Inside Versity in Society, and Describes the Roles of Discovery, Learning Purdue President and Engagement Newsletter Fall 2001 Purdue & ABE Reaching for “ The Next Level ” In August of 2000 Martin Jischke became the new presi- dent of Purdue University. As part of his mandate from the Board of Trustees he organized a new strategic planning initia- tive, whose purpose would be to develop a set of goals and plans to take the University to the next level of excellence. Over the past year a committee of university faculty, staff and administrators has developed a strategic plan for the Univer- sity. The title of the new strategic plan is “The Next Level: Preeminence”. Katehi New Dean of Engineering Schools Linda P. Katehi, associate dean for academic affairs in the University of Michigan Col- lege of Engineering, has been named dean of Purdue’s Schools of Engineering. Purdue Pro- vost Sally Frost-Mason announced the appointment, effective January 1, 2002. “We are excited that Linda Katehi has joined Purdue as dean of the Schools of Engineering,” Frost-Mason said. “She brings not only impeccable academic and administrative credentials but also an enthusiasm and vigor that will pay rich dividends to the Purdue family.” Katehi (kuh-TAY-hee) received her doctorate and master’s degrees in electrical engi- neering from the University of California, Los Angeles. She earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. Katehi says, “The position of dean of engineering at Purdue provides an exciting opportunity to lead a strong engineering program into a future of academic excellence, visionary research and memorable teaching and learning experiences for the students. During the search process, I came to understand that Purdue aims at assuming a leadership position in the present environment of economic, technological and social change. In the future there will be a regu- lar exchange of ideas with similar groups as we move ABE to the next level. 4 Accreditation Reviews Completed In September the Department completed several accreditation reviews. The Accreditation Board for Engi- neering and Technology (ABET) conducted a review of the Agricultural & Biological Engineering and Food Pro- cess Engineering programs. Our ABE review was conducted along with other programs in the Schools of Engineer- ing. ABET accreditation is essential for students interested in taking the Engineering Fundamentals exam as the first step toward becoming licensed engineers. For the Agricultural Systems Management program, the review is conducted by the ASAE P-206 Commit- tee. The ASM program was evaluated based on materials presented to the committee and a decision to confirm the outcomes was taken. Purdue ABE is a leader in defining ASM programs around the country and continues to be among the best. The implementation of the “outcomes based assessment” process has been an important component of all the program reviews. Outcomes Based Assessments focus on how well our graduates function once they graduate instead of how many science and laboratory courses were taken. This assessment process includes sending ques- tionnaires to alumni and their employers. Over the past two years we have surveyed employers and generally received excellent reviews on our graduates.

    July 28, 2006 An Open Letter to the Higher Education Community: The United States Senate will have the opportunity to consider Senate Bill 2695, the Federal Research Public Access Act of 2006 (FRPAA). FRPAA would require Federal agencies whose extramural research budgets exceed $100 million to develop policies ensuring open, public access to the research supported by their grants or conducted by their employees. The debate about the merits of the Bill has been reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education1, The New York Times2, The Economist3 and elsewhere. The stakes are high, but the Bill embodies core ideals shared by higher education, research institutions and their partners everywhere. We believe that this legislation represents a watershed and provides an opportunity for the entire U.S. higher education and research community to draw upon their traditional partnerships and collaboratively realize the unquestionably good intentions of the Bill’s framers – broadening access to publicly funded research in order to accelerate the advancement of knowledge and maximize the related public good. By ensuring broad and diverse access to taxpayer-funded research the Bill also supports the intuitive and democratic principle that, with reasonable exceptions for issues of national security, the public ought to have access to the results of activities it funds. The broad dissemination of the results of scholarly inquiry and discourse is essential for higher education to fulfill its long-standing commitment to the advancement and conveyance of knowledge. Indeed, it is mission critical. For the land-grant and publicly funded institutions among us, it addresses the complementary commitment to public service and public access that is included in our charters.

    Linda P.B. Katehi Biography Administrative Service Professor Katehi served as the sixth chancellor of the University of California, Davis, from August 2009 to August 2016. As chief executive officer, she oversaw all aspects of the university’s teaching, research and public service mission. As Chancellor, Linda Katehi advanced a number of crucial initiatives that have enhanced UC Davis’ reputation for excellence, including the 2020 Initiative, the UC Davis ADVANCE program, the establishment of the UC Davis World Food Center, and the university’s first-ever $1 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign – the Campaign for UC Davis. The campaign inspired more than 109,739 donors to commit $1.13 billion to the university. Previously, Professor Katehi served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2006 – 2009); the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering and Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University (2001 – 2006); and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Graduate Education in the College of Engineering and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan (1984 – 2001). Research and Education In August 2016, Professor Katehi retired from her administrative service and became Chancellor Emerita and a Distinguished Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC Davis. In October 2015, she was awarded the National Academy of Engineering Simon Ramo Founders Award for her visionary leadership in engineering research. President Kevin Sabo commented after the vote: “The pepper spray incident shaped student protest and campus response for the last five years. After the incident, Chancellor Katehi abdicated responsibility, but still felt it was necessary to initiate an impossible hunt to save her reputation. This is not a lapse of judgment, but a pattern of Katehi’s blatant disregard of her responsibility as a UC leader. Katehi is collecting a $425K salary, ample compensation given the fact that students on her campus desperately need resources like affordable housing, crisis food intervention, mental health support, and financial aid. Students regularly request leaders in Sacramento to provide much-needed revenue to the UC. We hold our administration to a high standard that it spends that money responsibility. It was both an exciting and challenging mission. Exciting because the opportunity to reduce energy waste, save money, and mitigate environmental impact were large. It was challenging, too, because there were no models to emulate. UC Davis was the first university to attempt to network regulators, energy producers, large end-users, and industry to accelerate the commercialization of efficient technologies. The investment of talent, financial and political support was well justified, as you will see in the following pages. The UC Davis Energy Efficiency Center is a vibrant, growing and effective collaboration that drives new solutions in lighting, heating and air-conditioning, and hybrid and electric vehicles.
