  • You've Seen the Movie, Now Play The
“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.

CHARLOTTE’S WEB SITE: THE CONVERGENCE CULTURE OF CHILDREN’S PRINT AND DIGITAL LITERATURE By CATHLENA ANNA MARTIN A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2010 1 © 2010 Cathlena Anna Martin 2 To my family 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Above all, I thank my parents, who supported me throughout the entire process that led to this dissertation, including reading to me as a child, encouraging me in every academic and non-academic pursuit, and grounding me in the belief that I could do anything I set my mind to. Without them, I would not be Dr. Martin. And I am grateful to my sister, Tamara, and her husband, Phillip, for their letters, packages, shared books, and inspiration. I would not have pushed myself as hard without such an amazing big sister to compete with. Additionally, this project could not have been completed without the guidance and help of Dr. Kenneth Kidd. He provides the perfect blend of criticism and encouragement, revision and hope. Moreover, I want to thank my committee members—Dr. John Cech, Dr. Greg Ulmer, and Dr. Barbara Pace—for providing feedback and support throughout this process. I thank fellow kiddie litters, Julie Sinn Cassidy and Ramona Caponegro, for solidarity in our subject matter, and Rita Smith, for allowing me solace in the stacks of the Baldwin. And I thank two gaming ladies, Laurie Taylor and Lisa Dusenberry, for their passion and knowledge on all things digital. I thank the members of my dissertation seminar—Aaron Talbot, Joel Adams, and Mindy Cardozo—and editor friend Joi Tribble.

ENTERTAINMENT LAW REPORTER BUSINESS AFFAIRS Everybody Wants Some... (Equity from Advertisers, That Is) by Schuyler M. Moore The age of equity investment in films by advertisers is upon us. There has been a seismic shift in the last year, and everyone is getting in on the act. Here are just some of the developments: * Ford recently created a dedicated department with the sole task of stepping up Ford’s positioning in films, including, of necessity, equity investments. Importantly, the new department solves (at least for Ford) the current dilemma of getting the marketing and financial departments within big companies to talk to each other (no mean feat), which is necessary for these transactions to work. VOLUME 25, NUMBER 11, APRIL 2004 ENTERTAINMENT LAW REPORTER * Pepsi is funding at least one producer’s overhead and development, analogous to a studio “on the lot” deal. * Proctor & Gamble in Europe announced that it was committing equity investment for a slate of family oriented films to be produced by an Italian producer. * Miramax offered the prime vehicle slot in “The Green Hornet” up to the highest bidder, and was reportedly asking $35 million. * Lego waded in early, developing and funding a made-for-video film titled “Bionicle,” starring one of its toy lines. * Some studios, such as Sony, recognizing the importance of this development, have created a department with the sole responsibility of tapping this source of financing. * Management firms have entered the fray, with some of them hiring people to broker these deals. VOLUME 25, NUMBER 11, APRIL 2004 ENTERTAINMENT LAW REPORTER * As publicly reported, one film franchise, “Goal!,” a trilogy about the trials and tribulations of a soccer player, will have funding from adidas.
