The string of events and memorials began June 6th. Along with them in attendance were President Obama and the First Lady.

FFA Chapter, Students Rank In State, Nation The Judson High School FFA Chapter has been recognized as one of the top chapters in the entire state of Texas. It was honored with the Golden Horizon award…the highest state rank- ing that an FFA chapter can get. The Judson FFA also picked up the Golden Emblem rating which is presented to only the top 10 percent of FFA chapters in the state and carries a nation- al ranking as well. Both honors are based on how chapters employ the FFA mission and strate- gies, focusing on student, chapter and community development. The Judson FFA competes nationally in October. Opening in August 2016, it will be Judson ISD’s third comprehensive high school. It will take enrollment pressure off of Judson High School and serve the northern end of the district’s footprint which will likely see significant development in years to come. As you know I will be retiring at the end of this year as Superintendent of Judson ISD. I just want you to know what a pleasure it has been to work with this community and with these students to raise the standard of excellence as a team with such supportive parents. It’s my mission and my passion and I look forward to seeing great things in our students this year as we work together producing excellence.

Copperfield Elementary School, Judson ISD's newest school, is putting all the details in place right now. Much of the furniture is in the building, technology infra- structure is in the works and supplies such as books are coming in too. Much of the staff will be moving in over the next few days so they can get all the classrooms and facilities ready for students when they arrive August 25th. The Northeast Herald com- munity newspaper came out for a tour of the new school and conducted interviews with Operations Director, Daniel Kershner and Copperfield ES Principal, Gerrie Spellmann. In case you hadn't heard, input from the students going to the school determined that the mascot will be the Copperfield Bobcats! So congratulations to all you Bobcats out there! Enjoy the new school and new school year.

2 JUDSON ISD S TUDENTS SHINE JECA Student To Attend National Medical Congress

Hannah Hinojosa, JECA Senior, is Texas Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders

As big as the need for health and medical care is now, it will only get bigger in the coming years. So the profession is looking for good candidates that want to get into the field. But they have to be qualified and they have to possess the passion for the field. Judson Early College Academy student Hannah Hinojosa has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington D.C. in November. This prestigious group is chosen out of an honors-only program for high school students who want to become doctors or research scientists. The event is hoped to encourage and inspire students who have the grit to follow this career path. It’s about giving them support to stay the course and provide resources and a plan for them to reach their goal. Hannah was nominated by Dr. Con- nie Mariano, The Medical Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists, to repre- sent Texas. That nomination was based on her academic and leadership qualities along with her sense of determina- tion as she approaches the field of medicine.

Hannah will attend the three-day congress November 14-16 joining other students across the country to hear from Nobel Laureates, National Medal of Science winners as well as deans from Ivy League schools and top medical in- stitutions. It will be a great opportunity for Hannah and we congratulate her knowing she will represent Judson ISD well.

Wagner ROTC Cadets Had Full Plate During Summer

While summer is a good time to catch a breather from the routine, The Wagner High School ROTC program took a brief break and cranked it back up again. Cadets gathered at John Newcombe's Ranch in New Braunfels...otherwise known as Newks Ranch, for the Cadet Leadership Challenge. Nine schools were there participating with some coming from as far away as El Paso and Corpus Christi. The camp helped every cadet with developing skills and values such as communi- cation, encouragement and decision making. While challenging, it was a real growing experience for them. In fact, one Wagner Cadet re- ceived an individual trophy for leadership abilities and 8 other cadets were chosen as best marching platoon.

Toward the end of the summer, the Senior Leadership welcomed in- coming freshmen into the program showing them basic drill move- ments and leadership fundamentals. The whole group then went to Camp Bullis for the Leadership Reaction Course. This provided a prac- tical way of working on problem solving and working as a team. It all wrapped up with CiCi's Pizza and a massive water balloon activity that was refreshing.

It's also worth mentioning that the Wagner ROTC participated in the Make A Wish Foundation as they donated $1,000 toward the cause. WHEW!!! What a Summer!!

3 Rockets Experience Hunger at the Oxfam Hunger Banquet By Kiana Dunaway (Exclusive Student Content)

Imagine a room with about twenty people inside. Out of those twenty people, ten people, which is 50% of the people in the room, don’t get a sufficient amount to eat everyday. Seven people, which is 35% of the people in the room, almost get the recommended amount of food and water each day. And the remaining 15%, which is three people, get a sufficient amount of food and water each day. These percentages represent the reality of hunger around the world and even locally, here in San Anto- nio. These numbers are shocking and something should be done about it; if not for the people of the world, for the people here in . The Inter- national Baccalaureate (IB) students at Judson High School are doing something about the hunger prob- lem in San Antonio. They hosted their second annu- al Oxfam Hunger Banquet this March. The Oxfam Hunger Banquet is an interactive banquet, where people are separated into classes, representative of how hunger correlates to one’s socioeconomic status. As attendees entered the banquet hall, they randomly pulled cards that signi- fied their class. Fifty percent of the people were in the lower class. Thirty-five percent of the people were in the middle class and the remaining fifteen percent of the people were high class. As part of the interaction, people were given food, prepared by IB students. The lower class was given a half cup of rice. The middle class was given beans and a half cup of rice, and the high class was served a full meal with a complete wait-staff. While the people ate, the emcees shared some shocking statistics about world hunger and discussed how people in the actually waste more food than they consume.

4 Rockets Experience Hunger at the

Oxfam Hunger Banquet (Continued) By Kiana Dunaway (Exclusive Student Content)

It was an eye-opening experience for everyone in at- tendance, especially discovering how many people in the world don’t get enough to eat on a daily basis. Statistics show that more than 20,000 people die each day from hunger. Many people left the banquet with awareness that hunger is a major problem and can be fixed if people stop wasting food and do- nate to local agencies, such as the San Antonio Food Bank. Mr. Zachery Goertz, a coordinator from the San Antonio Food Bank, was a special guest speaker. He presented an overview of the various food programs that are sponsored by the food bank, such as Kids Café and the Boys and Girls Clubs. These programs are designed to cater to children and their families. For example, one special program is the backpack program, where kids are given backpacks stuffed with food, so they are able to eat over the weekend. The food bank also of- fers a service to assist people with their utility bills and trans- portation to and from work. One important thing that Mr. Goertz noted was that the San Antonio economy is strong enough to support hunger through donations and contributions. However, there are still people who are struggling to make ends meet, sometimes unsuccessfully. San Antonio needs donations to help feed its hungry. The annual Oxfam Hunger Banquet hosted by the Judson IB students plays an important role in alleviating this problem. The banquet educates the public, increases awareness, and garners support from the local community .

5 Judson High School’s Computer Science Club District Champs 5 th Consecutive Year By John Ryan (Exclusive Student Content)

The Judson High School Computer Science club won first place in district University Interscholastic League (UIL) for the fifth consecutive year and ad- vanced to the Regional competition at the Universi- ty of Texas at San Antonio in May. The event was hosted at Canyon High School in New Braunfels. The team, composed of seniors Jh’on West, Tyler Hester, Christian De Hoyos, and Miguel Gutierrez won first place in Team Computer Science Pro- gramming and won multiple medals in the Individu- al Computer Science exam competition----with Jh’on receiving first, Tyler receiving third, and Mi- guel winning fifth. The club’s coach, Mr. John Ala- mo, has been with the club since 2009, their entire 5-year reign as district champs. After this year, however, a majority of the club members will be heading to universities, leaving a new generation of students to continue the success of the club. Tyler Hester, the president of the club, be- lieves that the club will continue to do well at competitions. “I can say with confidence that the science club will continue to prosper as new students become inspired and join.” If that’s you or someone you know, current or future Rockets, Mr. Alamo and club members would like for you to join.

DISTRICT AN EXAMPLE OF ENERGY MANAGEMENT SUCCESS

Lee Raspberry talks with CPS Energy Officials about JISD’s Energy Plan

According to CPS Energy, Judson ISD is its best example of how organizations can reduce energy use and turn it around to better itself. As a result, the company came to the Administrative Offices to pick the brain of Energy Man- agement Director Lee Raspberry on how his department did it. The district is in its second year participating in what is called the Demand Response program...a program that encourages voluntary energy reduction during the peak energy usage time in the summer. Demand Response has been around for several years on a residential basis, but the compa- ny is seeing that huge cuts in power use can be realized at the com- pany, multi-building level too. In fact, Judson ISD is being used as a case study for companies and school districts to follow so they can see major conservation savings.

When the school district first participated in the program in the summer of 2013,” Raspberry said, “four schools were involved, this year seven more were added making a total of 11 campuses.” When the first year was completed, the district collected an incen- tive check from CPS Energy for $45,540 which the district turned around and invested into more energy efficient energy upgrades. Raspberry explained, “those upgrades were projects such as a light- ing replacements at Judson Middle School and the retro-fitting of lighting fixtures in six school gymnasiums.” Again, all paid for with energy savings from the first Demand Response incentive check.

The summer of 2014 the district's goal was to reduce power load by 2,340 kilowatts...that's enough electricity to pow- er 65 homes for a day. So far, with the D.R. program coming to it's seasonal end the last day of August, the district is looking at roughly $109,000 in incentives back from CPS Energy. Those dollars will be reinvested in renewable ener- gy and conservation projects. Much of it will be tied to instructional or curriculum efforts teaching students.

Lee Raspberry is seen here last year with Executive Director of Operations Daniel Kershner and JISD Board Member Gilbert Flores as CPS Energy Officials present the district with an incentive rebate check worth more than $45,000. The next check is expected to be worth more than $100,000.

Besides buying school supplies and clothing for your kids, part of getting your kids ready for school is mak- ing sure they have all their shots. There are a number of places where you can take your children to get the shots they need over the next several weeks...many of which are at a very reasonable cost. The most important thing however is to have it done so your student can have a good start to the year. Where ever you go just make sure you bring your child's shot record with you. Be wise and immunize. Below is a list of shot clinics across the city.
