Universiti Sains Malaysia 2Faculty of Architecture, Ittihad Private University Abstract. Neo-minimalist style is considered as the most popular style in Malaysia in 2010s. The style is rediscovering from early modern minimalist movement with a design concept “less is more”. It applies minimal and efficient design of architectural character in defining form and space. Penang Island the second most important city in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur. It is located at the north-western part of the country. The first case studies is the Light Linear apartment which has sixteen stories located on the east cost of Penang Island at Pantai Street, Penang. The second case study is BayStar apartment building, the eleven stories building tis located in Bayan Lepas at the seaside facing Jerejak Island. In order to conduct this study Fluke Ti20 thermal imager was used to capture thermal images for the west facades of the selected case study hourly from 12:00 to 6:00 pm on 15th March 2017. • MISC. HERITAGE NEWS –February to July2018
MISC. HERITAGE NEWS –February to July2018 What we spotted of interest on the Sarawak and regional cultural heritage scene in the last six months The "Forgotten Beauty" exhibition by Tan Wei Kheng at the Rainforest Fringe, July 2018 NATION WIDE Heritage management did not feature during the political campaigns during the 14th General Elections of 9 May 2018. After the elections, calls were made to reinstate a ministry of culture, arts and heritage to be separate from the ministry of tourism, but the new Government returned the current structure of Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, with under it, the Department of National Heritage. The Minister is YB Tuan Mahamaddin Bin Ketapi, a newly elected Parti Warisan Sabah (Sabah Heritage Party) MP. The impact of the change of Government on the heritage conservation scene is still to be felt. (The Sarawak State Government remains unchanged, Sarawak being the only Malaysian State which runs its state elections on a different calendar). “Call made for PH to reinstate Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage” - New Straits Times, 19 May 2018 “Keep culture apart from tourism”- The Star, 11 June 2018 Worth noting on the nationwide heritage scene is the new “savemyheritage” website set up by Badan Warisan Malaysia, the national heritage conservation NGO. The site will function as a platform for initiatives aimed at protecting specific threatened or endangered heritage. Great initiative, Badan Warisan! SHS – 11/08/2018- [email protected] - web: sarawakheritagesociety.com 2/15 savemyheritage.org, as accessed 10/08/2018 SARAWAK The intention to revamp the Sarawak Cultural heritage Ordinance 1993 was restated by officials in relation to the Government’s suggestion to apply for Word Heritage status for Kuching.

As years have passed it is a challenge to differentiate the genuineness of landmasses created by natural geological formations or by coastal reclamation projects. An account is given of the environmental impact of solid wastes used for reclaiming land in coastal areas of Penang and of the impact of a major sewage outfall in the western channel. Leaching of heavy metals was shown to be one of the main sources of contamination from solid wastes. This paper presents eight lines of ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys and sediment analysis to identify the anthropogenic interventions that shaped the urban landscape of Penang Island by excavations, filling, and embankment construction along the coastline and differentiate it from the natural one. The surveys were implemented in two locations, the Batu Ferringhi area, representing the natural coastline, and Persiaran Bayan Indah (the Queensbay Citation: Ulfa, Y.; Jia, T.Y.; Che Yaziz, Mall area), representing the anthropogenic coastal landform.
