6 President’s Report 2010-2011

Wet years often follow dry years, and so it was this season when record rains and devastating floods played havoc with cricket right across the state with, in many cases, more than half of scheduled fixtures unable to be completed. Once again as it was with the Black Saturday fires two years ago, Cricket Victoria stepped up to the crease and along with local, State and Federal Governments, helped get cricket bowling along again, although in some cases grounds will be lucky if they can be played on even next season.

We thank President, Geoff Tamblyn, C.E.O Tony Dodermaide and the staff at Cricket Victoria, not only for the prompt response regarding the floods, but also for the general good working relationship our two bodies enjoy. The Community Recovery Fund has allowed help to go quickly to where it was most needed and we thank Chris Harris and the Regional Cricket Managers for their prompt and on going assistance. A challenge for our board and Regions is the Australian Country Cricket Strategy and to this end John Harris with his vast country cricket knowledge has worked closely with us in developing our input. It will be on going and challenging but we need to look outside the square and make things happen and not just sit back and let them happen and just complain. While the Cricket Victoria Game Development Committee, under new chairman Russell Thomas, examines their own role, we must coninue to lobby strongly through it over issues like the escalating cost of the Milo In2 Cricket program which threatens the very grass roots of our game, the recruitment of the very young and their parents, our future volunteers.

The volunteer awards program was again highlighted by a breakfast on day three of the M.C.G Test and was well received by all. It’s a small way of saying a very big thank you to an integral part of our cricket family. The 20/20 format was used for the Premier Cricket country round this year and I thank the premier clubs and their country hosts for their innovative pre match activities and while I believe next season they will return to their longer, one day format, these are still an important fixture to showcase top grade cricket outside the metropolitan area. Also I wish to make many thanks to Premier and Sub District clubs for the use of their grounds and facilities in the staging of Country Week in at times very trying climate conditions. The Kookaburra T20 Final between (VCCL) country club East Belmont and the VMCU’s Buckley Ridges at the M.C.G was initially washed out but, following strong lobbying, the match was rescheduled, and our thanks go to Tony Dodemaide and the M.C.C. for allowing the game to be played on the hallowed turf at the end of the Sheffield Shield season, the game duly being won yet again by the country side. The Platypus Melbourne Country Week covered elsewhere in this report in detail was again successfully staged in early February. Congratulations go to all sides contesting the finals on the Friday, held in trying weather circumstances, but especially to the winners of each division being Geelong in Provincial, Leongatha

7 in Division Two, Benalla in Division Three and Mornington Peninsula 2 in Division Four.

Our Regional Under 21 competition, dominated in recent years by Central Highlands, saw them again in the Final played at Ballarat’s historic Eastern Oval. However, this time they had their colours lowered by a very good Gippsland Pride. From this game and earlier under 21 fixture matches, a VCCL Under 21 was selected to play the VMCU at Waverly, but unfortunately this game was washed out and unable to be rescheduled. Many thanks to the Victorian Metropolitan President, Kevin Noy, and his Cricket Union with whom we have an excellent working relationship.

While our efforts were ultimately unsuccessful at the Australian Country Cricket Championships held in Bunbury, Western , it was as much to do with contrived results in games involving other states on the final day that saw us finish fourth, when we may have finished first. Had we too agreed to enter into what our players and staff felt, “just wasn’t cricket”, we may have been the victors. Congratulations to our team for being more concerned about the spirit of the game than the result. Among the highlights of the carnival was the selection of Tim Wright and Richard Tibbett in the Australian Country Team. To reach the standard we did was an achievement, thanks to the initial squad of players who took part in the trials, which were badly effected by poor weather, particularly the indoor session at the M.C.G. nets and the game against the Sub District Association at Lara. We have developed a keen rivalry with the “Subbies” Association and look forward to continuing our close working relationship with their President, Jack Sheahan. Thanks also to Jack and the Sub District for the country week luncheon at Caulfield on the Thursday of Country Week.

In regards our VCCL representative side, thanks to our selectors led by Don Cooper for their work in selecting all our VCCL sides, our manager Keith Thompson, captain Brad Hauenstein and especially our players. It is an honour to be selected to represent Victoria. We now look forward to the National Championships being staged in Geelong in 2012. Good luck to the organising committee in their efforts I know you will do our state proud.

To our wonderful sponsors Platypus, Knox Tavern, Events World Wide Travel, Primary Edge, Health Guard, CLADS, The Plough Hotel, Subway, Newbery, Top Caps and a new sponsor this year in RedTXT thank you all and I urge our country cricket family to support these sponsors.

For meritorious contributions to the conduct of V.C.CL. programs and competitions, the R.F. Merriman Service Medallion was awarded to Region Five’s, Kyabram stalwart Gus Underwood. It was with great sadness we noted the passing during the year of V.C.C.L. Life member Ron Salter of Bendigo and long time Victorian

8 Cricket Association delegate to the V.C.C.L. Leo Finch. May they rest in peace.

We welcomed Kevin Lanigan fron Region 7 to the board after a short stint served by Wayne Collins following the death of Alan Daniel. Finally to our hard working T.E.A.M. Secretary, Keith Thompson, Administration Manager, Peter McCudden, Treasurer, Graham Kerr, Vice Presidents Don Cooper and Ed Parker, Assistant Secretary Bill Williams and our eight Regional Representatives your efforts are not only appreciated by myself but all people involved in Victorian Country Cricket.

Yours in Cricket Warren Riches VCCL President Garry (Gus) Underwood from Kyabram secures the R.F Merriman Award from V.C.CL President Warren Riches.

9 SECRETARY’S ADDENDUM

It is an enthralling task to write an addendum when most, if not all topics, are so well covered elsewhere in this Annual Report; but I must mention some things again to an extent.

Our National Championship team played in the 2011 event hosted by Western Australian Country in the very pleasant city of Bunbury, with the 8 team competition now into its second season. But sadly again we finished in the middle of the pack, which President Riches has addressed elsewhere in the Report. The 2012 competition will be here in Victoria with the VCCL hosting duties being awarded to the Geelong Cricket Association, whom I’m sure will do us all proud with the event they put together. In 2013 the event will be hosted by Queensland in Bundaberg, who previously held the 2003 Championships.

I would like to extend my thanks to Platypus Sporting Goods Australia and the Brown Family for their continued support of the VCCL and country cricket in general. Many of our affiliates are associated with the Platypus Brand and at the VCCL our links go back many seasons now and the support towards our VCCL Under 21 competition and State team plus in the past two seasons with the VCCL Melbourne Country Week, I look forward to continuing this most enduring relationship well into the future.

I must also extend thanks to all of our VCCL sponsors which include:- Healthguard First Aid, Knox Tavern, RedText, Clads, Primary Edge, Newbery and more.

In time I hope to travel around the State and have the opportunity to attend various Regional meetings and catch up with many of the hard working local Region and Association officials.

In this ever-changing climate for the game of cricket, all country cricket from the players to their Clubs and Associations as well as the VCCL need to ensure that we are getting our voices heard and our concerns or ideas given the opportunities they deserve. As Cricket faces many battles, like so many sports in the country areas of Australia, one thing we must try to ensure is that we are not too reliant upon others, who then feel they can steer us upon their course. We need to be able to take our own or at the very least have our planned route considered favourably.

I thank Ken Jacobs for his valuable support, guidance and assistance with various areas of cricket administration and his support of country cricket in general.

Of course I would also like to express appreciation to all the people at Cricket Victoria, the VSDCA and the VMCU with whom we deal often during a season in making the game of cricket progress. Also to all at the VCCL, the Members of the Board, most notably President Warren Riches, and the team of Office Bearers, as well as the Regions and Member Associations, it has been a pleasure to continue to work with you all.

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF VICTORIAN COUNTRY CRICKET LEAGUE INC

Report on the Financial Report

I have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report of Victorian Country Cricket League Inc (the association), which comprises the balance sheet as at 31 May 2011, the income statement and summary of significant accounting policies and the statement by members of the committee.

Committee’s Responsibility for the Financial Report The committee of the association is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report and has determined that the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements, which form part of the financial report, are consistent with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act (Victoria) and are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The committee’s responsibilities also include establishing and maintaining internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error; selecting and applying appropriate accounting policies; and making accounting estimates that are reasonable in the circumstances.

Auditor’s Responsibility My responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on my audit. No opinion is expressed as to whether the accounting policies used, as described in Note 1, are appropriate to meet the needs of the members. I conducted the audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards require that I comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.

The financial report has been prepared for distribution to members for the purpose of fulfilling the committee’s financial reporting under the Associations Incorporation Act (Victoria). I disclaim any assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial report to which it relates, to any person other than the members, or for any purpose other than that for which it was prepared.

I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit opinion.

Independence In conducting the audit, I have complied with the independence requirements of Australian professional ethical pronouncements.

Qualification It is not practical for Victorian Country Cricket League Inc to maintain an effective system of internal control over Grants and Sale of Clothing/Uniforms until their initial entry in the accounting records. Accordingly, my audit in relation to Grants and Sale of Clothing/Uniforms was limited to amounts recorded.

Qualified Audit Opinion In my opinion, subject to the effects of such adjustments, if any, as might have determined to be necessary had the limitations discussed in the qualification paragraph not existed, the financial report of Victorian Country Cricket League Inc presents fairly in all material respects the financial position of Victorian Country Cricket League Inc as of 31 May 2011 and of its financial performance for the year then ended in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial statements and the Associations Incorporation Act (Victoria).

Melbourne Country Cricket Week in 2011 was conducted in the week 7th – 11th February, the slightly earlier start due to the introduction of the 20/20 format matches into the Premier League’s normal fixtures. Initially 27 teams were entered from 26 Association members with Mornington Peninsula being the only one in two divisions, but a late entry from Albury Wodonga was accepted ridding Division 4 of the bye. The Association to withdraw from Country Week 2011 after taking part the previous season was Sunraysia after 50 years participation. However, it was pleasing the nominations saw the return of Cricket Shepparton and Central Gippsland after missing a few seasons.

Once again the annual carnival of Victorian country cricket was most successful with all scheduled games being played. This was quite remarkable in 2011 because the fact that the 14 matches on the Monday got underway at all was miraculous. On the Friday and Saturday prior to the first round, Melbourne experienced a huge deluge with major flooding and some suburbs registering over 200 mm of rain. Some Monday games started late and were shortened, but it was testimony to the skill and dedication of the ground curators at Premier League and Sub District Clubs that play was possible at all. These sentiments have been conveyed to the respective bodies.

Weather was fine for the rest of the week and all games were played in good conditions. The unusually wet summer had severely interfered in cricket fixtures this season, but it has done wonders for the grounds after many years of drought, because they all looked an absolute picture. The only hiccup, sadly, was that rain late on Friday afternoon caused the abandonment of the Provincial and Division 4 Finals, when they were both heading for an exciting finish. The other two divisional finals were completed in time.

An inovation introduced this year, as a result of a new Sponsorship with the company Redtxt, allowed the transmission, free of charge each night, of all scores on that day to anyone who had registered on their mobile phone. This was much appreciated by players, officials and supporters and over 300 persons registered. The League thanks Russell Morris and his partners for this rather unique opportunity.

Cricket Victoria again provided the financial base from which Melbourne Country Week was conducted with payments to Premier League and Sub District Clubs for umpires, catering and ground preparation costs. Also in 2011, the League’s long-term sponsor, the Platypus Sporting Goods Company, claimed the naming rights for the Carnival and provided all match balls. The League again thanks the Brown family.

Melbourne Country Week was again organised at the centre at Cricket Victoria headquarters in Jolimont, where the usual communication services were provided, including the new SMS score service. Our gratitude once again is extended to IT Manager, Rebecca Brown, and her staff mem bers, Adrian and Matt.

23 Also the daily collection and collation of scores, results, ladders and media releases for Country Week were managed through the national Mycricket on-line competition program with the assistance of Board members, Messrs Thompson, Williams, Parker and Cooper. As we progress towards shifting these functions to the competing teams, all Associations were encouraged in 2011, although not compulsory, to enter their daily match results into Mycricket via their own websites. I am pleased to report that well over half the teams did this with only one minor hiccup, and it also means we now have a permanent record of those 2011 games, including player performances.

From match reports received, the standard of umpiring was excellent with only one adverse report from the captains in the 60 matches played. There were, however, some complaints from teams regarding the catering by host clubs for lunches. There did not appear to be any issues with the nature and quality of food provided, but more so the quantity. It seems that some host clubs were catering for only the two IXs on the field that day and the umpires, whereas most would consist of squads of 15 or so and other team officials such as managers and scorers.

This issue was confirmed following the week by a letter received from the General Manager of the Carlton CC, Mr John McConville. From personal experience I know that Carlton always provides ample food for players and their team management, but John emphasised that the money provided to host Clubs by Cricket Victoria for each game does not cover the costs of staging the games and catering for something like 40 people, which is a more realistic figure. It is an issue that the League will need to take up with Cricket Victoria before next season.

The competition in Country Week in 2010-11 was again based on four Divisions with eight teams in the first two divisions and six in the other two. The League was able to restore the Yarra Valley Association to Division 3, following their voluntary drop to Four the previous year, and that proved a wise decisioin asYarra Valley reached the Final in Division 3. The other five teams in Division 4 certainly welcomed the fact that the bye was not necessary with the late entry of Albury Wodonga. All of the expected promotions and relegations as per the League’s Rules were able to be implemented.

Melbourne Country Week was again financed mainly through a grant from Cricket Victoria and the League is indebted to CEO, Tony Dodemaide, and his staff for their continual support. The cooperation and assistance of CV Premier Cricket Manager, Peter Binns, is a major reason that Melbourne Country Week can run so smoothly and I am personally indebted to him.

Also there are others persons, who deserve the League’s gratitude, especially VSDCA Secretary, Ken Hilton, and Umpires’ Coordinator, Mark Hanton. Again the VCCL owes a vote of thanks to the VSDCA for hosting the annual match and luncheon for Melbourne Country Week. This season it was hosted by the Caulfield CC at Caulfield Park and the VCCL extends our gratitude to VSDCA President, Jack Sheehan and the Club members, who prepared an excellent meal.

Coverage by the State media of Melbourne Country Week 2011 was spasmodic and it is indeed an on-going and difficult task to convince the major newspapers to publish Country Week scores, results and ladders each day. It wasn’t for lack of trying, because all match results, scores and ladders were sent to the agency AAP by the required time each night, but only the Age published them most days. The League is appreciative of the support given by the Weekly Times and particularly local and regional media.

24 Overall a total of 527 players were registered by their Associations to participate in Country Week 2011, an increase of 36 on last year, with the following breakdown: Provincial 161 players Division 2 136 players Division 3 127 players Division 4 103 players
