Introduction Hong Kong Cantonese, a variety of the Chinese southern dialect group Yue, enjoys a formal status which is not common for a Chinese vernacular: together with Putonghua and English, it is official language of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The city of Hong Kong, located on the south-east coast of China and bordering with the Guangdong province in the north, also has a particular status and history which differentiate it from the rest of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Hong Kong, in fact, has been part of Great Britain for one and a half century, ceded to the British Crown by the Heavenly Empire after the First Opium War in 1842 and returned to socialist China in 1997. Over 150 years of separation from the mainland have deeply influenced Hong Kong which, for this reason, has been made a Special Administrative Region of the PRC and therefore enjoys a higher degree of autonomy from Beijing, in the context of the policy called ‘One country, two systems’ (Carroll 2007). One of the main differences between Hong Kong and the rest of the PRC lies in the language situation: as politically absent from China, Hong Kong has not been invested by the vast promotion of Putonghua, official language of the PRC, which has been carried out in the second half of the last century, and has thus retained strong vernacular features (Bauer 1984). Cantonese, in fact, is the mother tongue of the vast majority of the inhabitants of Hong Kong and an important symbol of its identity. Hong Kong, on the other hand, is a new frontier for Putonghua, which has officially entered it at the moment

This paper reviews the status of Cantonese in Hong Kong under this policy with respect to the levels of government, education and curriculum, considers the consequences of neglecting Cantonese in the school curriculum, and discusses the importance of large-scale surveys for language policymaking. Keywords: the status of Cantonese, “bi-literacy and tri-lingualism” policy, language survey, Cantonese language education Background The adjustment of the language policy is a common phenomenon in post-colonial societies. It always results in raising the status of the regional vernacular, but the lan- guage of the ex-colonist still maintains a very strong influence on certain domains. Taking Singapore as an example, English became the dominant language in the work- place and families, and the local dialects were suppressed. It led to the degrading of both English and Chinese proficiency levels according to scholars’ evaluation (Goh 2009a, b).

Opposed to previous studies, the rhyme categories are not considered. I analyze the literary stratum of eighteen Yue dialects and reconstruct the vowel system based on the comparative method.

These issues manifested in Hong Kong films of the time in the form of film characters’ language ideologies. An analysis of six films reveals three themes: (1) the assumption of mutual intelligibility between Cantonese and Putonghua, (2) the importance of English towards one’s Hong Kong identity, and (3) the expectation that Mainland immigrants use Cantonese as their primary language of communication in Hong Kong. The recurrence of these findings indicates their prevalence amongst native Hongkongers, even in a post-handover context. 1 Introduction The handover of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1997 marked the end of 155 years of British colonial rule. Within this socio-political landscape came questions of identification and intergroup relations, both amongst native Hongkongers and Mainland Chinese (Tong et al. 1999, Brewer 1999). These manifest in the attitudes and ideologies that native Hongkongers have towards the three most widely used languages in Hong Kong: Cantonese, English, and Putonghua (a standard variety of Mandarin promoted in Mainland China by the Government).

    Language Specific Peculiarities Document for Cantonese as Spoken in the Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces of China 1. Dialects The name "Cantonese" is used either for all of the language varieties spoken in specific regions in the Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces of China and Hong Kong (i.e., the Yue dialects of Chinese), or as one particular variety referred to as the "Guangfu group" (Bauer & Benedict 1997). In instances where Cantonese is described as 'Cantonese "proper"' (i.e. used in the narrower sense), it refers to a variety of Cantonese that is spoken in the capital cities Guangzhou and Nanning, as well as in Hong Kong and Macau. This database includes Cantonese as spoken in the Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces of China only (i.e. not in Hong Kong); five dialect groups have been defined for Cantonese (see the following table)1. Three general principles have been used in defining these dialect groupings: (i) phonological variation, (ii) geographical variation, and (iii) lexical variation. With relation to phonological variation, although Cantonese is spoken in all of the regions listed in the table, there are differences in pronunciation. Differences in geographic locations also correlate with variations in lexical choice. Cultural differences are also correlated with linguistic differences, particularly in lexical choices.
