Welcome to Alpenwelt Karwendel! These two mountain bikers have had a good laugh. They are returning from a break at Vereiner Alm. In the deep south of Germany, at the border with Austria, a pleasant valley with undula- ting meadows, lakes and streams extends between rocky peaks, forested mountain flanks and hills. Alpenwelt Karwendel with the three Upper Bavarian municipalities of Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau is surrounded by four mountain massifs: the Karwendel mountains and the Soiern group to the East, the Ester mountains to the North and the Wetterstein mountains to the South-West. Because of this, the region is the ideal starting point for all kinds of mountain bike and cycling tours. If you like to take it easy, you can linger in the valley between the flower meadows, lakes and the expansive river landscape of the Isar with its shingle and gravel banks. If you prefer the forested foothills, explore the Ester mountains and the Soiern group with their shady forest roads and single trails.

  • Wildfires in the Northern Limestone Alps
Geophysical Research Abstracts, Vol. 9, 07509, 2007 SRef-ID: 1607-7962/gra/EGU2007-A-07509 © European Geosciences Union 2007 Wildfires in the Northern Limestone Alps - the thin line between recovery and degradation K.-F. Wetzel (1), O. Sass (2), A. Friedmann (3) (1,2,3) Institute of Geography, University of Augsburg, Germany, [email protected] In the sub-alpine krummholz zone of the Northern Limestone Alps, numerous slopes can be observed which were severed by wildfires in the last centuries. Several histor- ical blazes burned the thick humus layers on the limestone bedrock which led to long lasting degradation. The affected areas are sharply separated from the surrounding slopes and are still noticeably bare of vegetation. An outweighing number of fires in the study area are due to anthropogenic influence like forestry, charcoal burning and arson for gaining pastures. Natural causes like strokes of lightning play a tangential role. Charcoal particles can be found almost everywhere in the soils of the study areas which shows that wildfire is an ubiquitous phenomenon in the northern Alps. The (by now) oldest black carbon samples were found on an apparently undisturbed slope and date back to 2,850 BP, which shows that full recovery is possible. However, under unfavourable conditions the time for the recovery of the ecosystems is estimated to be several centuries, if not centennials due to soil destruction and intensified geomorpho- logical processes. However, not all of the known historical wildfires had equally devastating effects. At the south-exposed side of the Inn valley, a mosaic of different stages of recovery and degradation is found today.
