY Split – Island Hvar We start the day taking a ferry to the island of Hvar which is one of the most famous along the Dalmatian coast. Upon arrival at Hvar we visit Stari Grad, protected by UNESCO. In the afternoon we head for Hvar 9 town to visit one of the best protected towns on the Dalmatian islands. Overnight in Hvar. DAY Hvar – Mostar – Dubrovnik After breakfast we drive towards Bosnia & Herzegovina to visit Mostar and the iconic bridge over the Neretva, protected by UNESCO. In the morning, a short stop at Počitelj, a beautiful "Turkish-style" village 10 also under the UNESCO protection, and continue our drive along the Neretva river to admire millions of mandarin trees before reaching Dubrovnik late in the evening. Overnight in Dubrovnik. DAY Dubrovnik Full day to admire the pearl of the Adriatic, UNESCO protected Dubrovnik: the Rector's Palace, Cathedral, Franciscan monastery, Old Port, etc. In the afternoon free time and optional trip to nearby Lokrum island. 11 Overnight in Dubrovnik. DAY Dubrovnik – Kotor – Dubrovnik We complete our jouney in Montenegro. Explore the largest fjord of the Adriatic, Boka Kotorska, the UNESCO protected town of Kotor and coastal city of Budva. In the evening return and overnight in 12 Dubrovnik. DAY Dubrovnik departure 13 Departure from Dubrovnik airport.     Pharos: the Greek city on a Croatian Island Dr Christopher Gribbin Pharos: the Greek city on a Croatian Island Page 1 Greek city on a Croatian Island - The Greeks have a long tradition of travelling to new lands in pursuit of trade or a better life. In antiquity, Greek settlers founded a network of cities all around the Mediterranean and Black Seas. By the fourth century BC, these colonies stretched from Spain to Syria and from Libya to the Ukraine. As they relied on the sea for connections with other Greeks, these colonies mostly stuck close to the shore – “like ants or frogs around a pond”, as Plato once quipped. Some of these colonies went on to become world-famous cities, such as Marseilles, Naples and Syracuse. Others are less famous today, but their stories are no less fascinating. ASA’s Adriatic Journey visits several former Greek colonies on the Croatian coast. One of these colonies has a particularly interesting history. The town of Stari Grad sits on the beautiful island of Hvar. Today Stari Grad is a quiet seaside settlement of 2000 people. Many of its cobblestone streets and stone buildings date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. But its origins go back to 385 or 384 BC, when a group of Greeks from the island of Paros founded a colony there, which they cheekily called Pharos in memory of their homeland.
