Church of the Sacred Heart

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Together we foster a welcoming spirit of unity while honoring our diversity which leads to a graced harmony among us since Christ is the center of all we are and do.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ June 27, 2021 The author of The Cloud of Unknowing prays, “That which I am and the way that I am, with all my gifts of nature and grace, you have given to me, O Lord, and you are all this. I offer it all to you, principally to praise you and to help my fellow Christians and myself.” Knowing that God sustains us in being is the key to faith. All that we need to do is to love God as God is and the rest will begin to fall into place. God made us in His image and desires that we have life. God also desires that we be healed of all of our wounds, especially those caused by sin, and know his loving touch. Being weighed down by negativity, imperfections, the cares of the world, and weakness is not something that God desires. Faith can profoundly change how we see God, ourselves, and one another. It gives a clearer lens through which to see life and connects us with the powerful virtues of love and hope. Three friends journeying with us through all that we encounter, faith, hope, and love, help us experience God’s embrace and heal us. All we have to do is let God be who God is and not foolishly try to make Him into what we need or want Him to be. Without God we cease to be. It’s that simple. The very blood that flows through my veins and the life that I have come directly from Divine origins. With this knowledge of who God is and who I am, I can open my ears and hear the powerful words Jesus speaks, “Do not be afraid, just have faith.” Trust begins. When we are struggling, we naturally reach out for God because we know that a divine remedy is the only remedy. But, in doing so we wrestle with letting God take charge. We want something more miraculous and visible than the obvious and have difficulty in finding consolation simply resting in God’s presence. Our naked being, stripped of any pretense or selfserving agenda, is being called to rest in and love the uncreated Presence of God. Reach out in love to God. Ask God to heal you from all that separates you from Him. Put aside any ideas of God that create barriers between you and God’s tender and endearing presence. The Cloud of Unknowing leaves us with wisdom, “think of yourself and of him in the same way, that is, with the simple awareness that he is as he is and that you are as you are.” This is a meeting of two friends who desire nothing more than to share life together. ©LPi

Most priests would back me up when I say that things haven’t changed much since Jesus’ time. Today two people come to Jesus for healing: a father comes for his daughter, and a woman for herself. In the case of the father, coming for his ill daughter, the same thing happens today with the anointing of the sick. We get called to homes, hospitals, nursing homes, care facilities and what do we find? Often someone who is close to death’s door, who is unresponsive and apparently uncomprehending. And we ask a few questions: How long has she or he been here, how long have they been unresponsive and the answers sometimes are “Three weeks”; “He was OK last week.” And we have to bite our tongues from asking: Then why didn’t you call us then? When they were awake and somewhat alert and could participate in the sacrament, and benefit from hearing the prayers said over them. But we don’t. We think people do this is for a couple of reasons: 1) Denial that their loved ones are that seriously ill – convincing themselves that they’ll get better; 2) Fear – that if you give them LAST RITES they’ll perish immediately; 3) and because after the Vatican Council when Last Rites was returned to its original intention: Anointing of the Sick, the idea of anointing the sick, not necessarily only the dying, had been slow to take hold. Many still think of it as Last Rites, so they wait, as the father waited in today’s Gospel. Sometimes, after the anointing people do recover, if only for a little while, sometimes it is literally their Last Rites. Scripture does say “Are there people sick among you”, not dying, sick. The woman in today’s Gospel did it right: she’d been ill for a long time, tried every medical option and when she heard about Him, went to Jesus to be healed. BEFORE she got so bad she was a death’s door, or out of it. When she could realize the benefits and she did recover. We want people to be alert for obvious reasons. When we had the final exam in the course on Anointing of the Sick, one of the questions we were asked was – “why is it that sometimes the anointing brings healing?” Well, the obvious answer was it was God’s will, but my other answer was that the sick person was distracted and concerned and tense, as you would expect. When you can get them to calm down, and relax, then the body can function as it is supposed to and healing may happen. If the person is unconscious, that can’t happen. So the lesson today is: Go to Jesus sooner rather than later when there is a serious illness. The Anointing of the Sick "is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time . . .to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. If a sick person who received this anointing recovers his health, he can in the case of another grave illness receive this sacrament again. If during the same illness the person's condition becomes more serious, the sacrament may be repeated. It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced.” So it’s not for a cold or a hangnail, but for serious illness or advanced age – and that includes not just physical illness, mental issues as well. And BTW I’ll let YOU decide what advance age is. So don’t be the father character in today’s reading and waits until nearly the end, but the older woman character – in other words to use modern jargon, be proactive not reactive so that you can praise the Lord.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ June 27, 2021 Page 5

Good Sunday to you all!

In today’s gospel, St. Mark tells us “He gave strict orders that no one should know this.” This is a common theme in St. Mark: Jesus performs a miracle and then says; “Don’t tell anybody.” It’s known as the Messianic Secret. One explanation given is: “it was not yet the proper time for him to be revealed as such. He knew when he had to go to the court and then be crucified. Jesus' messianic mission cannot be understood apart from the cross, which the disciples did not yet understand. This theological explanation is supported by Matthew's explicit link between Pharisaic conspiracy to "destroy" Jesus and the latter's command to his followers "not to make him known." Aware of the plot against him, Jesus "withdrew from there" and continued his healing ministry. Matthew goes one step ahead and claims that Jesus' conscious decision to fulfil his ministry by avoiding untimely conflict was a fulfilment of Isaiah's prophecy”. Jesus wants to make sure that the people are ready to accept him as Messiah and understand what he is teaching, and they aren’t there yet. To spread it abroad would lead to misunderstanding and even more troubles with the authorities. So, he tells them to wait.

I want to take a moment to thank you all again for your continuing support of the parish, even when things were difficult. COVID is not yet over by a long shot, but we have weathered the storm much better than some of our sister parishes in the Diocese. And that is due to several things: your continued prayers and practical support, the staff being willing to sacrifice, and our willingness to explore new and different ways to celebrate our faith (car Masses!). So, I thank you. I was very concerned at the beginning of this mishigaas – Yiddish word – about how this would all end up. I’m glad to see that my concerns were unfounded.

Now on to practical matters: First, our numbers are still down about 25% from pre-COVID. Why not try to encourage people to return to the Sunday Mass? Second, Extraordinary Ministers of Communion MUST wear a mask while distributing Communion. We had a Mass last weekend where they did not. This is Diocesan directive, not a parish rule. Also, Lectors and EMS must report in before Mass starts in the sacristy. We need to know who is here and sometimes, as with the mask requirement, we need to update them. Third, Father Tito’s farewell celebration will be after the 11:30 Mass on Sunday, August 29th in the gym. As part of the celebration, we want to put together a souvenir book for him. It will give everyone a chance to express their good wishes and prayers for him. Next weekend we’ll have a form in the bulletin for ad requests. Speaking of forms, the Christmas bazaar this year will be open to crafters and there is a reservation form in the bulletin this weekend. I also want to add some live music, so if you know of a singing group or band, have them give me a call.

Summer is upon us – take time for yourself and reflect on how different life in general is, and how your life is different than a year ago. And give thanks to God for the graces he sent to see you through it.

I pray you have a safe and happy week. . . Father Chuck

Touching the Cloak of Christ Look to today’s Gospel and you’ll find one of the most arresting images in all of Scripture. Christ in a crowd, everyone clamoring for his attention, pressing against him. Several feet away, is a chronically ill woman, weak and desperate for help. She knows she doesn’t have a chance of getting his attention. She has no connections. She has no strength. All she can do is lift up her hand. So that’s what she does. She reaches out. There comes a time, or maybe several times, in each of our lives when we become this woman. We’re tired and we’re sick. Is it with sin? With fear? With anger? It doesn’t matter. Whatever it is, it’s made us weak, and we feel like we’ve run out of options. We’ve looked for help and come up empty. We’ve consulted friends and gotten nowhere. We’re lost in the crowd of life, unable to stick our heads above the pressing throng to wave for help. And there is Christ, always passing by us. The hem of his cloak is never far from our grasp. We have no hope of a big miracle like the synagogue leader. We don’t even bother asking for that. But that cloak ... we can touch that cloak. That’s something we can do. Do we do it, though? Do we have the confidence of that sick, beaten-down woman who knew so totally that healing was there for the taking? Or do we retreat back into the crowd, stumbling back home with our pain and our sinfulness? Reach out, friends. However, whatever, whenever — reach out. Christ will not fail you. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi Page 6 Sacred Heart Church ~ Riverton, New Jersey 3;F:HE 73D A?7>AE7D Keep in mind that through our Baptism we have been sealed with the mark of faith and we no longer belong to this world but we belong to Jesus Christ. We have been ransomed by Him.

Many years ago, I would hear people pray for a happy death. I am still not sure if I have a full understanding of this but it is a prayerful way of reminding us that we need God and His mercy. Included in daily prayer may be a request asking the Lord to give us the opportunity at the hour of our death to repent from our sins in full consciousness and to be escorted by St. Joseph and the Blessed Mother into the Lord’s presence. “Encounter” by Daniel Cariola Mural in chapel in Magdala, Israel As we say a prayer for a Happy Death, let it not be a Last week our gospel proclaimed the Lord having prayer of fear. But instead a proclamation of our authority over the wind and the sea. As we come authority over sickness and death in today’s gospel closer, He will reveal Himself to us too. reading. Fran Stinsman Jesus speaks to both the woman with the hemorrhage and to Jairus and instructs them to have faith. He compliments the woman instead of chastising her. In Jewish law she would have made Jesus unclean but instead He made her clean. “Your faith has saved you.” She was determined, she believed if ever she came close to the Lord by just touching his clothing, she would be healed. The Lord is Love and whenever we come close to Him, in all our “uncleanness”, the power of that love will go out from Bereavement Ministry of Sacred Heart Him to us, just as it did with the woman in today’s gospel. This past year we may have taken on the fear of the secular world instead of walking in faith. Surely we need to use wisdom, but we also have to be on guard not to take on the fears of those who do not believe.

All things, life itself are held in the hands of our Lord and Savior. Through His death and Resurrection, He We are here for you teaches us not to fear death but through faith in Him to daily move toward Eternal Life. Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ June 27, 2021 Page 7
