As well as having a number of green open spaces dotted within the estate, St George’s borders both St George’s Green and Swedenborg Gardens which gives the estate a green and open feel even though it is in the heart of Shadwell.

St George’s is also steeped in history as apart from being close to the site of the historic , it has on its doorstep both the Nicholas Hawksmoor- designed church of St George-in-the-East and the world’s largest surviving Grand , ‘Wiltons’.

St George’s Estate About the Estate The estate also has close historic connections with Sweden and in particular Emmanuel Swedenborg, the Swedish scientist and philosopher. Swedenborg Gardens and the Swedenborg Memorial mark the spot where the Swedish Church, Ulriika Eleonara, once stood. The old Swedish Church apart from being key to the Swedish community in the 1700s was also the place where Emmanuel Swedenborg worshipped and the place where his body was buried until it was returned to Sweden in 1908.

Estate Community Venues

The estate has previously relied on dated community facilities in Swedenborg Gardens and within Stockholm House. Under the EastendHomes regeneration programme a new community facility, facing on The Highway, is being developed and is due to open in 2013. Residents have been surveyed on the facilities to be offered within the new facility, and have been involved in the design process for the building. www.eastendhomes.net

Regenerating the estate Since transfer extensive works to the St George’s estate have been carried out, including: • Creation of 161 new homes, including 54 for EastendHomes tenants • Internal refurbishments • Installation of new windows • Electrical works • Concrete repairs • Re-roofing Works to renovate the podium, tower block lobbies and underground garages are anticipated to be finished by early 2014.

ACTION PLAN

In reviewing the information gathered in preparing this Neighbourhood Plan, and following discussions with local residents, we have four key goals to improve the services EastendHomes provide to residents of the St George’s estate. These are: • Complete regeneration works to the podium area to significantly improve a major focal point of the estate

• To work with Trees for Cities to improve green areas on the estate

• To provide a community centre for all residents and used by all residents

• Continue working closely with the police safer neighbourhood team to maintain current low levels of anti-social behaviour
