  • Experiencing the Glory Days of Vinyl
Experiencing the Glory Days of Vinyl Editor’s note: Record Store/Vinyl Appreciation Day is April 22, 2017. For participating stores in RI: http://www.recordstoreday.com/Stores?state=RI – there is also more info below this article. There was a point in time when listening to your favorite album was an actual experience rather than just an accompaniment for your car ride or wallpaper behind a study session in your college dorm. This unique type of experience required you to sit down by a record player, maybe put on some headphones for maximum musical teleportation, and give your undivided attention as you entered an imagined world of musical exploration. A key component of this (possibly literal) “trip” was something now considered an ancient artifact of years past: liner notes. Whether you were following along word for word with the lyrics to each song or browsing acknowledgments during the solos, there was often much more to discover than just the music flowing through your speaker cables. In fact, much of my arguably useless but extensive knowledge of music trivia is attributed to studying the producers, engineers, musicians and songwriters on each – I started to say “track,” but that’s a CD thing with place in this article – “cut,” I believe is the correct word. Before social media became a magnifying glass into every celebrity’s life, there was this added element of mystery. The album artwork and inside sleeve were sometimes the only way we could get a glimpse into the studio sessions, who worked on the album, and in some instances what the band actually looked like! Sure there was the occasional magazine poster/article from popular music magazines such as Creem, Rolling Stone, Billboard and Circus, but you also had to go to a physical store and purchase them.

  • Tribute to the Cars to Appear at Hht
PRESS RELEASE – September 17, 2018 Susan Carrier (951) 551-5363 [email protected] TRIBUTE TO THE CARS TO APPEAR AT HHT On Saturday October 6th, the Historic Hemet Theatre will host a tribute to The Cars, a band that pioneered synthesizer pop music in the late 70's and early 80's. Performing the tribute will be Heartbeat City, a band that has recreated the look and sound of the Cars, dressing in the 80's style of the band and perfecting a sound that is amazingly close to the real thing! Although less well known than other classic bands, The Cars were quite successful in their day, including being named "Best New Artist" by Rolling Stone in 1978 and "Video of the Year" for "You Might Think" at the very first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984. Their debut album, The Cars, sold six million copies and appeared on the Billboard 200 album chart for 139 weeks. Robert Palmer, music critic for Rolling Stone, described the Cars' musical style by saying: "they have taken some important but disparate contemporary trends—punk minimalism, the labyrinthine synthesizer and guitar textures of art rock, the '50s rockabilly revival and the melodious terseness of power pop—and mixed them into a personal and appealing blend." The Cars most memorable hits include "My Best Friend's Girl," "Just What I Needed," "Who's Gonna Drive You Home Tonight?," and "Good Times Roll." The members of Heartbeat City are Phil Rowland (drums), Jamie Rio (lead vocals, guitar), Don E Sachs (Lead guitar, vocals), Andy Catt (bass, lead vocals), Mark Adame (keyboard, vocals).

  • Jacknife Lee
Jacknife Lee It is fair to say that Jacknife Lee has become one of the most sought after and highly influential producers currently at work. Lee’s career has encompassed work with some of the biggest and most influential artists on both sides of the Atlantic in the shape of Taylor Swift, U2, R.E.M., Kasabian, Robbie Williams and Neil Diamond. His work on U2’s “How To Dismantle An Atom Bomb” saw him collect two Grammy Awards in 2006 as well as Producer of the Year at the UK MMF Awards. He was also again Grammy nominated in 2013 for his work on Swift’s multi-million selling album “Red.” Currently working on what looks set to be the biggest album from Scottish alt-rock heroes Twin Atlantic and the debut album from The Gossip’s Beth Ditto, Lee has also produced a handful of tracks on Jake Bugg’s upcoming third album and is just about to commence work with Two Door Cinema Club after their successful collaboration on Beacon two years previously. In 2014, Lee was honoured to be asked to co-produce Neil Diamond’s “Melody Road” album alongside the tremendously talented Don Was. “Melody Road” debuted at #3 in America and #4 in the UK as it received universal critical acclaim. Lee has gained much recognition as a writer producer over the last five years. In 2014 also Lee co write and produced various singles for Kodaline’s second album “Coming Up For Air” which peaked at #2, while he also produced and co-wrote Twin Atlantic’s Radio 1 A-listed singles “Heart and Soul” and “Brothers and Sisters.” In addition, Lee spent some of the year writing and producing track for alternative urban artist Raury.

  • What's Wrong About the Elective Share
What’s Wrong About the Elective Share “Right”? Naomi Cahn* This Article examines one form of property rights available to a surviving spouse, the elective share. The elective share serves as an override to a testator’s stated intent by allowing the surviving spouse to choose to take a portion of the decedent’s estate — even if the will explicitly disinherits the surviving spouse. The Article analyzes a recent five-year period of state cases raising elective share issues with the goal of determining the circumstances under which an elective share is most likely to be contested. The reported elective share disputes typically involve a subsequent spouse challenging a will that leaves property to an earlier family. The petitioners are almost invariably women. The length of the marriage ranges from a few months to decades, and some of the cases involve waiver of the share, some involve estranged spouses, and a few involve marriage fraud. Disputes over the elective share illustrate family tensions, rarely involving parents against joint children, and more frequently pitting a surviving spouse against the decedent’s earlier families. The Article provides an empirical assessment of the current rationales for the elective share and suggests revisions to existing elective share approaches that reflect both differing theories of what values marriage should represent and the changing demography of marriage and remarriage. * Copyright © 2020 Naomi Cahn.
