Degree awarded December 2015 ii © 2015 Justin Micah Pack iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Justin Micah Pack Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy December 2015 Title: Academics No Longer Think: How the Neoliberalization of Academia Leads to Thoughtlessness In my dissertation, I argue that the neoliberalization of higher education results in the university becoming less and less a place of wonder, self-cultivation and thinking and instead more and more a place to specialize, strategize and produce. This is a result of the volatile infusion and mixing of the logic of calculative rationality at work in consumer capitalism with the logic of scientific instrumental rationality already hegemonic in academia. This adds to the demands of the academic world of production the demands of the world of consumption. Now the academic (and also the student) is interpellated not only as a producer of knowledge but also as an object of consumption (to be consumed by others). -

Vallega, Dussel, and Radical Exteriority by Linda Martín Alcoff Vallega, Dussel, and Radical Exteriority by Linda Martín Alcoff Winning an anti-colonial war can create an intellectual crisis. After decades of negative arguments, a positive set of questions suddenly looms: who are we, and who do we want to become? In this important new work, Latin American Philosophy from Identity to Radical Exteriority (2014), Alejandro Vallega offers a critical analysis of the debates over liberation that emerged as Latin America gained independence from Spain, debates that continue into the present. After independence, Latin Americans found themselves still bounded by their colonial masters in the realm of ideas. Thus, a philosophical tradition began to emerge early on “distinguished by its struggle first for liberation and self-identification and later for decolonization, for recovering and giving articulation to lives and ways of thinking that have been suppressed, silenced, or virtually destroyed.”[1] Vallega’s focus is on the work of theorists who have been debating how best to free Latin American philosophy from the vestiges of European colonialism. These questions of liberation that unite such disparate works from Simón Bolívar writing in the early 1800s to Santiago Castro-Gómez writing today gave rise to new ideas about philosophical methodology as well as the understanding of philosophy itself. As this essay will discuss, what makes this tradition of thought strikingly distinct from most of the work still emerging from Europe and Anglo-dominant societies is the idea that philosophy has a historically specific, material context of enunciation, that emerges in a particular time and a place as a mechanism of reflection and intervention. -

Using a famous formulation by Heidegger as a guide (‘When we go to the well, when we go through the woods, we are always already going through the word “well”, through the word “woods”’), the analysis focuses on the connection Heidegger establishes between being (what woods and well ‘are’), understanding (something is understood ‘as’ woods or well), and temporality (human understanding of woods and well has changed since ancient Greek times, for example). -

NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS Kevin Aho is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Florida Gulf Coast University. He has published widely on Heidegger, phenomenology, and hermeneutics and is the author of Heidegger’s Neglect of the Body (Albany: SUNY Press, 2009), coauthor (with James Aho) of Body Matters: A Phenomenology of Sickness, Illness, and Disease (Lanham: Lexington Books, 2008), and coeditor (with Charles Guignon) of a new edition of Dostoevsky’s Notes from the Underground (Indianapolis: Hackett, 2009). He is currently completing a mono- graph entitled Existentialism: An Introduction. Emilia Angelova is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Trent University, Ontario, Canada, and in 2012–13 is Visiting Scholar at Concordia University, Montreal. Her research is in Twentieth-Century Continental Philosophy and Kant, including Nineteenth-Century Continental Philosophy. Recent work has been directed to study of themes raised by Kant and transformed by Heidegger, interpreting selfhood, temporality, freedom, and the imag- ination.
