But what about those who have not learnt the language? Do they code-switch? Do they code-switch differently to language learners? How are they able to code-switch successfully and why would they want to at all? This thesis examined the Japanese-English code-switching in fanfiction based in the Japanese fandom Kuroshitsuji (“Black Butler”) of those who had learnt Japanese at an educational institute (Learners) and those who had not (Non-Learners) as well those who had only learnt Japanese outside of educational institutes (Active Non-Learners) and those who had not learnt it at all (Passive Non-Learners). Using corpus linguistic techniques, the concordance tool AntConc and a log-likelihood calculator, it was found that Learners and Non-Learners code-switched in a very similar way, not only in frequency but also code-switch distribution. However, Active Non-Learners and Passive Non-Learners code-switched very differently. Canon Type (e.g. the anime with fan- translated subtitles vs the anime with official English subtitles) was also examined and it was found that canon type may have had an influence on the code-switching of Non- Learners. To examine why these code-switch patterns occurred, questionnaires were sent to the authors to ask about their code-switch attitudes. Although it was difficult to make connections between the author attitudes and the code-switch frequency patterns it was found that community of practice played an important role in code-switch decisions whether it be in a positive or negative way. This thesis was created in the hope that it would help to broaden code-switching research by using different Learner types and written over spoken material. Using the plethora of negative attitudes found in the author questionnaire responses it was shown that it is important to combat these attitudes and it is hoped that further research would continue to fight against these especially in the field of second language acquisition. Lee, Chair This dissertation expands existing accounts of the history of Asian racialization in the United States by examining the various discursive, symbolic, and affective economies through which the “Asian girl” has been trafficked. I mobilize the “Asian girl” as a critical framework for attending to an especially vulnerable, young female population and girlification as a particular mode of racialization. I examine the Asian girl queered by militarization, the kawaii (cute) Asian girl, the cybernetic/transgenic Asian girl, and the feral Asian girl as critical sites for seriously grappling with material conditions of political constraint and dependency. The project identifies girlish vulnerability as a structure of disavowal/contempt in a historically masculinist minoritarian politics that emphasizes autonomy, sovereignty, and militant resistance and takes forms of vulnerability as a basis theorizing an alternative affective politics. My research draws on the works of Asian/American novelists, poets, and visual artists for how they (re)imagine Asian girls in lateral associations of compoundedness, eroticism, and nascent political solidarity.

Published by the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies University of Kansas Lawrence, Kansas In a cramped Quito apartment in the late 1990s, the first draft of this dictionary, in Kichwa and Spanish, was written by my brother, Nematni Baltazar Masaquiza Chango. In the fall of 2004, with my beginning Kichwa students at Kansas University, and then with my Kichwa II students in the spring of 2005, we added many words and the English meanings to make it a tri-lingual Kichwa-Spanish-English dictionary. Kichwa is the most widely spoken indigenous language of the Americas. It is spoken today in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. There are dialectical differences between regions. Within Ecuador, where I grew up, one finds minor letter changes between regions. In one dialect people might say kanda instead of kanta; jaka instead of q’aqa; ufiana or upina instead of uvyana; maskana, instead of mashkana. Kichwa speakers and students will notice that I have not strictly followed the pronunciation and spelling conventions of Ecuadorian Unified Kichwa, but rather have applied vocabulary and conventions from Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Why did I do this? In part, I have taken advantage of a language that is not yet standardized—Ecuadorian Kichwa isn’t—to experiment in using other indigenous’ peoples’ letters. For example, Mayans and Aztec intellectuals have been reclaiming their own languages and using their original codices as guides.

Game Rating Systems have their fair share of critics among those debating the details of localized content and prove to be in a peculiar position between developers and the end-user. The current state of the industry shows that alterations are made to regional versions of a game, especially with regards to sensitive topics such as violence, nudity, and sexualization. A survey to gauge end-users’ perception on these topics has been spread amongst residents of Japan and Western regions. Japanese respondents show to be more accepting of legislation surrounding video games whereas Western respondents tend to display a severe dislike for any sort of legislation, and often see not only censorship, but also localization in a negative context. Censorship, self-censorship, and localization are complicated and nuanced topics that turn out to be complexly intertwined with the practice of game production.
