FORKTAIL 33 (2017): 81–87 The importance of Muraviovka Park, Amur province, Far East Russia, for bird species threatened at regional, national and international level based on observations between 2011 and 2016 WIELAND HEIM & SERGEI M. SMIRENSKI The middle reaches of the Amur River in Far East Russia are still an under-surveyed region, yet holding a very high regional biodiversity. During a six-year survey at Muraviovka Park, a non-governmental nature reserve, 271 bird species have been recorded, 14 of which are globally threatened, highlighting the importance of this area for bird conservation. INTRODUCTION RESULTS Recent studies have shown that East Asia and especially the Amur A total of 271 species was recorded inside Muraviovka Park between basin hold huge numbers of endangered species, and the region was 2011 and 2016; 24 species are listed as Near Treatened (NT), designated as a hotspot of threatened biodiversity (e.g. Vignieri 2014). In December 2014, 16th to 25th, an eight-day solo visit to South Korea was completed, in an attempt to see 18 target species not yet on my world list. All of them, except Oriental Stork, could be located, with a Grey-backed Thrush as an unexpected bonus. From a viewpoint of a world lister, it may make sense to visit South Korea in winter, because of a locally concentrated assortment of rare wintering species, which are otherwise scattered around a vast region across China and Eastern Siberia. Also, the Korean winter is a mild one if compared to the conditions in Northern Europe, for example. Yes, the day temperature may be -17 C on the northern mountains, as it was on the 22nd, but it is not going to be -30 C, or lower! In the south of the peninsula, milder conditions prevail, also in winter. There may be up to 15 cm of snow on ground in parts of the region, but other areas of the Korean peninsula have no or only a smattering of snow. South Korea is, however, also a particularly difficult destination to visit, in terms of detailed birdwatching information. Part of the material is only available in Korean and difficult to search because of the unique lettering. The English language information, on the other hand, is not always collectively shared, but kept secret by gatekeepers who prefer to guide people to the birds, for a fee, and also expect secrecy from their customers. -

Box 643, Weipa, Queensland 4874 Summary A White-throated Nightjar Eurostopodus mystacalis was photographed flying low above the sea in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, at ~1600 h on 25 August 2010. Sightings of Nightjars behaving similarly in the same area in the days before obtaining the conclusive photographs suggest that they were on southerly migration, returning from their wintering sojourn in New Guinea to their breeding grounds in Australia. Other relevant sightings are given, and the significance of this behaviour is discussed. The evidence Observations in 2010 At 0900 h on 21 August 2010, whilst conducting a fishing charter by boat in the Gulf of Carpentaria off the western coast of Cape York, Queensland, BB observed an unusual bird flying low over the sea. Although his view was sufficient to excite curiosity, it did not enable identification. Twice on 23 August 2010, the skipper of a companion vessel, who had been alerted to the sighting, had similar experiences. Then at 1600 h on 25 August 2010, BB saw ‘the bird’ again. In order to determine its identity, he followed it, which necessitated his boat reaching speeds of 20–25 knots. During the pursuit, which lasted 10–15 minutes, he obtained over 15 photographs and a video recording. He formed the opinion that the bird was a nightjar, most probably a White-throated Nightjar Eurostopodus mystacalis.
