Dosage Index, Dual Qualifier status, pedigree, Speed Ratings, prep race quality, Graded Stakes wins, workouts days before the Derby and a trainer’s Derby record are just a few of the criteria that people use when assessing a field of probable Derby contenders. These types of factors fall in and out of favor over the years and each has had its share of success in helping track down a Kentucky Derby winner. Each year, we are reminded of other important, proven screening criteria we should keep in mind as we handicap the Kentucky Derby. Examples would include the following: • Don’t bet to win on Derby entrants that have never run as a 2 year-old. Most recently, Curlin and Bodemeister tried to overcome this long-standing tenant but both came up a bit short in their respective Kentucky Derby endeavors. • Only one horse (Regret) has ever won the Derby off just 3 lifetime starts (make that only two horses now that Big Brown achieved this feat in 2008) • Post position 20 has never produced a winner (Big Brown busted that one as well and I’ll Have Another won from the 19 hole in 2012 so this screening criteria weakens some as a result) • Must have a final prep race run at the mile and eighth distance (Charismatic was able to break that barrier in winning the 1999 Kentucky Derby as have several second place Derby finishers) • Must

Upon shipping down to Dale Romans' winter base at Gulfstream Park, the trainer noticed the colt seemed to relish the dirt surface there, even after he disappointed in a grass allowance last month. Apparently the horse was trying to tell his connections something all along, as he jumped into a new dimension on the Gulfstream dirt on Sunday, recording an allowance victory in fast time and over a heavy favorite who had been 5-to-1 for the previous day's Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes, before scratching when he drew the outside post position. In notching a spiffy 6 on the Ragozin Sheets by completing 8 1/2 furlongs in 1:42 2/5, Storm Storm Runner held on gamely to win by a neck over Mississippi, and it was another 9 ¼ Runner ran himself right into the lengths back to the third-place finisher Cove Blue. 2016 TRIPLE CROWN TRAIL by Jean Derench In 1996, GRINDSTONE won the Louisiana Derby. He defeated Zarb's Magic which won the Arkansas Derby and then went on to defeat Baffert's Cavonnier in the Run for the Roses. Grindstone won half of his six lifetime races and the Kentucky Derby was his last career start. He eventually as the sire of Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone, which upset favored Smarty Jones in that event. Grindstone was by Derby winner Unbridled. Prior to 1996, you have to go back to Black Gold's victory in 1924 to find a Louisiana Derby winner that went on to glory in Kentucky. However, in 2003, Funny Cide ran second and future classic winners Risen Star, Creme Fraiche & Drosselmeyer placed in the event. That being said, do we have a Kentucky Derby winner in the field of 11 that are projected to face the starter at the Fair Grounds this Saturday (March 26, 2016). I don't think so. But it does shape up to be a good betting race. I've covered several of the horses in my previous columns. Let me begin by introducing you to a few of the others. UNCLE WALTER is trained by Michael Maker who has won the last two editions of the Louisiana Derby (the recently deceased Vicar's In Trouble in 2014 and last year with International Star). Vicar's in Trouble would be last to California Chrome (who races in Dubai this weekend) and International Star was injured and didn't make it to Kentucky. Maker's entry this year is a son of Uncle Mo out of the Unbridled's Song mare Look For Good.
