Following the entry into office of the new European Commission on 1 December 2019, in addition to the portfolio of Commissioner for Competition which I have retained, in my capacity as Executive Vice-President of the Commission for a Europe fit for the Digital Age, I also have the broader policy responsibility of coordinating the Commission’s work in addressing the varied challenges arising from today’s digital economy, and ensuring that the digital world works better for European citizens. Although only 9 months have passed since my previous submission, policy reflections on the issues and challenges raised by digital platforms have intensified around the world, and so it is a very timely moment for me to be able to address you again, and inform you of the latest developments and the nature of our own reflections, both as regards the application of competition policy itself, as well as policy initiatives that are complementary to competition policy. While parties and issues have not become superfluous, leaders are required to win support of citizens for their views and plans, both in elections and while in office. To be successful in this respect, credibility is a crucial asset. Research has shown that credible leaders are thought to be competent, trustworthy, and caring. What requires more attention is the meaning of competent, caring, and trustworthy leaders in the eyes of citizens. In this paper the question is needed to be credible according to citizens in different leadership positions, e.g. cabinet ministers and parliamentary party leaders. To answer this question, it was studied what is expected of leaders in terms of competence, trustworthiness, and caring by conducting an extensive qualitative analysis of Tweets and newspaper articles between August 2013 and June 2014. In this analysis, four Dutch leadership cases with a contrasting credibility rating were compared: two cabinet ministers (Frans Timmermans and Mark Rutte) and two parliamentary party leaders (Emile Roemer and Diederik Samsom). This analysis demonstrates that competence relates to knowledgeability, decisiveness and bravery, performance, and political strategy. Trustworthiness includes keeping promises, consistency in views and actions, honesty and sincerity, and dependability. Caring means having an eye for citizens’ needs and concern, morality, constructive attitude, and no self-enrichment.

    5-1-2021 Tekst nieuwjaarsspeech 2021 door Jetta Klijnsma, commissaris van de Koning in Drenthe Beste mensen, Van harte welkom in het provinciehuis. Alles is dit jaar anders dan anders, normaal gesproken schudden we op onze nieuwjaarsreceptie elkaars handen en knuffelen we elkaar. Dit jaar gaat dat natuurlijk niet. En u snapt waarom: Corona heerst nog steeds. We zitten in een lockdown: mensen werken thuis, kinderen gaan niet naar school. Corona heeft vorig jaar veel verdriet gebracht. Verdriet in families waar mensen zijn gestorven of heel erg ziek zijn geweest. Verdriet als het gaat om ondernemers die het hoofd niet boven water konden houden tijdens deze crisis. Verdriet als het ging om situaties thuis, waar het té ingewikkeld werd. Dus makkelijk is het allemaal niet. Maar u snapt dat ik u toch heel graag een fantastisch mooi nieuwjaar wil wensen. De afgelopen maanden heb ik veel werkbezoeken afgelegd, fysiek en digitaal. Ik heb veel Drenten gesproken, in allerlei sectoren. Ik wil u graag aan een aantal van deze Drenten voorstellen. Wilt u naar hun verhaal luisteren? Ik wil u om te beginnen graag voorstellen aan Herman Woltersom uit Coevorden, waar dit jaar het startschot gegeven zou worden voor een bijzonder herdenkingsjaar. Want, we zouden het bijna vergeten, 2020 was het jaar waarin we 75 jaar zijn bevrijd. Ruim honderd historische militaire voertuigen zouden over de Bentheimerbrug trekken, precies zoals de geallieerden dat destijds deden. Het feest ging niet door, maar herdenkingsvrijwilliger Woltersom houdt moed: “We hopen in 2021 de bevrijding toch nog op gepaste wijze te kunnen herdenken en vieren.” Wat wel doorging in 2020: Hét Duurzaam Drenthe Event, de verkiezing van het duurzaamste bedrijf van Drenthe.

Daarbij rijst de vraag een exclusief parlementaire aangelegen­ hoe om te gaan met de aanspraak van heid werd. Zo werd de beoogde stabiele diverse groepen op quota, zeker gezien regering geheel het werk van zes (blanke) subgroepen in verschillende categorieën mannen, die met hun coalitieakkoord als kunnen vallen.

    Day by Day Summary of the Election Campaign Friday, 26 August It was Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen’s plan to introduce a bonus to people purchasing a house. This bonus has been criticized for artificially inflating house prices and therefore for being a bad way to instigate growth. On Saturday 20 August the Social Democrats (S) somehow learned about the plan and decided to launch it themselves, despite Helle Thorning-Schmidt having said on Friday that she did not want to introduce measures to stimulate the housing market. This led to a chaotic Saturday where Løkke Rasmussen and the Liberal Party (V) tried to do damage control. Quickly the Danish People’s Party (DF) declared their opposition to the plan due to a lot of their voters not being house owners. Liberal Alliance (LA) is as a general rule opposed to state subsidies so they were opposed as well leaving V and the Conservative Party (K) alone with the plan on the blue wing. On the red wing the situation was similar. S and the Socialist People’s Party (SF) agreed on the idea while the Unity List (EL) represents the left wing and therefore does not believe in the state funding those with the means to buy a house – plus a lot of their voters rent their homes. The Social Liberal Party (R) is opposed with the argument that the plan is a shortsighted one which will probably not do much for the economy anyway. Thus S-SF and VK were alone and they did not want to cooperate to get a majority for the plan.

Hierbij moet aangetekend worden dat er op 28 november op het XXI congres in Maarssen een nieuw partijbestuur gekozen is. De belangrijkste veranderingen zijn de verkiezing van een nieuwe partijvoorzitter -te weten Ron Meyer- en een uitbreiding van het aantal algemeen bestuursleden van negen naar elf.
