Page 11 2018 Cub Scout Akela Camp It is official, we have been approved for the All-Terrain Vehicle program at L&C Scout Camp! After years of patiently waiting for a positive response to our application, we Page 12 received word just last week that we are part of the 2018 rollout!!! We don’t have a lot New Eagles of details but here is what we know: Tips on Eagle Apps Our camp’s geography is going to make this an extra WOW! program! This will be a great draw to offer something new and exciting to returning Page 13 Scouters! NYLT Ranger Barry has already offered to jump an ATV through a ring of fire and Training Dates over three golf carts. (This offer has been firmly declined!) Scoutbook and Advancements More details will be on our website soon!

Page 14 The Keel Boat Express is HAPPENING! What is the KBE? It is a trolley system Sioux Council Staff that will offer rides to adult leaders up the hill at crucial times during the week. For now, it will be available only at high traffic times and only to adult leaders. This is in response to feedback from our previous attendees. The campers spoke and we listened! Much like the ATV program, this is a new development, so details are still firming up but please share the good news with other Scouters. On a side note, Ranger Barry is also not allowed to jump the trolley through the ring of fire and over any golf carts. Bad news for Ranger Barry, good news for our campers!

It is snowing (again) while I write this update. However, spring is just around the corner and we are all getting ready to fire up the outdoor Scout- ing season. Blue & Golds and Court of Honors are in full swing and we have many great things to celebrate.

Lewis & Clark Trail District has much to be proud of. Not only do we have great volunteers at the unit level, but we are also slowly but surely assem- bling a district committee that is second to none. Thanks to all of our volunteers, we were a silver Contacts level District in terms of JTE. Often metrics sound like one more piece of pointless reporting, District Chairman: Vacant but in this case, the national office has done a great job of building Journey to Excellence as a road map to success. Many of our unit leaders have District Commissioner: Vacant commented that, after using it for a few years, it really does help them stay on track. Thanks again District Director: Will Kennedy to everyone for leading the charge to success for (605) 670-8606 the boys! [email protected]

Tips on Eagle Applications

Glenda Kautz, Sioux Council registrar, attended a Prairie Hills roundtable at one point and shared some tips and hints about completing Eagle applications. Most issues arise from the back of the appli- cation. Here are a couple of the highlights:

--make sure that the position of responsibility starts after the Life board of review date; --please take note of the approved positions list! Assistant patrol leader does not count as a leadership position toward Eagle Scout; --the Scout himself must sign the application, certifying that everything is accurate and completed before his 18th birthday; --both the unit leader and the unit committee chair need to sign the application.

Also, we have some tips on preparing for Eagle projects from the Guide to Advancement:

--there is no set number of hours for an Eagle Scout project; --candidates cannot share projects; --there is no requirement that the project have “lasting value.”

Please also take note that the Sioux Council advancement committee has determined that District boards of review are the only approved method for conducting Eagle Scout boards of review. Parents should take note that once the application is signed and all paperwork turned in, it may be several weeks before a board is able to be convened. Please plan accordingly! Additionally, once the Eagle Board is concluded, it may take 3-6 weeks for the National Office to return everything. Please do not plan an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for earlier than 6 weeks after the Board is completed.

National Youth Leader Training (NYLT)

Your Troop can always use additional trained youth. National Youth Leader Training, NYLT, is the perfect opportunity.

NYLT will be held at Camp Shetek June 3rd to the 8th. Registration opened in January, so don’t let this oppor- tunity for your youth leaders to learn how to really lead! NYLT models the patrol method, letting youth lead youth, teaching each other. They return to your Troop ready to jump in, exhibit their skills and take your Troop to new heights.

Training:

Please take note of the training dates provided by the Sioux Council training team in 2018:

IOLS April 6-8 Iyataka BALOO April 7 Iyataka Sioux Training Academy April 28 Mitchell Wilderness First Aid May 5-6 Sioux Falls

For more on Sioux Council training, see the council website or contact Sheryl Oliver, council training chair ([email protected]). Scoutbook and Advancement Reports

We have come a long way for reporting advancement - from paper copies to printed copies to internet advance- ment and now to Scoutbook! What a great day it is to be advancing in BSA!

If your unit is syncing Scoutnet with your Scoutbook, good for you! It makes everyone’s job MUCH easier. However, you still need to print and turn in an advancement report when you purchase items from the Scout Shop. This ensures that your unit is purchasing what it needs. It also allows us to ensure that the sync got everything it is supposed to.

As always, without a valid advancement report, the Scout Shop will NOT sell you advancement items. You can email your order to the Scout Shop at [email protected].

If you have any questions, please contact your district advancement chair.
