We are the ones working in social cooperatives to keep assistance alive for populations that were already vulnerable before the pandemic and are even more so after.” - Mauro Lusetti, President, Legacoop The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted life dramatically in Italy. On 25 March there were 74,386 confirmed cases with 7,503 deaths and 9,362 recoveries. The stringent measures adopted by the Italian Government, needed to slow down and contain the virus, have had seriously detrimental consequences for enterprises in the country. Regarding cooperative enterprises, if the emergency situation and the measures around the coronavirus pandemic continue for a longer period, it is expected that workers at risk could reach at least 265,000. Consolidation remains low and traditional grocery stores continue to represent the majority share of the outlets, followed by open-air markets. In fact, the sector is one of the most fragmented and least saturated in Western Europe with fewer large retailers and still many small local retail stores. Nonetheless, consolidation is slowly gaining momentum, with Italian and foreign operators starting to expand their network of stores, particularly in the south of the country. This report overviews the characteristics of the grocery retail sector and how best to place U.S. products in the Italian market. Post: Rome Author Defined: Section 1. The Italian Food Retail and Distribution Sector Overview Unlike other European nations, the Italian food retail and distribution sector continues to resist consolidation. Small, traditional grocery stores (so-called Mom and Pop stores) continue to represent the largest segment of the food retail sector, followed by open-air markets. Nonetheless, consolidation is slowly gaining momentum, as a few Italian and foreign operators are starting to expand their network of stores, particularly in the south of the country. Larger food retailers are starting to appeal to those consumers who are attracted by the convenience that one-stop shopping offers, and appreciate the wide range of products and additional services that larger retail formats provide. -

It is the result of two different surveys carried out among CICOPA’s members during the first half of 2014, which were eventually updated: each of these two surveys is at the origin of the following two sections which, together, are aimed at providing a picture of our cooperative sector in the world. As we will examine in the following pages, the close to 65,000 enterprises that are directly part of our world network as affiliates of CICOPA member organizations employ over 3 million people. However, according to material collected during our recent inter-sectoral study Cooperatives and Employment: a Global Report1, released at the International Summit of Cooperatives in Quebec in October 2014, there is evidence that this world phenomenon is quantitatively much wider: worker cooperatives, social cooperatives and cooperatives of self-employed producers in industry and services together employ over 16 million people worldwide. The vast majority of these persons are members and, therefore, the owners of their enterprise, which they jointly and democratically control. The cooperatives in our network are involved in a very wide array of industrial and service sectors, from mechanical industries to cultural centres, from schools to nano-technologies, from construction to health care. -

Endnotes Page 39 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY WORKER COOPERATIVES FOR NEW YORK CITY: A VISION FOR ADDRESSING POVERTY AND INEQUALITY The Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies (FPWA) presents this report, Worker Cooperatives for New York City: A Vision for Addressing Income Inequality, as an examination of one solution for the challenges facing New York’s workers: worker cooperative businesses. Indeed, the report’s key finding is that worker cooperatives can easily fit into a broad campaign to cope with poverty, long-term joblessness, the growing isolation of low-wage workers and unprecedented levels of income inequality. But it is clear that in order for this to take place, there must be a strong embrace of public policies and support for individuals, new businesses and human services organizations to carry this effort. And so FPWA calls on New York City’s public and private leadership to join together in supporting this promising option for improving the social and economic well-being of greater New York’s most vulnerable. -

Abstract In a world in which capitalist corporations produce vast negative externalities, the present paper discusses first the comparative advantages of cooperatives in humanizing the economy with their positive externalities. In the second part of the paper, the case of Emilia-Romagna, a flourishing region of Northern Italy where a large amount of cooperatives are active in many sectors, is analysed, with three aims: 1. offering a quantitative picture of the presence of cooperatives in the region; 2. showing how cooperatives contribute largely to the economic success of the region 3.
