The documentality of memory in the post-truth era Claire Scopsi Dicen-idf Cnam Paris, [email protected] This article compares the definitions of the document, produced by the document theorists and the arguments advanced by the French historical epistemology of the twentieth century in order to set what is a reliable documentary source. In the context of digital post-truth, the former criteria, based on the paradigm of truth and authenticity guaranteed by institutions and scientists, can be questioned. We suggest to consider the production of historical narratives as a design process, and to evaluate the truthfulness of a source according to their three regimes of documentality: textualization, auctorialisation and documentarisation. On the Methodological Role of Marxism in Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology Abstract While contemporary scholarship on Merleau-Ponty virtually overlooks his postwar existential Marxism, this paper argues that the conception of history contained in the latter plays a signifi- cant methodological role in supporting the notion of truth that operates within Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological analyses of embodiment and the perceived world. This is because this con- ception regards the world as an unfinished task, such that the sense and rationality attributed to its historical emergence conditions the phenomenological evidence used by Merleau-Ponty. The result is that the content of Phenomenology of Perception should be seen as implicated in the normative framework of Humanism and Terror. Keywords: Merleau-Ponty, Phenomenology, Methodology, Marxism, History On the Methodological Role of Marxism in Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology In her 2007 book Merleau-Ponty and Modern Politics after Anti-Humanism, Diana Coole made the claim (among others) that Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology is “profoundly and intrinsically political,”1 and in particular that it would behoove readers of his work to return to the so-called ‘communist question’ as he posed it in the immediate postwar period.2 For reasons that basical- ly form the substance of this paper, I think that these claims are generally correct and well- taken. But this is in spite of the fact that they go very distinctly against the grain of virtually all contemporary scholarship on Merleau-Ponty. For it is the case that very few scholars today – and this is particularly true of philosophers – have any serious interest in the political dimen- sions of Merleau-Ponty’s work. -

Macondo Time: On Alejandro Vallega’s Latin American Philosophy. From Identity to Radical Exteriority by Eduardo Mendieta Macondo Time: On Alejandro Vallega’s Latin American Philosophy. From Identity to Radical Exteriority by Eduardo Mendieta Alejandro Vallega’s Latin American Philosophy. From Identity to Radical Exteriority is an important contribution to the study of Latin American philosophy in the last half a century, more or less. While Vallega begins with Simon Bolivar’s famous “Jamaica Letter” from 1815, which he pairs with Leopoldo Zea’s writings on Latin American thought from the 1940s onwards, his focus is on the last twenty years of Latin American philosophical production. In fact, it can be said that Vallega is distinctly interested in the relationship between the philosophy of liberation, as it developed in the early seventies out of the debates among Zea, Bondy, and Dussel, and the more recent developments of what had been called decolonial thought in Quijano, Dussel, Mignolo, Lugones, Maldonado-Torres, and Castro-Gómez. The merit of Vallega’s book is that he sets out to map these developments and to bring us to date in the latest debates within a certain strain of Latin American philosophical thinking. The other merit of Vallega’s book is that he argues for what he calls a decolonial Latin American aesthetics that would begin from the radical exteriority of the Latin American experience that is framed by what he calls ana-chronic temporalities and their inspired sensibilities. Alejandro Vallega’s book, however, is not a history of Latin American philosophy in the last few decades, but an interpretation of a group of key figures. -

KELLY Phenomenology’s technical terminology can often seem to invalidate the natural attitude phenomenology aims to elucidate. One notable exception to this worry is Moral Emotions: Reclaiming the Evidence of the Heart, in which Anthony Steinbock remains faithful to, and profoundly elucidates, the lived-experience of moral emotions, describing the how and the what of emotive acts such as pride, shame, repentance, hope, etc. (Kelly). Steinbock’s work in general reveals a practicing phenomenologist who “liberates the ‘matters’ that we experience so that what they are … and their very appearing are not taken for granted in the experience” (Moral Emotions 17-18). Precise and meticulous concrete analyses of the intentional structure of everyday life (the natural attitude) pervade his writings. In his introduction to Moral Emotions, Steinbock specifically notes the importance of dwelling on the everyday: [S]ometimes … mundane examples … may be elucidating … [I]n the phenomenological method, the very simplicity and commonness of the example is no longer taken for granted in using it as an example, and to this extent, its immediacy is transcended in the direction of that which enables the situation to arise as such, toward the originality of the very banality. By bringing such common examples into focus … we go beyond the commonness of the example, and this opens a new world of meaning … that was taken for granted. The point is to see the fundamental … mystery in the ordinary but now as it is taken for granted. -

This is a result of the volatile infusion and mixing of the logic of calculative rationality at work in consumer capitalism with the logic of scientific instrumental rationality already hegemonic in academia. This adds to the demands of the academic world of production the demands of the world of consumption. Now the academic (and also the student) is interpellated not only as a producer of knowledge but also as an object of consumption (to be consumed by others). -

One curious feature of the American philosophical tradition is its ability to sustain and nurture fundamental reflection in an age in which such thinking is held to be antediluvian. The flood waters of scepticism and deconstruction seem to have rendered general categorical reflection powerless. Any talk about nature or world strikes contemporary fashion as a throwback to a pre-critical era in which philosophers naively trusted in their ability to overcome the imperial projections of a self which was unable, because of its fragmented state, to justify such projections. To attempt to reflect outside of the paradigm of the text is to evidence a serious insensitivity to the hermeneutic turn which has supposedly swept all historical debris from its path. The felony is compounded when it is asserted that the tradition of metaphysics has deposited recognizable and vigorous outcroppings of truth in its movement toward validation. What for some appears as a geological formation of great strength and beauty appears to the contemporary gaze as an obstruction to its open movement and hermeneutic free play. Were we to join in the chorus of doubting Thomases we would have little time for a perspective which affirms the ability of human probing to make sense of our history and our world. -

The pagination of this version does not conform to the pagination of the original document.) The American philosopher John William Miller was born in Rochester, New York on January 8, 1895. After attending public schools in Rochester, he studied at Harvard College in 1912-13. For financial reasons he transferred to the University of Rochester for the years 1913 to 1915, then returned to Harvard for his senior year, receiving his A. B. degree in 1916. After working for a year in a Rochester electric company he volunteered for ambulance corps duty in France with Base Hospital 44. In 1919, motivated to enter the field of philosophy by his experience of the First World War, he returned to Harvard as a graduate student in philosophy, receiving his master's degree in 1921 and his doctorate in 1922. Among his teachers were R. B. Perry and E. B. Holt, both of the realist persuasion, and W. E. Hocking and C. I. Lewis on the more idealist side; it was in the tension between these philosophical camps that Miller worked out his own stand.(1) From 1922 to 1924 Miller taught at Connecticut College, during which time he married Katherine S. Gisel. In 1924 he moved to Williams College where, apart from interludes of summer teaching at the University of Rochester and Boston University and serving as acting professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota in 1938-39, he spent the balance of his teaching career. -

Idealist Affinities: John William Miller and Josiah Royce By Mark D. Moorman [Posted with permission of Mark D. Moorman. Presented at the 39th annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy, New York City, March 15-17, 2012.] This paper will compare the philosophies of John William Miller and Josiah Royce with regard to philosophical idealism. We hope to highlight the idealist strain in Miller’s thought by showing some affinities with similar themes in Royce. The relaxed term “affinity” suits the vagaries of the term “idealism” itself.(1) Royce was well aware of this malleable breadth. Post-Kantian idealism, viewed in its whole range of manifestation, is not any one theory so much as a tendency, a spirit, a disposition to interpret life and human nature and the world in a certain general way—a tendency, meanwhile, so plastic, so manifold, so lively, as to be capable of appealing to extremely different minds, and of expressing itself in numerous hostile teachings.(2) The equivocity of the term idealism renders our comparison more a matter of loose ‘family resemblances’ than of clear cut categories. There is second difficulty with idealism as a point of comparison, its reputation. Discussing certain impediments to the reception of Miller’s work, Vincent Colapietro points out that Miller’s idealism is “likely to make him seem outdated and even quaint.”(3) Much of the revolt against idealism in the Twentieth century took the form of hasty ab extra dismissals which left caricatures and low regard in their wake.(4) Association with German idealism came to imply, not depth, but a lack of rigor. -
