GANGSTER MOVIE INVITE YOU AND A GUEST TO SEE While nothing revolutionary, this action-drama is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. BY AVIEL CHANG Richard Foreman, Jr./SMPSP

Shia LaBeouf as Jack and Tom Hardy as Forrest in Lawless

Grade: B+

The Road and The Proposition were both critically acclaimed dramas that marked a successful beginning to John Hillcoat’s directing career. On August 29 his much-anticipated next film, Lawless, hits the big screen. While lacking a certain visceral punch and failing to truly provide a lasting impact, Lawless is still a very solid film that proves Hillcoat is here to stay. Starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy, much of the film is left to these men’s acting chops. Hardy is undeniably solid as always. His portrayal as the brooding, calculating oldest brother is perfect. Hardy is able to successfully maintain a constant stoic persona necessary for the role; what is even more impressive is how he is able to take this seemingly one dimensional character and create it into a real person. There are a number of scenes in which Hardy needs to create emotional depth without heavily altering his character’s macho exterior. He wholly succeeds in this, especially with the help of co-star Jessica Chastain; the chemistry between their two characters is great and worth a second look. LaBeouf is at it again with his usual manic performance. Love him or hate him, you’re not going to get much that differs from his usual work. I believe that he is a good choice for the role To enter for a chance to despite the fact that I wasn’t convinced by his accent whatsoever. The rapport between Hardy and LaBeouf’s characters was also convincing, as you truly believed they were brothers. Overall the acting was great, as Gary Oldman and Jason Clarke put in convincing performances win a pass for two for the that complemented the leads perfectly. Personally, I liked Guy Pearce’s performance as the villain, but some may find it to be too stereotypical and unrealistic. Los Angeles Premiere, register at: Hillcoat has established that he knows how to properly pace a film, slowly building up the tension and dread until the climax. Lawless succeeds in the same fashion, though it is not as intense http://www.campuscircle.com/screening/RET/ or exhilarating as his previous works. The visceral thrills are there and do pack a punch, but only give us a taste of what could have been. END-OF- A video contest for filmmakers, a soundtrack SUMMER for road trip sex and the reinvention of the former Antigone Rising lead singer, Cassidy. TREAT” By Kevin Wierzbicki -James Dawson, . FrontRowFeatures.com INTRODUCING CRIS RUFF Los Angeles-based songstress Cris Ruff has a five-song E.P. called Friends and Enemies dropping in October, and there’s quite a bit of buzz going on the record already and for good reason. Wu-Tang producer Tru James helped Ruff hone her sound, which is said to be a mash-up of jazz, pop, soul and hip-hop. “I was inspired by mid-70s singer-songwriter soul as well as a lot of pop, hip-hop and jazz,” says Ruff. “I freestyle everything in the studio so this project has a really spontaneous and rhythmic feel. I’ll do, at most, three passes on everything, and the verses are completely unique as a result. I just say them into the microphone, and Tru records them. It’s the truest representation of myself I could give.” Ruff plays a free show at Hemingway’s Lounge in Hollywood on September 11.

M83 VIDEO CONTEST Anthony Gonzalez, a French, L.A.-based artist known popularly as M83, is having a video contest for filmmakers worldwide. Gonzalez is offering a prize of 3000 British Pounds (about $4,700) for the winning video based on his single, “Steve McQueen” from the album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. The theme of the video is completely up to the filmmaker; the only guidance Gonzalez is giving is that the clip should not be about Steve McQueen the actor. The song can be downloaded from and the contest entered at genero.tv/m83/. Entries must be in by September 10. M83 plays at the FYF Fest on September 1.

Her recommended playlist includes “Start Me Up” by , “Slow Ride” by Foghat, “Panama” by Van Halen, “Anything Goes” by Guns N’ Roses and “Hurts So Good” by John Mellencamp.
