> Columbia Business School - 2017 Summer Research Internship

Columbia Business School (CBS) is seeking outstanding applicants for the 2017 Summer Research Internship program. The highly selective program provides an intellectually stimulating environment and exposes the students to the world of business research. Several of the top interns have gone on to leading MS and PhD programs in Economics, Finance, Computer Science and Data Sciences. Many have been selected to join CBS afterwards as full-time Research Associates.

Under the guidance of Columbia Business School’s leading faculty, interns will take an active role on a research project in one of the following areas: Finance, Economics, Marketing, Management, Decision Sciences, Operations, Accounting, and Data Analytics.

This is a multi-disciplinary program and candidates from all backgrounds, including Business, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, the Physical Sciences, and the Social and Behavioral Sciences, are encouraged to apply.

Prospective interns must have the following qualifications:

 Enthusiasm for research and intellectual curiosity

 Excellent communication skills

The internship program is designed for undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior year and first-year Masters students. Exceptional students from other classes are considered on a case-by-case basis.

The program runs from May 30, 2017 – August 4, 2017 (tentative dates). On-campus housing and a stipend will be provided.

> Volunteer Research Assistant Position in Psychiatry and Psychoneuroimmunology

Are you a conscientious individual who can dedicate at least two days per week (Monday to Friday) in 2017? If you answered yes to all of these questions, we might have the ideal opportunity for you.

Dr. Aoife O’Donovan at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC) is seeking applicants for a volunteer research assistant position in the THRIVE Lab. The goal of THRIVE Lab is to Internships and Volunteering Opportunities: January 9, 2017 uncover how traumatic psychological stress increases risk for physical and mental health problems.

The successful applicant will be working closely with psychologists, medical doctors, graduate students, medical students and other trainees in a dynamic and friendly environment. They will assist with running participants on a variety of projects investigating the effects of traumatic psychological stress on mental and physical health. Our current project is a mobile health application to deliver cognitive training to patients with PTSD. Our new project will be focused on uncovering how inflammation might affect the brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The research assistant’s scope of responsibilities may include helping with study development, managing computerized psychological tasks, literature review, data management and analysis, and manuscript preparation.

Past research experience is not required, but applicants must have a strong willingness to learn research methods and a passion for science and health. This is an ideal position for someone interested in pursuing medical school or graduate school, and opportunities for publication may be available for highly motivated and capable individuals. We are looking for students with a high GPA, who can make at least a one- year commitment, and who can dedicate at least two full weekdays per week on location at the SFVAMC. Applicants must be willing and able to travel to the SFVAMC. A free shuttle service is available from Powell BART to the SFVAMC. Individuals majoring in psychology, neuroscience, cell biology, immunology, computer science and engineering, as well as post-baccalaureate students and those who have completed a college degree are encouraged to apply.

> Juvenile Justice Opportunity: Become a Volunteer @FLY

Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY) is an award-winning organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of violence, crime, and incarceration of teens. FLY works with youth ages 14- 17 in the juvenile justice system and those at risk of entering the system. FLY’s nationally recognized law curriculum uses role-plays, debates, and mock city council hearings to capture youth interest, educate them about the law, and build skills like anger management, problem solving, communication, and resisting negative peer pressure. Highly trained volunteers and FLY staff teach the course in teams of 2-4, developing rapport with youth and giving them access to positive role models. The 12- Internships and Volunteering Opportunities: January 9, 2017 week course covers a range of topics, including theft, vandalism, hate crimes, drugs and alcohol, the Three-Strikes Law, Proposition 21, and gangs.

Many FLY law program volunteers are current students from respected colleges and universities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Others are attorneys or individuals who are passionate about working with at-risk or system involved youth.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Superior Court Pretrial Services Division provides community ties information about defendants to help the judges determine their eligibility for release on own recognizance, without posting bail, and follows up with cases as needed.

Under the supervision of staff, interns interview recently arrested defendants in the Wiley Manuel Courthouse and are responsible for calling references, verifying the information given, preparing a written report to the court, and making courtesy reminder calls to O.R.'d defendants. The Interns are present in court to monitor and record release dispositions.

The Pretrial Services Division offers a unique opportunity to learn about the court system from the inside. In this hands-on position, interns will have real responsibility that includes regular contact with defendants, judges, district attorneys, and public defenders. Interns can also earn up to 2 units for this internship!

INTERN QUALIFICATIONS -Must be at least 18 years old -At least a sophomore (Second year student, not units standing) at Berkeley -Should be interested in learning the principles and procedures of the criminal justice system -Attention to detail -Excellent communications skills -Ability to work both independently and on a team while with others

> Sage Mentorship Project Information

A wonderful opportunity for your students to gain experience mentoring young children and volunteer their time in a rewarding endeavor, The Sage Mentorship Project is UC Berkeley's largest one-on-one mentorship organization, each year facilitating hundreds of ongoing mentor-mentee relationships and matching newly recruited UC Berkeley students, across all majors, to mentees.

Created in 2007 to address the major disconnect between tutoring and mentoring programs, our mission is to provide youth, from the Berkeley and Oakland elementary schools we reach, with a personal connection to mentors through extra-curricular and academic activities, in order to build confidence and to serve as a stable source of motivation and inspiration to pursue higher education.

Through amazing support from the community, our organization has grown to encompass 12 Berkeley and Oakland elementary schools and coordinate over 600 active mentors. However, there is always a need for more high-achieving and dedicated UC Berkeley students who are committed to fostering long-lasting and education-driven relationships in the classroom and with the children.

UC Berkeley students can either choose to volunteer OR earn 1-2 units for hours spent mentoring through our DeCal (Psych 98/198)

In addition, they can choose which school at which they would like to mentor, as well as the most convenient hours to mentor depending on their schedule.

To become a mentor, they MUST attend a Mandatory Info Session:
