Undp Art Gold Albania Programme UNDP ART GOLD ALBANIA PROGRAMME IDEASS INITIATIVE The second mission of “La Compagnia dei Parchi” and Federparchi for sustainable tourism in Albania Foreword 11th to 14th December 2006 The previous mission of the President of “La Compagnia dei Parchi” Mr. Roberto Di Vincenzo and the President of Federparchi Mr. Matteo Fusilli to Albania for the promotion of “La Compagnia dei Parchi” Innovation had been held on December, 11 to 14, 2006, in the framework of the IDEASS activities for the promotion of “La Compagnia dei Parchi” innovation in Albania. The meeting allowed the participants to discuss on the previous experience carried out by the IDEASS Initiative for the transfer of the “La Compagnia dei Parchi” innovation in the Country, and to plan the current mission’s works During the meeting, the CdP experts were provided with information on the Thethi and Kelmendi area. A technical discussion followed in which the GTZ GmbH Programme Manager, Mr. Ismail Beka made a brief presentation on the activities carried out by the GTZ GmbH and the Small Grants Programme of Global Environmental Facility (GEF/SGP) in Thethi area. The GTZ GmbH and GEF/SGP in order to create a sustainable livelihood for the residents of Theth while aiming at the preservation of the unique landscape, is supporting the development of eco tourism in this region, said Mr.Beka. Focal point of this support has so far been the creation of accommodation facilities without harming the naturally grown identity of this area. Thus, the project supported the renovation and modernization of traditional houses and their transformation in guesthouses, whose standard is basic, but still comfortable. There are six guesthouses available with an overall capacity of 63 single beds. All houses dispose of two to four caringly equipped guestrooms (up to 4 beds each) and at least two fully modernized bathrooms (European standard). All accommodation facilities are ideal for backpackers as well as for organized groups. The valley of Theth is for sure one of the best places to start exploring the Albanian Alps. The surrounding mountains are full of hiking trails and stunning beauty offering a wide variety of hiking destinations varying from the leisurely walks to the more technically challenging ones for the expert climber. Detailed maps regarding hiking tours are being realized by another joint project between GEF/SGP and GTZ. UNDP Albania-UN Echo and Cultural Tourism Programme is accomplishing a research study about tourism in Thethi. This study is a joint effort of the United Nations Development Programme- Albania, the GEF/SGP, the Central American Institute for Business Administration (INCAE), and the Government of Albania, - said Mr. Marco Bordoni, UNDP Albania – UN Fellow for Tourism and Environment. • THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE of RAZËM Figure II-0.1 – Razëm on the Map of Albania
PART II THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE OF RAZËM Figure II-0.1 – Razëm on the map of Albania. CHAPTER II.0 General overview Villages Administrative Administrative Municipality Region Units Offices Vrith-Razëm Shkrel Koplik Malësi e Madhe Shkodër Razëm is a hamlet of the mountain village of Vrith, which is only 4 km away (Fig. II-0.1). After the administrative reform in 2015, Vrith became part of Malësi e Madhe, the northernmost of the Albanian municipalities and as such, a border place. This pe- culiar geographic location – mountainous isolation on the one hand, and the constant threat from neighbouring nations on the other – also resulted in the creation and de- velopment of specific social and cultural phenomena. Two examples worth mention- ing are the traditional rhapsodic chants based on the Eposi i Kreshnikëve1 (a cultural heritage of inestimable value) and the celebrated collection of customary laws gath- ered in the Kanun code2. Razëm lies within the Regional Natural Park of Shkrel (established as a protected area in 2014) and is considered the ‘gateway’ to the Western Albanian Alps. Together with the villages of Reç e Bogë, Razëm forms a triad of great interest from the point of view of tourism (Figs. II-0.2 and II-0.3). The Alpine area on which it stands is characterised by a vast network of trails and a series of high-altitude pastures (bjeshkë) with numerous mountain hut settlements 1 The chants of the oral tradition collected in the Epos narrate stories inspired by the wars against the enemies who came from beyond the Serbian border.

SERJANI1, H. HALLACl', A. NEZIRAJ1 & A. HALLACl' ABSTRACT Albania is one of the most karst-developed countries in Europe. Karst phenomena are related to soluted carbonate formations which cover of about 7300 km2 of Albanian territory and with sulfate evaporates rocks, which outcrop of about 500 km2. Typically alpine relief of average altitude 708 m above the sea level and high horizontal splitting are favorable for karst development. Karst and geological sites of karst origin are wide spread mainly in Albanian Alps and in Ionian zone. In Albanides there are determined surfaces and under ground karst forms which belong to the Neo-Pliocene-Quaternary age and deep karst forms belonging to the paleokarst in old formations.

DOI: 10.5772/intechopen.68899 Provisional chapter Chapter 4 The Unknown Southernmost Glaciers of Europe The Unknown Southernmost Glaciers of Europe Emil Gachev Emil Gachev Additional information is available at the end of the chapter Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.68899 Abstract This chapter presents the perennial firn/ice patches in the mountains of the Balkan Peninsula. The detailed study of these features in the last decades has proved that many of them are, in fact, small glaciers. They have survived without complete melting since the end of the Little Ice Age, and thus the time of their formation must have not later than in 14–15th century AD. At present, the existence of 16 small glaciers is suggested (and proved for some of them) in three mountains throughout the peninsula: Prokletije (mainly in Albania), Durmitor (in Montenegro) and Pirin (in Bulgaria), the biggest num- ber being found in Prokletije. The two small glaciers (glacierets) in Pirin mountain are at present the southernmost glacial masses in Europe (the only located south of 42°N). Despite the registered warming of high mountain climate, small glaciers on the Balkan Peninsula have shown no trends towards shrinkage for the last 23 years. Keywords: small glaciers, snow patches, Pirin, Durmitor, Prokletije 1. Introduction Few mountains in Europe host classical glaciers at present: The Alps, the Great Caucasus range, the Scandinavian mountains, Polar Ural and the Pyrenees [1]. Apart from them, there are numerous small bodies of firn and ice in other mountain ranges across Europe which are still of a permanent character, with their mass moving down by gravity.
