Dat het westers boeddhisme echter nog een lange weg te gaan heeft, valt te lezen in het artikel over het Nava-yana en de rol daarvan in de industriële sa- menleving. `Nava-yana' was de term die Christmas Humphreys ooit bedacht om daarmee de nieuwe stroming aan te duiden die hier in het westen zou moeten ontstaan, na het historisch gegroeide Hinayana en Mahayana. Wat is er zo `Nava-yana' `westers' aan het boeddhisme in onze contreien. Waarin verschilt het van het 'oosters' kan de boeddhisme. Waarom voelen mensen zich hier en nu aangetrokken tot het boeddhisme. Waarom leemte van zit het boeddhisme anno 1999 zo in de lift. En, waar moet 'het' boeddhisme aan voldoen, wil het beantwoorden aan de behoeften van de industriële hedendaagse westerse mens om succesvol te zijn en aan te slaan. Allemaal vragen die uitgelokt samenleving werden door de twee woorden 'westers boeddhis- me'. De jezuïtische missionarissen maakten in de 17e en 18e eeuw al kennis met het Chinese en Japanse boeddhisme, maar de Duitse filosoof Arthur Scho- penhauer (1788-1860) wordt algemeen als een van de eersten beschouwd die zijn eigen denken voor een deel baseerde op het gedachtengoed van de Boeddha. Zo begint hij zijn bekendste werk 'Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung' met de woorden "De wereld is mijn voorstelling". Alle dingen zijn ons slechts als verschijnselen gegeven. De zichtba- re wereld is een 'schijn zonder wezen'. Daaraan koppelt hij de werking van de wil als uiteindelijke drijvende kracht achter ons bestaan, in tegenstel- ling tot de logische rede die bij de filosofen vóór KWARTAALBLAD BOEDDHISME JAARGANG 5 - NR I HEREST 1.999 hem in groot aanzien stond. De wil is oneindig, volgens Schopenhauer, en de bevrediging beperkt. Zen War Stories is a sequel to Victoria’s Zen at War (1997), which ex- plored the relationship between institutional Buddhism (especially Zen) and Japanese militarism before and during World War II. The first book discom- fited many Western students of Zen by showing how almost all Japanese Zen masters and institutions had been fervent supporters of colonialism and the Pacific War. This book supplements the earlier one. There are actually not many battlefield tales, as Victoria acknowledges in the preface, but the additional historical material he has dug up is almost as important and uncomfortable for Western Buddhists. Chapter One summarizes an interview with Nakajima Genj¯o(1915-2000), who had retired as head of the Hakuin branch of Rinzai Zen.     Richard Baker and the Myth of the Zen Roshi Stuart Lachs, October 2002 Introduction Most people think of Zen as being iconoclastic, anti-authoritarian, simple, direct, and unattached. Its raison d'etre is to produce people who possess a fundamental insight into life, people who are not fooled by appearances or ideas. The fact is that almost everything about Zen's presentation, practice, and rituals is aimed at producing people who give up their good sense with the promise of a greater gain in the future. While this is obviously a general statement that demands further qualification, it serves to introduce some of the basic problems to be dealt with here. Please keep it in mind. This is not a new idea nor is it unique to Chan/Zen. David Hume said in his Of the First principles of Government (1758) that "Nothing appears more surprising to those who consider human affairs with a philosophical eye than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few, and the implicit submission with which men resign their own sentiments and passions to those of their rulers." I believe that the reason for this surrender, in the case of Zen, is clear, structural, and self-perpetuating. What I mean by the "Zen" institution, for the simple purpose of this conversation, is the organized set of structures that support the standard model of Zen. According to this model, mind-to-mind transmission began with an encounter between the historical Buddha Sakyamuni and Mahakasyapa, and continued, in an unbroken lineage, through twenty-eight Indian Patriarchs.

A second tier of the system consisted of Ten Temples. This system was extended throughout Japan, effectively giving control to the central government, which administered this system. Not all Rinzai Zen organisations were under such strict state control. The Rinka monasteries, which were primarily located in rural areas rather than cities, had a greater degree of independence.     So˘n Master T’oeong So˘ngch’o˘l’s Legacy: A Reflection on the Political Background of the Korean Sudden/Gradual Debate Bernard Senécal (So˘ Myo˘ngwo˘n) To reform contemporary Korean Buddhism T’oeong So˘ngch’o˘l proclaimed a return to the Buddha S´a¯kyamuni’s teaching, promoted the sudden/sudden doctrine of awakening to the Middle Path through practice of Keyword Meditation (kanhwaso˘n), and adamantly condemned Pojo Chinul’s (1158-1210) sudden/gradual approach, thus giving rise to the ongoing Korean sudden/gradual debate. Despite So˘ngch’o˘l’s reputation as a world renouncer who steered clear of politics, this essay examines the socio-political underpinnings of his reformation and defines six points of structural resonance between it and the way of the authoritarian state under which it was carried out. Those six points form a constellation suggesting that the famous master’s hermeneutics of Buddhism, i.e. his overall interpretation of the tradition in the second half of the twentieth century, reflect the national as well as the geo-strategic tensions resulting from the division of the Korean peninsula and the Cold War until 1988. Therefore, at the dawn of the 25th anniversary of the ROK’s democratization, when envisaging the future of the Korean peninsula, Korean Buddhism and the worldwide propagation of Keyword Meditation, it is imperative to keep in mind the socio-political context that shaped So˘ngch’o˘l’s approach and continues to inform his legacy.
