In Gyeongsangbuk-do, the NOx emissions were highest, 59 followed by CO, VOC, SOx, NH3, and TSP, PM10 and PM2.5 which is similar trend to South 60 Korea (Fig. S2(b)). However, Pohang showed a different pattern with the highest NOx 61 emissions, followed by SOx, VOC, CO, TSP, PM10, PM2.5 and NH3 (Fig. S2(c)). 62 Point source (combustion in energy industries + combustion in manufacturing industries + 63 production processes + waste treatment and disposal) in South Korea accounted for 64 1,226,609 tons (34.6% of total emissions in South Korea) of the air pollutants. 65 Gyeongsangbuk-do has a similar trend with 106,439 tons (35.8% of total emissions in 66 Gyeongsangbuk-do) of the air pollutants. However, Pohang has a significantly high 67 contribution with 56,144 tons (69.2% of total emissions in Pohang) of the air pollutants. 68 Area source (non-industrial combustion + storage and distribution of fuels + solvent 69 utilization + agriculture + other area sources) in South Korea accounted for 1,055,461 tons 70 (29.8% of total emissions in South Korea) of the air pollutants. Gyeongsangbuk-do has a 71 similar trend with 90,982 tons (30.6% of total emissions in Gyeongsangbuk-do) of the air 72 pollutants. However, Pohang has a less contribution with 6,903 tons (8.5% of total emissions 73 in Pohang) of the air pollutants. 74 Mobile source (road transport + non-road transport) in South Korea accounted for 75 1,261,782 tons (35.6% of total emissions in South Korea) of the air pollutants. 76 Gyeongsangbuk-do has a similar contribution with 99,709 tons (33.6% of total emissions in 77 Gyeongsangbuk-do) of the air pollutants. The transformation of South Korea from one of the poorest countries in the world in the 1950s to an industrial power and a member of OECD was exceptionally fast. The policy promoting the import of raw materials and the latest technologies enabled Korea to join the group of the most rapidly growing economies in the world in 2004. Such an imposing growth rate was the result of booming industrial production, trade expansion to Asian, American and European markets and a liberal economic policy. The Korean economy is the most foreign- trade dependent country of all OECD members, with sea transport playing a predominant role. This article analyses basic Korean macroeconomic indicators within 2002-2018, with particular emphasis on the GDP. It discusses sea transport figures, including the cargo handling capacity of Korean ports, as well as port and logistics operations and the throughput of Busan, the largest South Korean and one of the largest seaport in the world. Additionally, this article shows innovation and ecology focus in the port of Busan, and primary directions of the state policy in the field of environmentally friendly growth.

From South Korea’s standpoint, a key concern has been North Korea’s advanced cyber warfare capabilities and alleged involvement of its substantial workforce in the Internet’s dark side activities. These issues need to be looked at the backdrop of the North’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities. This paper draws principally upon theories and concepts from military strategy and warfare to examine the contexts, mechanisms, and processes associated with the cyber warfare in the Korean peninsula. We also compare the two Koreas in terms of various forms of asymmetries in cyber warfare and cyber attacks. Also highlighted in the paper are South Korea’s recent initiatives and actions to enhance cyber-offense and cyber-defense capabilities. This study investigates the effect of energy performance information on consumer residential choice by using a discrete choice experiment in South Korea. The estimation results confirmed that the energy efficiency level of the given housing has a significant effect on consumer residential choice when the related information is actually delivered. Combined with evidence from the simulation study, we suggest that obligating the owners to provide energy performance information to potential buyers/tenants would be necessary for enhancing the use of the information during the consumer decision-making process. Additionally, the simulation result implies that the effectiveness of the policy can be underestimated by the price premium related to energy efficiency. Therefore, we suggest that the government should control the price premium for high-efficiency buildings at the early stage so that the policy related to disclosing the energy performance can be on track.

The High School Equalization Policy (HSEP), introduced into South Korea in the mid-1970s, is representative of such a policy. HSEP prohibits high school entrance exams and randomly assigns students to a high school near their residence. Despite its aim of ensuring equal opportunities in education for all students regardless of socio-economic status, a frequent criticism was that HSEP could prompt students’ families to move to a region near traditional elite high schools, which, in turn, would widen the gap in house prices between different regions. Thus, we conducted an empirical study to examine the secondary influence of the HSEP on the housing market via a difference-in-differences (DD) analysis. We used house price data from the Gangwon province, as the partial introduction of HSEP into the province allowed for a quasi-experimental study on the effect of HSEP. The result revealed that, contrary to expectations, the HSEP in Gangwon had the opposite spillover effect of reducing the gap of the average house prices by 5%~9% across regions.
