Varieties of Religious Naturalism
Varieties of Religious Naturalism Wesley J. Wildman — Boston University — Spring 2010 — STH TT861/TT961 Course Description The aim of this course is learn about varieties of religious naturalism and how they have been, and can be, incorporated into philosophical and theological reflection. The seminar will read a variety of works in contemporary religious naturalism, from twentieth-century classics to current contributions, and from theoretical analyses of the meaning of naturalism to surveys attempting to map out the territory of plausible viewpoints. We will also track the close relationship between religious naturalism and both ecologically-rooted forms of spirituality and nature-centered forms of mysticism. The class is intended for advanced masters students and doctoral candidates interested in contemporary forms of philosophical and theological reflection on nature and God, and in forms of spirituality rooted in the natural world. Students registered at the 900-level have readings and a bibliographic task to complete over and above the obligations of students registered at the 800-level. Classes will meet once a week on Wednesdays from 8:00 to 11:00 in STH 319. Each class will be conducted in the seminar discussion format with lectures given by the instructor as needed or requested. The 800-level version of this course counts (1) as an MTS Core Concentration course for Science and Religion, for Theology, and for Area B; and (2) as an MDiv Theology 3 Core Elective. It may also count (3) as a requirement for a BTI Certificate program in science and religion. The main product of the course will be a research paper on some aspect of the course material, topic to be approved in advance by the instructor (50%; 3,000 words for 800-level students, 5,000 words for 900-level students). -

Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Chemistry Jaap van Brakel Abstract: In this paper I assess the relation between philosophy of chemistry and (general) philosophy of science, focusing on those themes in the philoso- phy of chemistry that may bring about major revisions or extensions of cur- rent philosophy of science. Three themes can claim to make a unique contri- bution to philosophy of science: first, the variety of materials in the (natural and artificial) world; second, extending the world by making new stuff; and, third, specific features of the relations between chemistry and physics. Introduction Chemistry is unique and distinguishes itself from all other sciences, with respect to three broad issues: • A (variety of) stuff perspective, requiring conceptual analysis of the notion of stuff or material (Sections 4 and 5). • A making stuff perspective: the transformation of stuff by chemical reaction or phase transition (Section 6). • The pivotal role of the relations between chemistry and physics in connection with the question how everything fits together (Section 7). All themes in the philosophy of chemistry can be classified in one of these three clusters or make contributions to general philosophy of science that, as yet , are not particularly different from similar contributions from other sci- ences (Section 3). I do not exclude the possibility of there being more than three clusters of philosophical issues unique to philosophy of chemistry, but I am not aware of any as yet. Moreover, highlighting the issues discussed in Sections 5-7 does not mean that issues reviewed in Section 3 are less im- portant in revising the philosophy of science. -

Introduction In the eleventh century Anselm introduced a concept of God that is now widely accepted among Judaeo-Christian-Islamic theists: that than which no greater can be thought.1 Anselm presented primarily two applications of this concept: (i) We can construct the ontological argument for the existence of God from this concept; (ii) we can derive from this concept the proposition that God has such individual attributes as omniscience, omnipotence and omnibenevolence. Over the last nine hundred years philosophers have concentrated on these applications of the Anselmian concept of God. As to (i), they have tried to examine the cogency of the ontological argument. Some have attempted, in particular, to construct objections to the argument and some have tried to defend or improve on it. As to (ii), philosophers have tried to analyse the concepts of omniscience, omnipotence and omnibenevolence. Some have tried, in particular, to provide proper formulations of these attributes and some have tried to show the incoherence of and inconsistency between these attributes. Ironically, however, philosophers have rarely examined in detail the Anselmian concept of God itself. In exactly what sense is God that than which no greater can be thought? Macondo Time: On Alejandro Vallega’s Latin American Philosophy. From Identity to Radical Exteriority by Eduardo Mendieta Macondo Time: On Alejandro Vallega’s Latin American Philosophy. From Identity to Radical Exteriority by Eduardo Mendieta Alejandro Vallega’s Latin American Philosophy. From Identity to Radical Exteriority is an important contribution to the study of Latin American philosophy in the last half a century, more or less. While Vallega begins with Simon Bolivar’s famous “Jamaica Letter” from 1815, which he pairs with Leopoldo Zea’s writings on Latin American thought from the 1940s onwards, his focus is on the last twenty years of Latin American philosophical production. In fact, it can be said that Vallega is distinctly interested in the relationship between the philosophy of liberation, as it developed in the early seventies out of the debates among Zea, Bondy, and Dussel, and the more recent developments of what had been called decolonial thought in Quijano, Dussel, Mignolo, Lugones, Maldonado-Torres, and Castro-Gómez. The merit of Vallega’s book is that he sets out to map these developments and to bring us to date in the latest debates within a certain strain of Latin American philosophical thinking. The other merit of Vallega’s book is that he argues for what he calls a decolonial Latin American aesthetics that would begin from the radical exteriority of the Latin American experience that is framed by what he calls ana-chronic temporalities and their inspired sensibilities. Alejandro Vallega’s book, however, is not a history of Latin American philosophy in the last few decades, but an interpretation of a group of key figures. -
“Grounding and Omniscience” (PDF)
Grounding and Omniscience Abstract I’m going to argue that omniscience is impossible and therefore that there is no God.1 The argument turns on the notion of grounding. After illustrating and clarifying that notion, I’ll start the argument in earnest. The first step will be to lay out five claims, one of which is the claim that there is an omniscient being, and the other four of which are claims about grounding. I’ll prove that these five claims are inconsistent. Then I’ll argue for the truth of each of them except the claim that there is an omniscient being. From these arguments it follows that there are no omniscient beings and thus that there is no God. §1. Stage Setting The best way to get a grip on the notion of grounding – or more exactly, for our purposes, the notion of partial grounding - is by considering examples. (By “partial grounding” I mean “at-least-partial grounding”, just as mereologists mean “at-least-part of” by “part of”.) The first example hearkens back to Plato’s Euthyphro. Suppose that a theorist claims that as a matter of metaphysical necessity, a given act is morally right if and only if it is approved of by God. At first blush at least, it is plausible that this theorist owes us an answer to following question: when acts are right, are they right because God approves of them, or does he approve of them because they are right? We all understand this question right away, right when we first hear it. -

Each philosophy simply represents a unique conviction concerning the nature of the teaching/learning process. This study could serve as a grounded theory for Jordanian childhood teachers to comprehend the need for a clear educational philosophy within the Jordanian educational system. In addition, this research study would draw Jordanian childhood teachers' interest to be acquainted more with the educational principles of such philosophical theory. The researchers employed a questionnaire consisted of twenty one items, which correspond to the educational principles of naturalism. The quantitative approach is used to gather data as one of the techniques and descriptive due to its suitability for this study. The study findings revealed that Jordanian childhood education teachers' perspectives toward the implications of naturalism as an educational philosophy were positive for all domains; curriculum, aims, and activities. This is a result of the volatile infusion and mixing of the logic of calculative rationality at work in consumer capitalism with the logic of scientific instrumental rationality already hegemonic in academia. This adds to the demands of the academic world of production the demands of the world of consumption. Now the academic (and also the student) is interpellated not only as a producer of knowledge but also as an object of consumption (to be consumed by others). -

Essays in the Philosophy of Humanism 25.2 (2017) 209–220 ISSN 1522-7340 (print) ISSN 2052-8388 (online) https://doi.org/10.1558/eph.34830 Naturalistic Theism Teed Rockwell Sonoma State University [email protected] Abstract Many modern theological debates are built around a false dichotomy between 1) an atheism which asserts that the universe was created by purposeless me- chanical processes and 2) acceptance of a religious system which requires both faith in the infallibility of sacred texts and belief in a supernatural God. I propose a form of naturalistic theism, which rejects sacred texts as unjustified, and supernaturalism as incoherent. I argue that rejecting these two elements of traditional organized religion would have a strongly positive impact on the beliefs and practices of religion, even though many religious people feel strongly attached to them. It is belief in sacred texts that is responsible for most of the evil done in the name of religion, not belief in God. Many of the strongest arguments for atheism work only against a supernatural God, and have no impact on the question of the existence of a natural God. One curious feature of the American philosophical tradition is its ability to sustain and nurture fundamental reflection in an age in which such thinking is held to be antediluvian. The flood waters of scepticism and deconstruction seem to have rendered general categorical reflection powerless. Any talk about nature or world strikes contemporary fashion as a throwback to a pre-critical era in which philosophers naively trusted in their ability to overcome the imperial projections of a self which was unable, because of its fragmented state, to justify such projections. To attempt to reflect outside of the paradigm of the text is to evidence a serious insensitivity to the hermeneutic turn which has supposedly swept all historical debris from its path. The felony is compounded when it is asserted that the tradition of metaphysics has deposited recognizable and vigorous outcroppings of truth in its movement toward validation. What for some appears as a geological formation of great strength and beauty appears to the contemporary gaze as an obstruction to its open movement and hermeneutic free play. Were we to join in the chorus of doubting Thomases we would have little time for a perspective which affirms the ability of human probing to make sense of our history and our world. -
