Pharaohs were the king or Queen of Egypt. Most were men but some well- known pharaohs, such as Nefertiti and Cleopatra, were women.

A Pharaoh was the most important and powerful person in the kingdom. They were the head of the government and high priest of every temple.The people of Egypt considered the pharaoh to be a half- person and half-god.

The Pharaoh owned all of Egypt and had been chosen the Gods themselves.

The Ancient believed that their Pharaoh was the god Horus, son of , the sun god. When a pharaoh died he was believed to be united with the sun and then a new Horus ruled on earth.

Where were Pharaohs buried?

Because the pharaohs were believed to be the God Horus, their burials had to be as royal and extravagant as possible. In the Old and Middle Kingdoms, Egyptian kings were buried in pyramids. About 50 royal pyramids have survived. They were built on the edge of deserts, close to the River Nile.

In the New Kingdom Egyptian kings were buried in tombs in the at Thebes near . These tombs were tunnels cut deep into the natural rock to protect the pharoah and their belongings from grave robbers and tomb raiders.

Candidate No. 1: II (1213 - 1279 BC)

Ramesses II was one of the longest ruling pharaohs of . He was called Ramesses the Great and ruled for 67 years. It is said that Ramesses lived for over 80 years. The average person lived to about 40 so he must have seemed like a god. Rameses II was a warrior. He fought many battles against the Syrians, and Libyans. He secured the borders of the Empire. He also created peace treaties, especially with the Hittites, so he was not at war throughout his reign. He became Prince of Egypt when he was 15 and led battles at 22. He became pharaoh after his father died when he was 25. He was a fantastic builder too and built many fantastic temples. ramesseum

He even created his own capital city, Pi­Ramesses which was very powerful in his reign.

He ended his reign with over 100 children. This meant his children were his heirs and would take over after his death.

Candidate No.2: Tutankhamen (1327 - 1336 BC)

At the age of nine Tutankhamen became pharaoh. King Tut, as a lot of people call him, was too young to rule Egypt so his uncle , who was the highest minister, ruled for him while he was a boy.

Tut married Ankhsenoomun­ his sister. They had no children so King Tut had no heirs to take over.

He was not pharaoh for long but has become the most famous pharaoh of all when his tomb was found by Howard Carter. In his reign, he changed religion back to believing in the highest God, Ra. He also built many temples across Egypt. He rebuilt temples that other pharoahs had destroyed also. Tutankhamen died at 18. His body was found with his skull bashed in. It is thought that Ay may have had something to do with the sudden and mysterious death. However there are other conspiracies that his wife killed him but others say he died from a harpooning accident or a accident. His death is one of the greatest mysteries in history.

Candidate No 3: Hatshepsut (1458 - 1473 BC)

The first female Pharoah, Hatshepsut who was the first wife II. After Thutmose's death, his son, Thutmose III, (by a minor wife) was named the heir. Because the boy was so young, Hatshepsut ruled with him until she declared herself pharaoh.

She was one of the first female pharaohs. Many in Egypt would have believed she would be a terrible pharoah because she was a woman. She dressed not as a lady, but in men's clothes to be more respected. She is considered the best female pharoah of all time. She ruled for over 15 years and accomplished a lot. She often looks like a man in because people thought he was a as strong as a man whilst she was a pharoah.

She sent men on sea voyages to other parts of Africa. She met new tribes, traded with them and brought back items never seen in Egypt before. She grew the economy and made Egypt rich. She even fought with men during battles.

Hatshepsut also built many, many temples. She showed how powerful and wealthy she was by building amazing temples.

• Hatshepsut disappeared after Thutmose III reclaimed the throne, and what became of her is a mystery.
