The fifth Crystal Palace festival was a roaring summer success, with specialist food markets, live music and a talent show that unearthed some very special performers. The library opened in 1900, so next year we’re celebrating 110 years.”

That independence is a mixed blessing. There is greater flexibility and more autonomy – but there isn’t the safety net which other local authorities effectively guarantee.

On the other hand, all staff have direct contact with the users, so there is a real sense of a “family” serving a community.

“We have readers from five boroughs,” boasted Bradley, whose library underwent a £1m refurbishment in 2004.

There are rooms for community hire, a thriving youth library, a swanky automated book-return system, huge CD and DVD rental areas and, of course, books galore.

With more than 60,000 items to rent, spread over three floors, it would take an exceptionally picky user to leave empty-handed.

There are also public loos, and one of the largest reserve stocks of books in any local library in the land – so it’s always worth asking the staff if you can’t immediately find what you need.

The idea is to combine the rich range of restaurants in Crystal Palace’s Triangle – a foodie paradise in any event – with business networking. The first event was held last week as part of the Croydon Food Festival, but organiser Vinod Bhandari of the Croydon Food Group is certain there will be more. Last week’s event saw a group of business networkers have Spanish starters at Los Toreros in Westow Street, before shuffling down to A Torre, the Portuguese restaurant, for main courses, and then next door to Mediterranea for desserts and coffee. “It’s an introduction to the restaurants, and a business networking opportunity organised through the Croydon Economic Development Company and the Croydon Food Group,” explained Vinod. “It will help put Crystal Palace’s restaurants on a wider London map.” District centre manager Amber Rusk believes the food safari is an idea that could really take off. “It’s a way of encouraging more people to eat in Crystal Palace, and of encouraging The bric-a-brac stalls outside Bambino in Church Road, Crystal Palace, were packed all the food people to come together,” she said. with shoppers during the recent festival.
