The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. The Dark Knight Rises Best Movie in Dark Knight Franchise BY NICK BICHO Staff Writer Out of all the big budget, action packed blockbusters that came out this summer, none could have topped the hype and notoriety of The Dark Knight Rises. Starring Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway, The Dark Knight Rises is a tale of despair and redemption that cannot be missed. Director Christopher Nolan's final act in the series lives up to the hype and goes above and beyond the expectations set by the last movie. The plot is set eight years after The Dark Knight, at this time Bruce Wayne (Bale) is a broken man who lives in hiding while trying to deal with the consequences of his actions in the last movie. However, when a new villain comes to Gotham, Bruce Wayne must return as the Batman and save Gotham city once again. Christian Bale does an amazing job playing the part of Bruce Wayne. He’s able to capture the emotion, sorrow, and responsibility of the Batman. However Bale isn't the only one carrying this film. Actors Anne Hathaway and Joseph Gordon Levitt gave spectacular performances in their supporting roles. This movie has a lot of things going right. Other than the stellar performances of all of the actors, the story is deep and fits well with its predecessors. Director Christopher Nolan paints a dark and dreary Gotham city during the Batman's absence and it only gets worse when Bane shows up. Nolan perfectly tells The Batman's story and ends the series on a good note. -

In development era there are so many influences and movement which is changing people personality and gender originality. At this time gender are able to show the equivalence, view, differences, patterns and other behaviors. So in order to hold the self existence and gender originality, people must prove their own power self such as woman with their feminine side and man with their masculinity. In our life feminity and masculinity are formed by the culture in some people environments. Feminity and masculinity are usually associated in certain cultures. It relates with the ideal role which is represented of masculinity and feminity it self. Each role should be obtained to maintain the predicate to be masculine or feminine. People's views about the masculine and feminine eventually become a standard to realize the establishment of the division in their respective roles, and then it will influence people to behave according to the role they want. In a case such as when a man wants to be masculine, they will do things that are associated with masculinity. Most men think masculinity is derived from the physical form which they must accentuate the athletic body, his gallantry and good-looking face. Actually masculinity is not only coming from that point of 1 2 view, but more likely in the role of responsibility of the man himself in action as well as they can face their problems, power to survive and do many good things. -

Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history. -

6 “I’ll Be Whatever Gotham Needs Me to Be” Batman, the Gothic and Popular Culture Agnieszka Soltysik Monnet Batman fi rst appeared in 1939, close on the heels of the recently created and hugely successful Superman. The young comic book industry, just emerg- ing as a separate medium from the newspaper comic strip, and hitherto mainly defi ned by men in suits, now demanded more visually appealing (i.e. costumed) characters. Batman was born as a darker and more com- plex variation on the red-caped superhero: he is Superman’s Gothic dou- ble.1 Although many superheroes were created in the 1940s and since then, Batman has remained the darkest and most problematic, not least because his powers come not from a magical source but from the brooding inten- sity of a childhood trauma. Over seventy years later, Batman has grown to become bigger than ever, eclipsing even Superman in recent decades. Why has this been the case? And how did this happen? In addressing these ques- tions, I want to suggest that the main reason for the success of Batman in the twenty-fi rst century—a multi-billion dollar Batman industry—has been Christopher Nolan’s return to the darker roots of the Batman story. Like any enduring Gothic fi gure, Batman’s regenerative cultural power depends on his ambivalence, his ethical complexity and moral ambiguity. On a formal level, this ambivalence plays itself out in the tension between Bat- man’s camp aesthetics and the Gothic characteristics of the fi gure; that is, between the campy smirk of the “Caped Crusader” and the furrowed brow of the brooding “Dark Knight.” Historically, whenever Batman is camped to its limit, the Gothic creeps in, returning the character to a darker and more complicated fi gure within the narrative. -

Both films earned glowing reviews from critics, largely based on stellar performances, perspicacious scripts, and the relentless search into the age old question of the true nature of humankind: are we fundamentally good or fundamentally evil?
