The report provides an overview of the recovery and development activities undertaken by the agencies, funds and programmes of the United Nations system and other international actors to address the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. The United Nations system remains committed to promoting the principle of leaving no one behind and ensuring that the governmental efforts to support the affected regions are aimed at achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. 19-16688 (E) 041019 151019 *1916688* A/74/461 I. General situation 1. Since the Chernobyl nuclear plant accident on 26 April 1986, the United Nations, along with the Governments of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine, has been leading the recovery and development efforts to support the affected regions. While extensive humanitarian work was conducted immediately after the accident, additional recovery and rehabilitation activities were conducted in the following years to secure the area, limit the exposure of the population, provide medical follow-up to those affected and study the health consequences of the incident. -

The Chernobyl experience proved the need to consolidate the international water protection capacity on the basis of scientific knowledge which should exclude inefficient use of national resource. Strategical and technological interventions on water quality management need to be revised on the base of the experience gained after the 1986 accident. The lesson learned from the Chernobyl experience has to be used as a key element in the adoption of a strategy of water bodies management. Remedial actions have to be based with an integrated approach considering: • dose reduction; • secondary environmental effects of countermeasures; • synergisms of radionuclides and countermeasure applications with other toxicants; • social and economical factors of the contaminated areas. 1. Introduction Surface and ground water resources of Ukraine, Belarus and the Russian Federation represent a vital problem for nearly 150 million population of these regions. After the Chernobyl accident, 8.5 million people living in the Dnieper basin became recipients of radionuclides through direct consumption of water from the Dnieper river-reservoir system and more than 30 million through irrigation and fishery. -
Fires in Ukraine in the Exclusion Zone Around the Chernobyl Power Plant: Point Position
Logo IRSN April 15, 2020 avril 2020 Information note Fires in Ukraine in the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl power plant: Point position Since the publication of our previous information note on April 7, 2020, fires in Ukraine have spread nearby the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Following numerous questions received by our Institute about their radiological consequences, which, according to Ukrainian authorities, which have now been brought under control, this note provides an assessment of the possible radiological impacts for the firefighters as well as for the inhabitants of Kiev. It also reviews cesium 137 (137Cs) airborne activity levels likely to be detected in France due to the transport of contaminated air masses. 1/ Current situation as of April 15, 2020 Forest fires broke out in Ukraine about ten days ago in a territory heavily contaminated by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident. These fires reached the exclusion zone and the surrounding environment (about 1 km) of the nuclear power plant from April 8, 2020 (see Fig. 1). Nearly 400 fire-fighters and 90 specialized aerial and terrestrial vehicles, including planes and water- bomber helicopters, have been mobilized for more than a week for the control of the fires. According to some estimates, the burned area reached about 20,000 ha. Ukrainian authorities said earlier this week that "the efforts of the fire- fighters and the rain have reduced the forest fire in the Chernobyl exclusion zone". They assured Tuesday, April 14, 2020 in the morning that the risks of fire spreading were now limited to isolated or smoldering fires. At the end of April 14, 2020, the Ukrainian authorities indicated that the fires were under control. -

KYIV, UKRAINE, 2 April, 2017 – Clean Futures Fund co-founders Erik Kambarian and Lucas Hixson have arrived in Ukraine to meet with officials and Ukrainian organizations to coordinate international cooperation projects within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and the Chernobyl worker city of Slavutych. Erik and Lucas are not strangers to Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant as they have participated in professional visits and radiological training at the facility and surrounding zone since 2013. At the conclusion one of their visits, they recognized the need to give back to a community that they have learned so much from and created the non-profit organization, Clean Futures Fund. “We are proud to have the opportunity to meet with our Ukrainian counterparts and officials from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Management Agency, the Ministry of Ecology, and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Administration to work together to improve safe working conditions and long-term care for Chernobyl workers and individuals in the affected areas.” – Lucas Hixson The first project CFF plans to implement is a spay/neuter and vaccination program for the stray dog population that surrounds Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Hundreds of stray dogs, descendants of abandoned pets from the 1986 evacuation, live around the plant and within the exclusion zone. These dogs are exposed to attacks from the rabid wolf population and in turn present a safety concern for the workers.
