Collins4, Izeni Pires Farias2 Rafaela Priscila Ota 2 [email protected] and Tomas Hrbek Pacus of the genus Myloplus represent a formidable taxonomic challenge, and particularly so for the case of M. asterias and M. rubripinnis, two widespread and common species that harbor considerable morphological diversity. Here we apply DNA barcoding and multiple species discovery methods to find candidate species in this complex group. We report on one well-supported lineage that is also morphologically and ecologically distinct. This lineage represents a new species that can be distinguished from congeners by the presence of dark chromatophores on lateral-line scales, which gives the appearance of a black lateral line. It can be further diagnosed by having 25–29 branched dorsal-fin rays (vs. 18–24), 89–114 perforated scales from the supracleithrum to the end of hypural plate (vs. 56–89), and 98–120 total lateral line scales (vs. 59–97). The new species is widely distributed in the Amazon basin, but seems to have a preference for black- and clearwater habitats. Species Composition and Invasion Risks of Alien Ornamental Freshwater
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Species composition and invasion risks of alien ornamental freshwater fshes from pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia Abdulwakil Olawale Saba1,2, Ahmad Ismail1, Syaizwan Zahmir Zulkifi1, Muhammad Rasul Abdullah Halim3, Noor Azrizal Abdul Wahid4 & Mohammad Noor Azmai Amal1* The ornamental fsh trade has been considered as one of the most important routes of invasive alien fsh introduction into native freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, the species composition and invasion risks of fsh species from 60 freshwater fsh pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia were studied. A checklist of taxa belonging to 18 orders, 53 families, and 251 species of alien fshes was documented. Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST) showed that seven (30.43%), eight (34.78%) and eight (34.78%) species were considered to be high, medium and low invasion risks, respectively. After the calibration of the Fish Invasiveness Screening Kit (FISK) v2 using the Receiver Operating Characteristics, a threshold value of 17 for distinguishing between invasive and non-invasive fshes was identifed. As a result, nine species (39.13%) were of high invasion risk. In this study, we found that non-native fshes dominated (85.66%) the freshwater ornamental trade in Klang Valley, while FISK is a more robust tool in assessing the risk of invasion, and for the most part, its outcome was commensurate with FIST. This study, for the frst time, revealed the number of high-risk ornamental fsh species that give an awareness of possible future invasion if unmonitored in Klang Valley, Malaysia. As a global hobby, fshkeeping is cherished by both young and old people.

Piranhas & Pacus Concept Piranhas are fierce little fish that swarm around animals unlucky enought to fall into the river, then tear them to bits...right? Actually, some piranhas eat fruits, nuts, and seeds. Piranhas are more diverse than you might think. Materials cast of mega-piranha jaw pacu jaw piranha jaw Background These three fish are all related to one another. The mega-piranha is extinct now, but it has a lot in common with present-day relatives like the pacu and the red-bellied piranha. They belong to an order of fish called Characiformes, or characins, and within that order, are part of a subfamily called Serrasalminae. Dozens of species are part of this group, and their body shapes and diets vary. You might be familiar with some Serrasalminae such as the infamous red-bellied piranha, the large herbivorous pacu, or the beautiful silver dollar. Piranhas are an ancient lineage with fossils as old as 13 million years. In Argentina, Dr. Alberto Cione discovered a fossilized jaw of a “mega-piranha”, a species fish that lived 6-9 million years ago. The mega-piranha was a big fish, probably 1 meter (3 feet) in length. No one is sure what it ate, but it may have been a plant eater like its living relative, the pacu. Although it is now extinct, its skeleton helps us understand more about its present-day relatives. Judging from its teeth, it may fit in between the pacu and the meat-eating piranhas on the evolutionary chain. Pacus have two rows of flat teeth; piranhas have one row of razor-sharp teeth.
