I do not have the slightest doubt that the abolition of the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal was a massive mistake.

And I hate to say it but far too many subbies were sucked into a political campaign led by the Liberal Party, the large retailers and industry groups such as Natroads.

Treacherous Natroads have much to answer for in dumping their previous support for the RSRT and letting down the mums and dads running small trucking operations.

The Wheel Autumn 2017 3 The Legend of ALAN“Steedy” STEED A recently retired true blue collared union man and ex-Grace Removals heavy lifter

Alan Steed delivers a stinging attack on penalty rate cuts before going on to outline his plans for Collingwood to win the 2017 Premiership.

“Unlike the old bosses they haven’t come up through the ranks and have no bloody idea what it’s like to hump furniture around for a crust.”

Now that his humping days are over - in more ways than one – Alan is settling nicely into retirement.

He has a lovely little unit in Carlisle and keeps himself amused with reading and following his deep interest in local and world politics and downing the occasional coldie.

A Labor man thru and thru he will always be on the sidelines barracking for working class people

Of course no man is perfect and Alan has his down side – He’s a loyal black and white man who supports Collingwood and often gets down to Bassendean Oval to cheer on the long necked ducks.

Alan Steed is a gem of a bloke – a union legend who has joined the growing ranks of our Veterans’ Club which gives us the opportunity to catch up now and then.

Alan, we salute you brother. They don’t come much more true blue than you.

The Wheel Autumn 2017 5 Road Safety Commissioner listens to WA drivers

Road Safety Commissioner Kim Papalia has first-hand experience of the difficulties West Australian truckies face on our vast network of roads.

The Commissioner had a ‘truckie’s eye view’ as he took the wheel of a three-trailer road train last month, on a return trip between Karratha and Onslow.

“This was a sensational opportunity to gain insight,” said Mr Papalia. “It was a chance to find gaps in the infrastructure for trucks and other road users in regional WA, and work with these drivers on better road-side rest stops to combat fatigue and improve road safety.”

The Road Safety Commission has created an advisory framework including an Expert Panel, Advisory Body and a Vulnerable Road Users group, which is developing strategies to protect cyclists, motorbike riders, pedestrians, seniors and people with disabilities on our roads and roadsides.

Road Safety Alliances in the South West, Mid-West, Pilbara and Kalgoorlie-Esperance, and along the Great Eastern Highway are working to focus the efforts of main industry bodies, local and state governments on improving road safety for all road users.

The Wheatbelt Highway Safety Review has highlighted road safety issues along three busy routes in the region. Road improvement works are underway on Great Eastern Highway and Great Southern Highway, while Toodyay Road works are set to begin this year.

Finally, Road Safety Commission campaigns are changing attitudes in Perth and beyond. Distraction by mobile phone use, speeding and drink driving are the top three dangerous behaviours.

Tell your friends to turn the phone off, slow down and don’t drive if they’ve had a few drinks. Their lives could depend on it.

16 The Wheel Autumn 2017 We’re Gearing Up At Linfox

We are gearing up for an intense rounds of negotiations with the majors and I will be playing a lead role in the Linfox bargaining alongside our State Secretary Tim Dawson. Their existing agreement doesn’t expire until the end of the year but we are off to an early start We are taking things seriously and have held two delegates training days on the 1st of March where we rolled out the Log of Claims survey. Meetings have started at each site and will continue over the Linfox delegates have met to discuss a new Enterprise Agreement coming weeks and months.

The Bevchain troops are already starting behind the eight ball as last Ready for year their discount beer chits were ripped off them. This effectively reduced their weekly wage by over $20. Tough Fight Our members will be looking at seeking at least pay parity with their Linfox counterparts. Grace Removals also expires 30 June 2017 and the first negotiation meeting was held prior to Christmas. We had a break due to the regular industry busy season but we will be back at the bargaining table soon. Grace have made it clear that this will be a tough round of negotiations. Cost cutting began last year with four redundancies and four employees having their wages reduced. However, the Grace Removals workforce has always been up for the fight and I don’t expect that to change this year.
