Brewers, Distillers & Food/Drink Manufacturers

French drinks giant Rémy Cointreau has agreed to buy Islay-based whisky maker Bruichladdich for £58m in what is believed to be the highest price ever paid for a distillery. Under the deal, Paris-listed Rémy is paying the distiller’s 60 investors a total of £48m for their shares and taking on Bruichladdich’s £10m debt. The pay-out is considerably higher than the €43m (£34m) price tag analysts had predicted when the deal was first mooted earlier this month. (The Scotsman, 23/7/12)

Heineken has launched a £2.6bn counter-strike for the maker of Tiger beer (Asia Pacific Breweries) in a move that would see the European brewer grab a greater slice of the fast-growing Asian market, though analysts said it was likely to face a fight. The bid followed a surprise £1.9bn bid earlier this week by a Thai millionaire. There was also speculation yesterday that Japanese brewer Kirin may make a move in what one analyst called a “three-way” tussle for the Singapore beer company. (The Scotsman, 21/7/12)

Inver House Distillers has reported a 28% rise in turnover helped by soaring international sales of whisky. The Airdrie-based company operates five distilleries – Pulteney, Balblair, Knockdhu, Speyburn and Balmenach – plus a bottling and warehousing site. It produces top malt whiskies and a Scottish gin called Caorunn as well as vodka and liqueurs. Managing director Graham Stevenson said: “It has been growth pretty much across the portfolio although Old Pulteney is doing particularly well.” (The Herald, 10/7/12)

Shocked workers at one of Scotland’s best-known companies were dealt a catastrophic blow last night as it emerged the business is facing closure with the loss of 1700 jobs. Staff at Hall’s of Broxburn, in West Lothian were reeling after the bombshell announcement by Dutch owner Vion Foods, which said the factory is losing almost £80,000 a day. Stewart Forrest, USDAW’s deputy Scottish divisional officer, whose union is part of the task force, said: “A 90-day consultation period will start, but the very first question we want answered is why the company has waited until this 11th hour before engaging with its employees and their union.” (The Herald, 6/7/12)

Spirits giant Edrington is planning a multimillion-pound investment in Scotland over the next five years after racking up 57% profits growth and 25% debt reduction since 2008. The spend is likely to focus on star brand The Macallan, with new stills and warehousing on Speyside to anticipate future demand, as well as investment in its operations in Glasgow which support 450 jobs. The group employs 750 in Scotland and more than 1500 overseas. (The Herald, 4/7/12)

Energy, Oil & Gas

A windfarm 10 miles off the coast of Fife, capable of powering every home in Edinburgh, will be the subject of a formal planning application today. The £1.4bn project will involve between 64 and 125 turbines standing in 150ft of water and known as Neart na Gaoithe, Gaelic for ‘power of the wind’. Irish company Mainstream Renewable Power says the windfarm will generate 450MW of electricity, enough to power 325,000 homes, the equivalent of a city the size of Edinburgh or 3.7% of Scottish demand, when it becomes fully operational by the end of 2016. The company predicts it will create hundreds of jobs directly and indirectly over the 25-year life of the windfarm. (The Herald, 30/7/12) 3

The Scottish Government must keep the pressure on the UK Government to ensure Scotland’s renewables potential is not jeopardised by the Westminster energy plans, WWF Scotland has warned. In a week that saw the First Minister Alex Salmond criticise Westminster for delaying an announcement on renewable subsidies, the environmental group said Scotland and the UK’s targets could be knocked off course by action in London. It follows the publication of a highly critical report by the influential House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee on the UK Government’s draft Energy Bill. The report makes it clear the UK’s proposals could halt progress in creating a low- carbon future. (TFE, 30/7/12)

Scotish-Hydro owner SSE yesterday revealed that it has put plans for four small-scale hydro-electric schemes “on hold” as it awaits the Scottish Government’s decision over subsidies. The Perth-based utilities company said the decision would affect its 7.5MW hydro project at Kildermorie estate, near Alness in Ross-shire, the only one of the schemes to have already been placed in the planning system. Other projects on hold include a scheme on the River Isla near Alyth, in Perthshire. (The Scotsman, 28/7/12)

ScottishPower owner Iberdrola has reported a 15.2% increase in first half earnings to €1.4bn despite poor performance in Spain. Net profit from international operations for the Madrid energy company were up 74% at €1.36bn in the period although the Spanish arm declined 44%. (The Herald, 26/7/12)

ScottishPower has unveiled plans for a new £80m headquarters in Glasgow city centre, and is offloading its Cathcart base. Around 200 staff are based at the site and they will either relocate to the new 14-storey office on the corner of St Vincent Street and India Street, or to offices at Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. Construction will start in 2013 and the building is due to be completed by late 2015. (The Herald, 20/7/12)

Engineering & Manufacturing

Engineering giant ABB is planning to create around 120 jobs in Scotland as part of its growth strategy. In Aberdeen, it will add about 100 sales and engineering posts by the end of the year, which is a 50% increase on the current workforce in the north-east. Its East Kilbride project management office is also slated to treble in size, from 10 people to 30. (The Herald, 2/7/12)

Financial Services

Santander, the eurozone’s biggest lender, yesterday vowed to press ahead with plans to list its Mexican unit – but warned that the listing of its UK business would remain “on hold” for the time being. But Stephen Jones, Santander UK finance director, said he still expects the UK arm to spin-off from its parent and float in London next year or in 2014. (The Scotsman, 27/12/12)

Scottish Friendly is hoping to receive £7m in the next year after a deal with BGL Group that will see Scotland’s largest mutual underwrite life insurance cover for its new online product. BGL’s Beagle Street is offering life insurance and critical illness cover. (The Herald, 27/7/12)

Edinburgh merchant bank Quayle Munro is to cut ties with Scotland after unveiling plans to retrench in its London office to focus on corporate advisory work. A core team will lead a management buyout

of the bank’s Scottish project advisory business, while executive director Rob Cormie has left to launch his own company. (The Scotsman, 27/7/12)

Stockbroker N+1 Brewin, which broke away from the wealth manager Brewin Dolphin earlier this year, is to merge with rival Singer Capital Markets. The firm, which has offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow, said the deal with Singer will create a business with an “extremely strong UK client base”, employing more than 110 and offering corporate advisory and equity research services. The merged entity will be called N+1 Singer. (The Scotsman, 25/7/12)

Deutsche Bank is thought to be planning 1,000 job cuts at its investment banking division as market activity dries up in the face of the Eurozone debt crisis. The job losses, which are expected to fall mainly outside Germany, would come in addition to cost-cutting announced in October when the bank said it would axe about 500 positions in corporate banking and securities. (The Scotsman, 20/7/12)

The future of internet banking Intelligent Finance (IF) has again been placed in doubt after the brand was dropped from a deal with the Co-operative. It is understood Lloyds may be forced to run the IF business down to appease European Union rules on state aid in a move that would mark the end of the 12-year-old brand. (The Scotsman, 20/7/12)

The Co-operative Bank is to expand its brand of ethical trading throughout Scotland, after a £750m deal to buy out hundreds of Lloyds branches. In a move seen as a boost for consumers, it will buy out 632 Lloyds TSB branches – including all 185 north of the Border – in the “biggest shake-up in high street banking for a generation”. The deal – yet to be approved in full by regulators – will see the branches involved rebranded to TSB from summer 2013, before customers are transferred to the Co- op the following November. (The Herald, 20/7/12)

John Rendall, chief executive of banking HSBC’s operations in Scotland, is moving to take up the equivalent post in Poland, it emerged yesterday. Doug Baikie, who has been with HSBC since 1999 and has led the bank’s Scottish corporate banking division for the past two years, is taking over in an interim role. In the past year, HSBC in Scotland has reported growth of 39% in the number of “premier” personal customer accounts and a 38% increase in small business lending balances. (The Scotsman, 17/7/12)

Competition to attract mortgage customers has been stepped up, as a lender launched a five-year fixed-rate deal with a record low rate. The move from HSBC follows a string of lenders announcing increases to their mortgage rates amid the economic uncertainty. Comparison website Moneyfacts said HSBC’s new five year fixed-rate of 2.99% is the lowest it has ever recorded for this type of mortgage. Borrowers will need a sizeable 40% deposit or equity to take out the deal. (The Herald, 13/7/12)

Clydesdale Bank has confirmed that 145 posts will be axed in Scotland under the first tranche of the 1,400 jobs losses announced in April. The trade union Unite said that 85 posts would go at “financial solutions centres” in the east of Scotland, with a further 760 roles going in the west. (The Scotsman, 12/7/12)

Scoban, the planned new private lender for the UK, revealed yesterday that it is nearer to lift-off for the project following a successful initial fundraising and the appointment of an investment bank. Scoban said it had received offers to subscribe for more than £5m of shares. Chairman of the new bank, Ray Entwhistle, said that after completion of the offer, Scoban’s shareholder base is expected to increase to over 170 individuals. (The Scotsman, 6/7/12)

Alliance Trust has cut jobs at its 30-strong investment team with immediate effect, it emerged yesterday. The Dundee-based firm declined to say how many posts would be affected but noted that “a small number of other investment roles have been made transitional, with individuals able to apply for roles in the new structure”. Katherine Garrett-Cox, chief executive, said the moves would create “a more focused and efficient investment structure”. (The Scotsman, 6/7/12)

Aberdeen Asset Management (AAA) is opening an office in New York this month as it steps up a push to expand its US client base alongside a drive into the UK retail market. The business development office will employ 20 and complement the firm’s US headquarters in Philadelphia which employs around 200. AAA has also recently hired development managers in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Texas and Chicago and is looking to make further hires across the continent in the coming months. (The Herald, 4/7/12)

HSBC has created 14 jobs opening a new £1.2m branch in Dumfries. It is the fifth branch to open in Scotland since the bank outlined expansion plans in March 2010. (The Herald, 3/7/12)

Global investment manager BlackRock is taking space in one of Edinburgh’s newest office blocks in what is the biggest city centre letting of a speculative development for almost a decade. The US firm will occupy part of the first floor and three other entire floors of Exchange Place 1, owned by Scottish Widows Investment Partnership, in Fountainbridge. BlackRock will double its existing 40,000 sq. ft. of floorspace in nearby Torphichen Street, providing it with enough room to expand its operations. Nigel Bolton, head of BlackRock in Scotland and head of European equities, said it represented a long-term commitment to Edinburgh. Exchange Place, is home to a number of blue-chip firms including Hymans Robertson, Wood Mackenzie and Scott-Moncrieff. (Scotland on Sunday, 1/7/12)

Law

Law firm Pinsent Masons has opened an office in Germany, its first in mainland Europe, just weeks after acquiring Scottish practice McGrigors. Seven partners specialising in complex transactions, corporate law and dispute resolution will be based in Munich. Pinsent Masons has had an international presence for more than 30 years since launching in China. Offices have been opened in Singapore in 2007, Dubai in 2008 and Qatar in 2011. (Scotland on Sunday, 15/7/12)

The head of HBJ Gateley’s Glasgow office is predicting further contract and client wins in the coming months, following an improved performance in the first half of the year. Alison Newton said the law firm’s “tails were up” after securing clients such as property developers Terrace Hill and Grainger alongside a rise in the fee income being booked. She attributed the wins to the sector knowledge and market connections in the practice. Ms Newton said: We will definitely grow in Glasgow.” (The Herald, 10/7/12)

International law firm Pinsent Masons, which took over Scottish peer McGrigors in May, yesterday posted a rise in turnover despite “difficult” market conditions. Revenues rose by 4% to £221m in the year to 30 April, but the firm claimed the total would have hit £295m if McGrigors’ final months as an

6

independent firm were taken into account. The combined firm employs more than 2,500 staff, including 1,500 lawyers and some 350 partners. (The Scotsman, 7/7/12)

Retail

Eastern Holdings, one of Scotland’s biggest car dealerships, selling luxury marques such as Lexus and Mercedes, has seen full-year sales drive through the £200m mark after taking on further franchises. Newly filed accounts also show that the Edinburgh-based company increased its headcount by almost 70 to 916 staff. It follows a string of franchises that were taken on in late 2010, including Lexus in Glasgow and Honda and Mazda in Edinburgh. (The Scotsman, 11/7/12)

Ambitious jewellery firm Rox is spending £1m on its first store in the Scottish capital in a move which will create 12 jobs. The company, which has three outlets in Glasgow and one in Aberdeen, has taken over a 2500 sq ft retail space in the recently revamped Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh. Work is scheduled to begin in September with the shop open for business by the end of October and ahead of the crucial Christmas shopping season. (The Herald, 10/7/12)

Transport

Sunday train services between Glasgow and Edinburgh will double in frequency from September as ScotRail extends its half-hourly service on the busy route. An additional 12 trains a day will be laid on from 9 September, the highest frequency on a Sunday in the 170-year-old history of the main line via Falkirk. (The Herald, 24/7/12)

Direct Edinburgh-Istanbul link 'will be first of many'. Edinburgh Airport’s new owner has committed itself to creating more direct links with global destinations after welcoming the inaugural flight from the capital to Istanbul. Global Infrastructure Partners bought the airport for £807m from BAA last month and said securing more direct routes was vital for the wider economy. The Turkish Airlines service will run four times a week and the carrier’s chief executive, Temel Kotil, said he was confident it could soon start providing daily flights to Istanbul, which offers onward links to China, Japan, Singapore and South Africa. (The Scotsman, 17/7/12)

Glasgow Airport was operator BAA’s star performer in June, posting the fastest growth in passengers in its five sites (Heathrow, Stansted, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton). A total of 734,000 travellers passed through the airport during the month, up 4.5% year-on-year. Aberdeen airport saw a 1.3% increase year-on-year, with just under 292,000 passengers flying from its terminal despite weather disruptions. (The Scotsman, 12/7/12)

Tens of thousands of unemployed young people will benefit from discounted bus fares under an industry-backed scheme designed to help them find work. The UK’s five major bus companies, including Scottish-based Stagecoach and FirstGroup, have agreed to subsidise fares for people aged between 16 and 24 who are not in employment, training or education. Though details of the scheme are yet to be ironed out – including exactly how far ticket prices will be cut – it is expected to come into effect from September. Discussions are on-going with a number of smaller operators to secure their involvement, ensuring that it has a comprehensive reach across the UK. (The Herald, 4/7/12)

PHILANTHROPY

Europe’s biggest-ever lottery winners have contributed £130,000 to the construction of a community arts centre. The money given by Chris and Colin Weir will be used to equip the kitchen and café areas in the Beacon Arts Centre, Greenock, a £10m theatre complex being built at a former dockyard. The Beacon will have a 500-seat main auditorium together with a 130-seat studio theatre and three large rehearsal rooms. (Sunday Post, 29/7/12)

Cancer Research UK has been handed a donation of £10m, the charity said yesterday – the biggest one-off amount it had ever received. The donor, who wants to remain anonymous, has also handed £10m to the University of Southampton. (The Scotsman, 19/7/12)

A bowl that once belonged to both the Dukes of Hamilton and the leading financier Edmund de Rothschild has been given to the National Museums of Scotland (NMS) and is now the collection’s single “most valuable object”. The Byzantine sardonyx bowl, mounted on a 16th century gold stand, has been given to NMS under the acceptance in lieu scheme, which allows donors to leave major works of art to the nation in lieu of paying inheritance tax. It was one of six items from the Hamilton Palace collection sold to Alfred de Rothschild in 1882 and it was part of the estate of the late Edmund de Rothschild, who oversaw the investment bank NM Rothschild & Sons in the 1970s and died in 2009, aged 93. The amount of tax it was accepted in lieu of was £2.1m although that is not necessarily the actual value of the object. (The Herald, 18/7/12)

Hundreds of the UK’s poorest and brightest teenagers are to be given scholarships to attend Oxford University after the institution was handed a £75m donation by a former student. The university was gifted the funds by businessman and ex-journalist Michael Moritz and his novelist wife Harriet Heyman. The money is to be used to kick-start a new £300m scholarship programme. It comes as tuition fees in England are tripled to a maximum of £9,000 per year. Students receiving the new scholarships will have no study or living costs, receive financial support during the holidays and take part in a tailor-made internship programme. In total, the package will be worth around £11,000 a year. The University said the £75m donation was the “biggest philanthropic gift for undergraduate financial support in European history”. (The Scotsman, 12/7/12)

Roger Federer’s win over Andy Murray has netted more than £100,000 for the charity Oxfam. Nick Newlife, from Oxford, placed £1520 on odds of 66/1 with bookmaker William Hill. He died in 2009, aged 59, leaving his entire estate – including the bet – to Oxfam, which will now collect £101,840. The bookmaker has already paid out £16,750 to Oxfam from another bet placed by Mr Newlife, which wagered £250 at 66/1 that Federer would win 14 Grand Slams events. (The Herald, 19/7/12)

One of Scotland’s leading architects has been appointed to head a multi-million-pound transformation of one of the jewels in the crown of Edinburgh’s cultural landscape. Malcolm Fraser has been charged with masterminding a study into how to modernise the Scottish National Gallery, which holds many of the nation’s premier artworks. Eight years after completing a lengthy project to create an underground link between the Royal Scottish Academy and Scottish National Gallery buildings on The Mound, officials have set their sights on overhauling ageing gallery spaces. The key aim will be to transform the basement area in which the Scottish Collection is currently housed. Critics claim that while the upper floors contain masterpieces by world-famous artists such as Raphael, El Greco, Velázquez, Rubens, Van Gogh, Monet, Degas and Gauguin, the works of some of Scotland’s finest painters have been neglected. If the revamp goes ahead, it will follow the highly successful overhauls of the National Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. (Scotland on Sunday, 1/7/12)
