The writers of Victorian England first tried* to salvage humane culture for a new world of science, democracy, and industrialism. We owe to them and to Pre-Victorians like the prose Coleridge a revival of Christian thought, a new Classical renaissance (this time Greek rather than Latin), an unprecedented mastery of the facts about nature and man and, indeed, the very conception of "culture" that we take for granted in our education and in our social plan- ning. In that age, a consciousness that human life is subject to constant development, a sense of historicity, first spread throughout the general public, and literature for -The first time showed that intimate integration with its sociafback- ground which marks our modern culture. In protest against this came the aesthetic movement, another Victorian phe- nomenon that still commands and repels so much of our modern literary mind. These "new" attitudes cannot be understood without reading the literature that made them current. The Victorians are indispensable to bridge the gap that too often yawns between the traditional thought and art of the great ages of European mankind, and the imme- diate pursuits of present-day writers and readers. Thackeray is our best critic concerning our own van- PREFACE ity fair; we laugh at our own quiet struggles for rank and prestige in Barchester Towers; our proletarian novel goes back to Dickens, and, further, to the humanitarian ap- proach to industrial problems developed by Carlyle. We have taken Victorian literature as the best expression in our language of certain phases of modern civilization, certain experiences common to Western man. In most libraries, the Victorians probably take up about half the space devoted to English literature before 1900, and the same is true of the past literature still indulged in for pleasure and enlightenment by the reading public. Yet only a fraction of the valuable scholarship and sound liter- ary criticism by professional men of letters has been devoted to this vast and valuable treasure. It is so unexplored that often only specialists seem to have any real knowledge of the relevant facts and significant movements, even when these come closest home to us. Those who are not specialists in Victorian research have had no adequate guide to Vic- torian scholarship available at all. Those of us who are professors of Victorian literature have suffered from a lack of general informed discussion and synthesis. But the pres- ent series of essays, embodying the latest results of study by scholars who have been working in that field, should do much to supply the needed illumination and to provide a usable map for further explorations. This book deals with specifically Victorian contributions to our culture. Hence we have not tried to sketch the his- tory of any idea or form merely because it can be found in nineteenth-century England. Still less have we wished to include studies of single authors. It has been our intention rather to offer a frame, or various frames, within which these other kinds of studies could be worked out with fresh perspective. For instance, it was in this period that fiction reached its height in the older manner, and then passed over into new forms just as the transition was being made from traditional forms of verse to "modern" poetry, and from the "essay" to our modern prose and epigram. Even important biographical facts about many of the Victorians are as yet almost unknown, and facts that have been discovered have vi PREFACE not been assimilated in adequate biographies. What could we learn about the literary background of Victorian writers and their public by investigating their school curricula? How do current news items in any given year of the Queen's reign help us to interpret the force of a political generaliza- tion, a poetic allusion, a dramatic scene, or a fictional cari- cature? British insularity came to an end for better or for worse. English literature rediscovered Italy and the Ger- manic cultures. Meanwhile, the wall of antipathy between Burke and the democratic spirit of Jefferson, Shelley, and Republican France was being broken down as Burke's tra- ditional English wisdom was made accessible to us by his Victorian successors. And to maintain the sanity -of our own culture in these trying times, it would be well to recognize that Victorian literature preserves for us a rich treasury of comedy, wit, and humor. To stimulate the widest possible range of interest in Vic- torian study, we have encouraged diversity of approach in this book. The unity that has been given it resulted from the work of the committee put in charge of this project: Joseph Warren Beach, Charles Frederick Harrold, How- ard F. Lowry, Bradford Booth, Joseph E. Baker. Each contribution was read by at least two members of the committee, often by three, and sometimes by other contrib- utors. Though most of the essays have been given final form after careful discussion, we have not felt that differences should be ironed out. It seemed a more civilized policy to leave each contributor solely responsible for the statements he chose to make and the methods he wished to emphasize. No system has been imposed, no demands made or implied, save that each should offer an invitation to further intellec- tual adventure whereby we can better appropriate to our use, enjoyment, and understanding the wealth of Victorian ' literature. In the diatribe in Maud against mid-Victorian evils, Tennyson charges that "chalk and alum and plaster are sold to the poor for bread." A footnote in Marx's Kapital confirms this shameful prac- tice by citing the report of the "Committee of 1855 on the 1 Adulteration of Bread/' The Parliamentary Committee heard testimony of chemical experts between July 13 and August 8 of that year; Maud was on sale in the last week of July, simultaneously with a Times editorial of July 24 sup- porting the investigation. Nothing could have been more timely than Tennyson's allusion to a national scandal in- volving a great variety of foods and drugs. His information did not come from the expert testimony, for he had sent Maud to press on July 7, six days before the opening of the hearings; but the Parliamentary Blue Book and letters to the Times correcting details in its editorial give clues to his anticipatory accuracy. The Lancet revelations, confirming his expe- rience with fraud as a grocer's boy, had stirred a Birming- ham physician, John Postgate, to a publicity campaign for national legislation, which gained the support of a Radical member for Birmingham who became chairman of the in- vestigating committee. It is possible that Tennyson ob- tained other information through his friend Carlyle, ever on the alert for commercial dishonesty, since he obviously borrowed from Past and Present the substance of another verse in Maud: "When a Mammonite mother kills her babe for a burial fee/' Such is the variety of relations in which a line of Victo- rian poetry may stand to the society in which it was written.

The mature revolutionary proletarian novels will be discussed and highlighted in this study in terms of Marxist hermeneutics This new literary kind did not come into being prior to the imperialist era because the socio- economic requirements for this literary genre were non-existent and the proletarian movement did not enter into its decisive historical stage of development. This new genre of the novel appeared simultaneously in the works of Robert Tressell, Martin Anderson Nexo, Upton Sinclair and Maxim Gorky in the beginning of the twentieth century. In this era of imperialism, the proletarian novel came into existence, when the socio-historical ethos brought the proletarian movement into being as well as helped to organise and develop it on international level. At the end of this analytical and comparative study of them, the noticeable point is that the proletarian novels of that period share astonishing similarities with one another. Michael Duvall Disappointed that The Jungle did not result in a ground-swell of socialist sentiment, Upton Sinclair famously evaluated his best-known novel as a kind of failure. "I aimed at the public's heart," he wrote, "and by accident hit them in the stomach."1 Yet no one could doubt that Sinclair aimed at the public's heart, given The Jungle's sentimentality, but the idea that he hit the public in the stomach by accident obviously overstates the case. More likely, Sinclair aimed at the public's stomach, but hoped that the blow would cause moral outrage and a lasting change in the public's heart. He was following a venerable recipe for fomenting moral judgment: begin with your basic jeremiad, ladle in liberal amounts of the filthy and the revolting, and stir.2 As William Ian Miller affirms in The Anatomy of Disgust, Sinclair's gambit is right on target. Disgust and moral judgment are nearly always wrapped up together, for "except for the highest-toned discourses of moral philosophers, moral judgment seems almost to demand the idiom of disgust. That makes me sick! What revolting behavior! You give me the creeps!'3 Miller's illustration of how disgust surfaces in expressions of moral judgment highlights that disgust is encoded bodily. This is evidenced in the adjectives "sick" and "revolting" and the noun "the creeps," all three quite visceral in their tone and implications. Invoking the disgusting is but one way in which The Jungle enlists the body, in this case, the bodies of readers themselves.

  • An Indianapolis Adventure
    An Indianapolis Adventure By Donald E. Curtis Many members of The Literary Club will probably recall from our conversations that I am a self-confessed Sherlock Holmes enthusiast and a great fan of Victorian literature including Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope and, of course Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. What many probably do not know is that Doyle, the creator of the world’s greatest detective was very fond of Indianapolis and made a special effort on his third trip to America to have our city included in his itinerary as he had enjoyed his visit here so much on his first trip. In the fall of 1894, Arthur Conan Doyle, famed author of the Sherlock Holmes stories, made his first trip to the United States. He was on a “lecture circuit” under the management of Major J. B. Pond, and was booked to speak in many places on a variety of subjects. Major Pond was at the top of his profession at this time. He had begun as a journalist in abolitionist days, later served the Union Army during the Civil War and later sent ex-Mormons and anti-Mormons on the lecture trail. He gained further experience with the Redpath Lyceum Bureau of Boston managing tours for the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson. By 1879 Pond owned his own lecture company in New York and was the premier manager of entertainers, writers, and advocates of special causes such as women’s suffrage. Major Pond represented many luminaries including James Whitcomb Riley and Mark Twain. In 1894, Pond had a new special attraction to offer: the popular young British author Arthur Conan Doyle, well-known as the creator of the very popular Sherlock Holmes In preparation for this lecture tour, Doyle had constructed three addresses: the first was entitled “Facts About Fiction” with 1 comments on such writers as Thomas Hardy, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Rudyard Kipling.
