Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1
Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. KEY WORDS Latin poetry, pedagogy, popular music, music videos, song lyrics, Taylor Swift INTRODUCTION When I assign Roman poetry to my classes at a large research university, I re- ceive a decidedly unenthusiastic response. For many students, their experience with poetry of any sort, let alone ancient Latin verse, has been fraught with frustration, apprehension, and confusion. -

Sound Recording in the British Folk Revival: Ideology, Discourse and Practice, 1950–1975
Sound recording in the British folk revival: ideology, discourse and practice, 1950–1975 Matthew Ord Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of PhD International Centre for Music Studies Newcastle University March 2017 Abstract Although recent work in record production studies has advanced scholarly understandings of the contribution of sound recording to musical and social meaning, folk revival scholarship in Britain has yet to benefit from these insights. The revival’s recording practice took in a range of approaches and contexts including radio documentary, commercial studio productions and amateur field recordings. This thesis considers how these practices were mediated by revivalist beliefs and values, how recording was represented in revivalist discourse, and how its semiotic resources were incorporated into multimodal discourses about music, technology and traditional culture. Chapters 1 and 2 consider the role of recording in revivalist constructions of traditional culture and working class communities, contrasting the documentary realism of Topic’s single-mic field recordings with the consciously avant-garde style of the BBC’s Radio Ballads. The remaining three chapters explore how the sound of recorded folk was shaped by a mutually constitutive dialogue with popular music, with recordings constructing traditional performance as an authentic social practice in opposition to an Americanised studio sound equated with commercial/technological mediation. As the discourse of progressive rock elevated recording to an art practice associated with the global counterculture, however, opportunities arose for the incorporation of rock studio techniques in the interpretation of traditional song in the hybrid genre of folk-rock. Changes in studio practice and technical experiments with the semiotics of recorded sound experiments form the subject of the final two chapters. -
Obituary. T. D. Atkinson, F.R.I.B.A. Thomas Dinham
PAPER'S AND PROCEEDINGS 173 OBITUARY. T. D. ATKINSON, F.R.I.B.A. HOMAS DINHAM. ATKINSON died on the 29th of December 1948, aged 84. Architect, antiquary and author, This greatness lay even more in the power of his personality than in the quiet competence of his work in many fields. Although widely learned in several departments of archaeology, he possessed true humility and a whimsical wit, often turned against his own foibles. His classical outlook belonged more to the 18th than the. 19th century, but he was inspired by deep feeling uncommon in the Age of Taste. Injustice moved him to fierce indignation and he could be stern with folly, but he met life with kindness, generosity and nobility of spirit. Aided by an exceptional memory, he methodically amassed architectural facts under subject headings during a period of well over' half-a-century ; these extensive- collections now belong to the Society of Antiquaries; Local Style in English Architecture, published' in the last year of his life, summarised part of this garnered treasure as an introduction to the more detailed treatment he had projected, and for which " The Sources of Hampshire Architecture in Past Times " {Proceedings, Hants Field Club, XV, pt. 2) and " Local Character in the Ancient Architecture' • of Cambridgeshire" {Proceedings, Cambridge Antiquarian Society, XL) were drafts. Among his many, other published works, the great Architectural History of the Benedictine Monastery, at Ely (1933) takes pride of place, but Hampshire should treasure his Survey of the Street Architecture of Winchester (1934), an outstanding record and work of catholic appreciation which ought perpetually to be had in remembrance—and in.print. -

The Priory of St. Denys
HANTS FIELD CLUB, 1895 PLATE I. GROSE, DELT., 1773. ST. DENY'S PRIORY, WEST FRONT. ,. •: - . 155 THE PRIORY OF ST. DENYS. BY A. H. SKELTON. The Priory of Saint Dionysius or Denys, near Southamp- ton, belonged to the Canons regular of the Order of St. Augustine, and was situated on the western bank of the river Itchen, about two miles north of the walls of Southamp- ton. The Prior and Canons were lords of the manors of Northam and Portswood, both within the liberties although outside the walls of the town. As the Canons were endowed with the chapelries of All Saints, Holy Rood, St. Lawrence, and St. Michael, Southampton, and were responsible for the services therein, they were possibly more immediately associated with the religious life of the town than the rector of St. Mary's, the mother church of Southampton, which then stood, surrounded by fields, amidst the traces of the deserted Saxon town of Hampton, from which the in- habitants had migrated in the eleventh century, and founded a new town around the King's castle, in a more defensible position, on the western shore, abutting on the river Test. The Prior and Convent of St. Denys were also holders of property in Southampton, and owing to this connection, both civil .and religious, the Priory, although comparatively a small foundation, has engaged the attention of topographers and local historians, among whom may ' be mentioned Grose, Warner, Duthy, Woodward, Wilksi and the Rev. J. Silvester Davies, who, in his " History of Southampton," gives many interesting details relating to this house, but for the purposes of this notice it will suffice briefly to summarise these authorities. -
