technisch - wirtschaftlichen Ziel strebende städte- bauliche G estaltungswille mit der staatsformenden Idee von der deutschen Gemeinsamkeit. Stand noch vor 50 Jahren der Begriff Stadtbau ohne Kontur in der Dämmerung der Ahnungen, heute ist das Ringen nach städtebaulicher Erkenntnis Kampf um feste, klare Weltanschauung geworden, ein leidenschaftliches Suchen nach der gem ein- samen, allen Deutschen verständlichen Sprache, da- mit wir nicht weiter aneinander vorbeibauen, w ie wir stets aneinander vorbeireden, vorbeiw irt- schaften. vorbei Gesetze machen.
Es ist nötig, zuvor uns das klar zu machen, wenn wir Hermann Jansen unsere Herzenswünsche darbringen w ollen an dem läge, da der immer junge mit blanken Augen, tatfroh und frisch zum 60. Male ein Neujahr seines Lebens feiert. Aus den Tiefen seines W esens schlug die Flamme, die

Denn der S t a cl t b a u w ill Bindungen w ieder- herstellen, clie verloren gingen. Er w ill aus einem Haufen nebeneinander und durcheinander leben- der Individuen eine Gemeinschaft machen. Er w ill allem Bauen den Sinn geben. W ie es ihm gilt, die Stadt äußerlich als Plastik harmonisch einzuordnen in die Massen und Räume der Landschaft, so w ill er innerlich die Bürgerschaft dieser Stadt ein- ordnen in das wirtschaftliche, politische und kul- turelle Gesam tleben des Volkes, deren Teil sie ist. Menschen konnte das G efühl dafür aufstehen, daß Stadtbau bitterernste Verantwortung bedeutet, eine Fehre, die er als sein Bestes an seine Schüler weitergibt. Aus solchen Mannes Seele erstand auch der starke Glaube an den Sieg der Idee, dieser unbeirrbare Glaube, der Hermann J a n - s e n s W irken stetig vorwärts und aufwärts trug und ihn humorvoll mit Unverstand und Miß-

Was jene Zeitung schrieb, ist längst in Er- füllung gegangen. Stadtbaupläne sind keine schön kolorierten Bilder aus der Vogelperspektive mehr, an denen man sich ergötzt und die man dann an die Wand hängt oder in die Schublade legt. Stadt- baupläne sind handfeste W erkzeichnungen ge- worden für tägliche Arbeit, unentbehrlich für die- jenigen, die verantwortlich an der Spitze der Ge- meinden stehen, Pläne, ohne die moderne Gemein- wesen nicht mehr verwaltet werden können, wenn Verwaltung einen Sinn haben soll und rationelle Wirtschaft mit Boden und Menschen bedeutet.
Wenn diese Erkenntnis heute Allgem eingut geworden ist, und ihre Nutzung für Volk und Staat durch Gesetz gesichert werden soll und wird, dann verdanken w ir das in erster Linie Hermann Jansen. Als er vor 25 Jahren damit begann, seinen Gedanken Form zu geben, den Stadtbau den Klammern eines öden Formalismus entriß und ihn aus der flächigen Gebundenheit des Straßen- und Kanalplanes in die dritte Dimension hob und erst körperlich werden ließ, stand er ziemlich allein. W enig Menschen begriffen damals, daß da etwas vor sich ging, das für die Zukunft unseres Volkes von allergrößter Bedeutung werden sollte. verstand sich abfinden ließ. Ein solcher Mensch zu sein, ist Gnade.
Und es ist Gnade, wenn ein Schaffender in der
Vollkraft seines Lebens die Freude hat zu sehen, daß seine Ideen W urzeln schlagen und die Geister von ihnen ergriffen werden. Vor 10 Jahren schrieb am Vortage seines 50. Geburtstages eine große Berliner Zeitung: „Professor Hermann Jansen, der führende Architekt der deutschen Städtebauer, wird morgen, am 28. Mai, fünfzig Jahre alt. D ie neue Zeit, für die eine verjüngte Boden- und Bau- politik zu den wesentlichen Aufgaben gehören

  • Nachdem Jansen schon im Jahre 1918

durch Berufung des Kultusministers M itglied des Senats der preußischen Akadem ie der Künste ge- worden war, wurde ihm an jenem 50. Geburts- tage von Rektor und Senat der Technischen Hoch- schule in Stuttgart die Würde eines Dr.-Ing. E. h. verliehen „auf den einstim m igen Antrag der Architekturabteilung dem Architekten Hermann Jansen in Berlin als dem Gründer und Führer der modernen Städtebaukunst .

The Wałbrzych housing settlements are crucial due to the fact that they were among the first of their kind, not only in Lower Silesia, but in the whole of the Weimar Republic. The concepts developed during the designing process soon spread beyond the borders of the country. On the basis of literature and source studies it was possible to reconstruct design ideas concerning the composition of green areas in most housing estates in the discussed area. The most interesting were presented, grouped according to the landscape and functional aspects of the use of greenery in housing estates. This made it possible to select specific solutions applied by designers, to indicate sources of inspiration and theoretically developed rules, which both then and now seem to be extremely adequate. Foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923 after the war of independence 1. This study reveals the original drawings had been a fresh start for Turkey in the way to build and empower a concerning the first development plan of the modern, civilized country in Anatolia (1). The newly established state had city of Adana for the first time. The author required assistance, mostly in fields of architecture and planning in order wishes to express her gratitude to Prof. Gunnar Brands and Mehmetcan Akpınar to achieve Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his fellow statesmen’s objectives, who kindly helped to obtain the drawings as the Kemalist ideology envisaged Turkish cities to form an anti-thesis in from Architekturmuseum TU Berlin. their clarity to the classical Ottoman towns (Doğramacı, 2007), which were shaped spontaneously according to Islamic principles and monarchic rules, characterized with organic, narrow streets and compact chaotic layouts (Aktüre, 1989). Consequently the Turkish Government had begun to invite foreign experts to give advice and assistance on development issues, and in the following decades approximately forty German, Austrian and Swiss architects came to practice in Turkey (Tümer, 1998). Furthermore, the Turkish Government undertook an international competition in 1927 for the development plan of the newly formed capital city Ankara, in order to constitute a model for the future of the nation and give impulses to many other cities in the country.

I chose to focus on slightly different time periods in the two cities—the 1930s in Ankara and the 1950s in Baghdad— since these were defining periods of urban planning and nationalism-formulation in each. They are also periods that demonstrate well how modernity and nationalism were realized in the built environment. The degree to which architectural modernism was modified in each case was determined by the transmission of new ideas to Turkey and Iraq, education of and communication between foreign and local architects and the influence of nationalism. The history of modern Turkey and Iraq are very different, but architecture helps demonstrate two unique yet not entirely inseparable experiences of modernity in the post-Ottoman Middle East. With the coming of modernity and the threat of European imperialism in the Ottoman Period, Turkey, as the home of the empire’s administration, and Iraq, then as the three provinces Mosul, Baghdad and Basra, underwent varying degrees of modernization reforms, beginning in the Tanzimat Period (1839-1876).

Plan Macià, Barcelona, 1933. © Col- legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya, Barcelona This essay proposes a comparative analysis between two parallel moments in the advancement of modern urbanism and urban housing in Spain before the Civil War: the most discussed in the historiography, the Plan Macià for Barcelona by José Luis Sert and the GATCPAC, in collaboration of Le Corbusier (1931-1938) (Figure 1); the Anteproyecto del trazado viario y urbanización de Madrid by architect Secundino Zuazo Ugalde, with the initial collaboration of German planner Hermann Jansen (1929; 1930-1936). Unique in this situation is the fact that those Spanish architects built, at the same time than the master plan for their respective city, an experimental housing block— the Casa Bloc (1933-1936) in Barcelona and the Casa de Las Flores in Madrid (1929-32)—whose urban and architectural characteristics concretized their conception of the modern city. The paper argues that, even though their respective visions of the city and blocks strongly differed in urban form and architectural language, they both embodied a particular Southern approach to the modern city and urban life, which contrasted with contemporary examples in Northern Europe. The master plans were not implemented, but the buildings, damaged or mutilated after 1936, have been renovated or reconstructed. They remain as two exceptional references in the short history of modernism in pre- Civil War Spain, as well as continuous sources of inspiration for contemporary housing in Spain.
