NEW IDEAS FOR NATO 2030

EDITOR’s Letter

ave you ever felt the”overchoice” effect? It is a concept in psychology usually related to consumers and retailers: having too many options may eventually decrease the Hmotivation to select one, and even the satisfaction made after said decision. However, other theories suggest just the opposite. In daily life, with the wide range of options that we have, sometimes it is just “too much”. It is incredible the number of choices to make from the moment that we wake up: food to eat, clothes to wear, films to watch, products to buy, etc. These are decisions to make that could show positive or negative impact on us depending on how we are or how we feel at that moment, and most of them are made in an unconscious way, as it is part of a routine. The results of “overchoice” or “choice overload”, both terms introduced by Alvin Toffler in the 1970 Future Shock book could, in some occasions, adversely result in pressure, dissatisfaction or confusion. But how something that could be so positive could turn into overwhelming? That is the key to the multiple-choice lifestyle that we have. We should learn how to return to simplicity and basics. Make it simple and easy for yourself when exploring and looking at possibilities during the month of February!

his year due to the Pandemic, we weren’t able to organize the traditional “Italian TChristmas Market”, held every year in SHAPE, from which we were always able to do some charity for different associations. Even though this year the holiday spirit was different, Christmas is always the mostly awaited nativity, the Italian women in SHAPE (IWIS) wanted to contribute to the bring up the atmosphere! Therefore we decided to support a wonderful initiative, by purchasing a traditional Italian sweets, Panettone, and donate the all the profit to “Il nostro focolare ONLUS”.

This association, founded in May 2007, was born thanks to the will of some parents and friends of disabled children. Due to the pandemic, they couldn’t achieve all the projects they had plan to carry out during the ye a r. The initiative was a great success! The Italian community in SHAPE, and not only, has shown a great heart in supporting the cause. I would like to thank whoever helped to achieve this amazing goal in supporting the association, as well as the Italian Military Representative at SHAPE.

Thank you for making us live and experience the Christmas Spirit once again this year, even during this difficult time!!

ith 2020 finally behind us, people are looking for new opportunities even amidst the Wongoing pandemic. When I was deployed to Afghanistan during my first NATO assignment in 2013, there were limited off-duty activities. The newly chartered Toastmasters club was a welcome addition as I had never participated in a meeting before. The mission to provide members with a supportive and positive learning experience to develop communication and leadership skills greatly enhances our military capabilities. That is why I continued to be a Toastmasters member at future duty stations in South Korea, Oklahoma and now at SHAPE. I have yet to meet my fellow SHAPE Toastmasters in person but online meetings are the next best thing which allows us to extend our interactions. Even though we have been virtual for almost a year, new advances have taken place where members from across the globe can also participate with our small club. James Hsiau The first meeting of the year, we had a four club event spanning three continents. This was definitely not possible prior to the current crisis. Our horizons have been broadened due to people willing to step out of their comfort zone. The risk to benefit ratio is very much skewed to allow personal growth. Come as a guest at no cost and learn a variety of topics based on the diverse member backgrounds. Humorous speeches are a staple so don’t be afraid of mindless PowerPoint presentations. You are not obligated to speak but will be given plenty of chances in a non-judgmental environment. James Hsiau with his fellow Toastmasters in South Korea

Pope Francis has also approved adding the Dec. 10 feast of Our Lady of Loreto to all calendars and liturgical books for the celebration of the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours. For this reason, since its foundation, the Italian Air Force has devotedly honored its Celestial Patron, also dedicating chapels in its Air Bases and Entities. 22 SCL MOTIVATE YOURSELF!

et’s face it; life can be tough. During the past year, ever since the pandemic crept into our lives, it’s Lfair to say that life has become a lot more difficult for many of us. Support isn’t always available when we feel that we may need it. Sometimes, we have to be self-motivators. Motivation is nothing more than a desire to do something; anything. This can be in your professional life, academic life or even personal life. It’s all about pushing yourself to accomplish your goals, no matter what they are. Motivating yourself isn’t hard, if you follow a few tips.

Think outside the box

We live in a box; a social and professional box where we are taught, directly or indirectly, how to function in certain situations and circumstances. Get out of that box! Yes, you are comfortable living in it because it’s familiar. It’s also stifling your creativity and sense of adventure. Let’s face it, to grow; we need challenges in our lives. Without them we cannot continue to expand our minds and become more skillful. Do things badly Probably the main reason we don’t attempt to do certain things is because we feel that we’re not very good at it. As a child we all enjoyed drawing until one day we stopped. Maybe somebody told you that your scribble drawings weren’t very good. Maybe you felt that they weren’t any good, so you stopped. Do what you enjoy doing! If you don’t do them well, then do them badly. Trust me; you will get better at whatever it is that you’re doing. So go back to creating. There is an old saying that practice makes perfect. What you create may not be perfect but at least its being created. Be the problem In today’s society people who struggle with problems So why not be nice? Why not make somebody’s day? call themselves victims. This is what the media tells And the best way to do good things for somebody is us – we are victims. But once we see ourselves as the to do them anonymously. problem, then we personalize it and realize that since If a friend is down on his luck and in need of a few we are the problem, then we can also be the solution. Euros, why not help him out? This is certainly opposite of being the victim with no power to fix the situation. Tell yourself, “I am the You don’t have to tell him and he’ll probably feel problem; my beliefs, my ideals, my prejudices make better if he doesn’t know who it was. It doesn’t have me the problem.” When you become the problem, to be money. You can do simple things like letting that you can also become the solution. car come into your lane instead of closing the gap. If you are nice to somebody then chances are that they Go ahead, make somebody s day ’ will be nice to somebody else and before you know I have always believed that what goes around comes it, you’ve become responsible for a local epidemic of around. If you’re not very nice, then I’m And face it, you feel better when you make someone sure all that will catch up to you one day too. else feel better.

www.shape2day.com SCL 23 Make a list When you go to the grocery store, chances are that you made a list of what you need to buy. If you’re shopping for a party or a barbeque, then you definitely have a list. So why are not you making a list for your life? What do you want to achieve in your life before you die, or even before you depart SHAPE after your tour? What do you want to do and where do you want to go? Write it down and keep it handy so that you can look at it often and also add to it. Seeing things written down makes them seem more “real” and will keep you focused on achieving your goals. After all, isn’t your life more important than your grocery list? Yes, life can be tough but if you have a plan you are in a better position to achieve your goals and to just be happy. If you can achieve happiness, then you have succeeded where many have failed. As the old Chinese proverb says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

You're over here – and so are we. With easy ways to contact our helpful, locally knowledgeable associates, and offices across Europe, you can trust us to be there for you and your family.

The International Jewish Center offers a weekly educational program in English for children from 10:00am - 12:30pm. This is a great opportunity to meet and befriend other international Jewish children and families. We introduce students to Hebrew, prayer, religious traditions, and the modern Jewish experience. We begin with a Tots class for children from 3 years, and we provide Jewish education through Bar/Bat Mitzvah with an emphasis on creative expression. The school is led by our Israeli Head Teacher and our American Rabbi and staffed by dedicated and experienced teachers. Please contact [email protected] or www.ijc.be
