She has always taken my claims about the importance of medical women’s politics seriously, and graciously opened up both her home and her archives to me. He has an amazing ability to make graduate students feel confident about their work, while simultaneously encouraging them to think beyond their own intellectual boundaries. My first exposure to thinking like a historian came in my undergraduate years at Mesa State College, under the careful and patient tutelage of Elizabeth Propes and Sarah Swedberg. At the University of Wyoming, Isadora Helfgott pushed me to seek out good stories and ask hard questions. Archivists and research librarians made traveling to many archives in many states pleasant and productive. At the University of Michigan, the archivists at the Bentley Historical Library were incredibly valuable in helping me trace the migration patterns of medical women graduates at the university. The staff at the Library of Congress were especially supportive in helping me locate materials on women physicians who were politically active in the American West. The archives at Smith College are a special place and the archivists who oversee the Sophia Smith v Collection are incredibly smart and friendly people. In Colorado, the librarians at the Stephen H. Hart Library and Research Center, the Denver Public Library, the University of Colorado, and the Colorado State Archives were kind, patient, and knowledgeable. In Oregon, I had the opportunity to work with the wonderful archivists at the Oregon Health and Science University and the Oregon State Historical Society.     From 1906 until 1916 I was a nurse at the Salomon Heine Hospital in Hamburg. (Salomon Heine was the uncle of Heinrich Heine who wrote a poem about this hospital.) The first time that Jewish nurses sat for examinations by the German authorities and received a German State Diploma was in 1913. One of my colleagues and I were the first Jewish nurses who received a State Diploma in Germany. We both passed the examinations with “very good”, and the German doctors especially praised our theoretical and practical knowledge. In 1916, during the first world war, I left the hospital and started out on my way to the then called Palestine. I arrived in the country in December of that year. The following events influenced my decision to come here. Dr. Wallach went on a trip to Europe when the hospital urgently needed a head nurse. He inspected several hospitals and, among them, the Salomon Heine Hospital in Hamburg, which impressed him especially because its structure was similar to that of his own hospital. Dr. Wallach turned to the head nurse to ask if she could spare a nurse who would be willing to serve as head nurse for him. Four nurses of the hospital had already been put at the disposal of the State. She thought that Schwester Selma might like to serve her war service in Palestine. Dr. Wallach came to this country at the end of the 19th century, a native 5 of Cologne. His coming was prompted by sheer idealism and also by his religious attitude.

    PRESIDENTIAL HANDWRITING FILE: PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS: 1981-1989 – REAGAN LIBRARY COLLECTIONS This collection is available in whole for research use. Some folders may still have withdrawn material due to Freedom of Information Act restrictions. Most frequent withdrawn material is national security classified material, personal privacy, protection of the President, etc. PRESIDENTIAL HANDWRITING FILE: PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS: 1981-1989 The Presidential Handwriting File is an artificial collection created by the White House Office of Records Management (WHORM). The Presidential Handwriting File consists of a variety of documents that Ronald Reagan either annotated, edited, or wrote in his own hand. When documents containing the president's handwriting were received at WHORM for filing, the original was placed in the Presidential Handwriting File and arranged by the order received. A photocopy of the document was placed in the appropriate category of the WHORM: Subject File. The first page of the casefile was stamped Handwriting File, indicating the location of the original documents. However, WHORM often failed to indicate on the original documents the original location (i.e. the six digit tracking number, Subject Category Code). The Presidential Handwriting File, as created by the White House, did not contain handwriting found in staff and office files. The Library will be creating a further series of handwriting material from staff and office files. In order to provide better access to the Presidential Handwriting File, the collection has been arranged into six series. Each series is arranged chronologically by the date of the document. Each document has been marked with the appropriate WHORM: Subject File category and a six digit tracking number.

Mr. Chairman and members of the committee; I wish to make only a brief statement personally regarding the public health provisions of title VIII, and its importance as a major factor in the development of a security program. Dr. Sydenstricker of the United States Public Health Service, under whose direction the staff of the Committee on Economic Security prepared the public health section of the Committee’s report and the recommendations contained in title VIII is here to testify, and will be able to give you more com- prehensively and effectively than I can, the part of this title in the general program. The Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service, Dr. H. S. Cumming, is also here to discuss this title and to answer such questions as you may desire to ask him regarding the Public Health Service. The title is short and very simple.     The Nation’s Matron: Hattie Jacques and British post-war popular culture Estella Tincknell Abstract: Hattie Jacques was a key figure in British post-war popular cinema and culture, condensing a range of contradictions around power, desire, femininity and class through her performances as a comedienne, primarily in the Carry On series of films between 1958 and 1973. Her recurrent casting as ‘Matron’ in five of the hospital-set films in the series has fixed Jacques within the British popular imagination as an archetypal figure. The contested discourses around nursing and the centrality of the NHS to British post-war politics, culture and identity, are explored here in relation to Jacques’s complex star meanings as a ‘fat woman’, ‘spinster’ and authority figure within British popular comedy broadly and the Carry On films specifically. The article argues that Jacques’s star meanings have contributed to nostalgia for a supposedly more equitable society symbolised by socialised medicine and the feminine authority of the matron. The volume under review is the second of a projected series of seven that will present to the public, under the title of The Papers of Henry Bouquet, the documentary record of the career in America of a Swiss soldier who, as a colonel in the British army, played a significant part in the history of Pennsylvania. The publication of the first volume of this series has been deferred in the hope that some letters that are now missing may eventually turn up. The present volume, dealing with General John Forbes' expedition against Fort Duquesne, covers the period from June 1 to December 31, 1758. Properly speaking, it is the second volume of the second edition of the Bouquet Papers, for the new series will be a revision and an improvement of a preliminary edition of these papers that was brought out, under the sponsorship of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, in nineteen mimeo- graphed volumes between 1940 and 1943. The second edition will differ from the first one in two important respects. In the mimeographed edition the papers were published in series without annotation; in the printed edition they will be arranged chronologically and will be fully annotated. In volume two of the printed edition the only devia- tion from the chronological arrangement was the placing of Bouquet's Orderly Book at the end of the volume.
