First Dulac edition, Edition de Luxe. Number 188 of 350 deluxe copies signed by Edmund Dulac. 4to. Full white vellum with gilt lettering and vignettes in blue and gold. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Printed on hand made paper. Colour frontis and 49 other colour plates all mounted onto grey art paper and protected by captioned tissue guards. A near fine, bright copy of Dulac’s first major gift book. Vellum uncommonly clean, occasional spots of foxing to the tissue guards. [39778] £2,750 This book is Dulac’s first major commission. It is an impressive volume, including stories from the Arabian Nights, such as Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and The King of the Ebony Isles. The publishers commis- sioned Dulac with the aim of competing for market share with the books illustrated by Arthur Rackham. This deluxe version of the Christmas Gift Book showed what a good choice they made. Dulac’s colour palette of deep blue shades is a triumph, transporting the reader to the sultry evenings of the Middle East. EDMUND DULAC JONKERS RARE BOOKS 2. Colour frontis and 49 other colour plates all mounted onto grey art paper and protected by captioned tissue guards. The pates are fresh and crisp, not creasing, although one has a tiny corner scuff. An uncommonly nice copy, in very good condition indeed. The text block is uncommonly clean and free from foxing, or finger marks. [40917] £975 This magnificent volume was Dulac’s first major book commission. His 50 watercolour illustrations perfectly capture the mood of these Arabian Tales. Well known stories such as Ali Baba and the King of the Ebony Isle lend themselves to his rich colours, atmospheric scenes and dark starry skies. EDMUND DULAC JONKERS RARE BOOKS 3. Specially bound in a publish- er’s binding of dark green crushed morocco with decorations and lettering embossed in gilt. Top edge gilt. Pictorial endpapers and 40 colour plates mounted onto Japon and set within a printed olive green border, under captioned tissue guards. In near fine condition with a slightly faded spine and bookplate on front past- edown. A very handsome book. [29732] £950 This unrecorded deluxe edition differs from the trade edition in a number of ways, from the sumptuous leather binding to the mounting of the plates on japon rather than green art paper. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Twenty-eight mounted colour plates with captioned tissue guards. A near fine, bright copy. Twenty eight beautiful colour plates and a number of chapter headings print- ed in brown and cream accompany Poe’s poetry. A fine, bright copy, very clean throughout. This is a beautifully designed book with twenty three lovely colour plates mounted within a decora- tive border and protected by a captioned tissue guard. Each page of text has the same decorative border. A near fine copy, none of the usual foxing, light bump to one corner. [40918] £950 Stories included are Sindbad the Sailor, Aladdin and The Wonderful Lamp, The Story of Three Calendars and The Sleeper Awakened. PROVENANCE: Prize bookplate, awarded to E.A. Mason. White buckram decorated in blue and gilt. Decorative title page and 15 mounted colour plates. The illustrations in this book are in deep and vibrant colours. A very near fine copy, endpapers browned as usual but beautifully clean and bright. [38596] £1,750 The fairy stories in this book are gathered from various parts of the world, including Italy, Russia and France. EDMUND DULAC JONKERS RARE BOOKS 9. Treasure Island DULAC, Edmund; STEVENSON, Robert Louis Benn, 1927. First edition, Edition de Luxe. Number 4 of only 50 copies, signed by Edmund Dulac. Publisher’s creamy vellum with leather title label. Top edge gilt. Twelve colour plates and numerous black and white drawings in the text. A very good copy indeed, vellum a little bowed with a couple of minor marks. Page edges slightly browned and some foxing to the preliminaries and occasionally to a plate mount. [29794] £6,000 The tiny print run makes this one of the rarest of all the illustrated gift books. The illustrations for this book mark a new departure in Dulac’s work. He enters a phase of greens and blues, views the scenes from above and afar. Hughey says, “The detailing and design of the pictures present some of Dulac’s most careful and superb painting.” In fact, the watercolours he produced for this book were his own favourites. Jean Ferdinand Joubert de la Ferté was born in Paris in 1810. As an adult he preferred to be known simply as Joubert. He studied painting and engraving at the École des Beaux-Arts (School of Fine Arts) in Paris, then moved to England in the early 1830s to escape the turmoil of post-Napoleon France. He became a British citizen in 1855. His engraving skills were noticed by the printing firm of Thomas De La Rue and Co. based on his engravings of the works of several members of the Royal Academy of Arts. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT A huge number of illustrators appeared in the beginning of XX century in Great Britain, first of all in London, who worked on the design of wonderful gift-books. The most outstanding of them were Arthur Rackham (1867–1939), Edmund Dulac (1882–1953), brothers Charles Robinson (1870–1937) and William Heath Robinson (1872–1944), as well as brothers Charles Maurice Detmold (1883–1908) and Edward Julius Detmold (1883–1957). In addition to these artists, more than twenty more graphics were engaged in illustrating various novels, short stories, plays and fairy tales in England in this historical period, but their achievements are either less visible or are the result of imitating the abovementioned illustrators, which makes them secondary to the leaders of this direction. The peculiarity of book illustration of this period is the high level of technical training of graphic artists who studied on the best examples of Victorian art, numerous references in their work to the styles of past epochs, as well as focusing mainly on classical, or fairy tale literature. All of them are unique in their own way, and therefore there is a special interest in identifying common sources of influence on these masters, to determine the universal stylistic features of their work on the basis of the key subjects of fiction illustrated by them, as well as their classification within the era in all these categories.

Classically trained in Paris at the Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi before moving to England where he received his first commission to illustrate a series of fairy tales. A keen artist, Nielsen painted numerous landscapes and scenery pieces for theatre. But perhaps his most known work was for Walt Disney, for whom he provided concept sketches as well as contributing to various sequences of ‘ F a n t a s i a’. Despite a long and varied career, Kay Nielsen’s last few years were spent painting murals for schools as the age of illustrators ended.
