The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic returns to America’s Resort™ September 13 and 14, 2019, and the eighth edition of the grand tennis showcase is expected to be the biggest to date. In 2012, The Greenbrier made the decision that it was time to honor its rich tennis tradition with a showcase worthy of the resort’s history with the game — which dates back to the 1890s and includes the Mason and Dixon Championships and greats of the sport like Bill Tilden and Francis Hunter. The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic was the result, and on September 22, 2012, tennis legends John McEnroe and Pete Sampras battled it out on the Har-Tru courts outside of The Greenbrier Tennis and Fitness Center to start was has now become an annual tradition. For the second year, the event expanded to two days and added a doubles match to join the two singles matches, and the growth never ended. In the years that followed, The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic continued to bring the world’s best tennis players to America’s Resort™, and the showcase grew in both size and popularity. Life As Few Know It™ Summer 2019 40 YEARS AGO Golf at The Greenbrier Graduated The Greenbrier’s place in golf history had already been cemented by the mid-1900s. From golfi ng legend Sam Snead, who served as the Golf Professional at America’s Resort™ from 1936 through 1974 — later returning as the Golf Professional Emeritus from 1993 until his death in 2002 — to presidents, dignitaries and celebrities who walked the fairways and putted on the greens, those who understood golf in the United States knew all about The Greenbrier. But it was an event 40 years ago this year that really crowned The Greenbrier as one of golf’s ultimate destinations. In 1976, The Greenbrier hired Jack Nicklaus with one goal in mind, rebuilding The Greenbrier Course to host the Ryder Cup in 1979. The course, which had opened in 1924 had the pedigree, but some changes had to be made for it to host the best in the world. So, for 22 months, Nicklaus and his team focused on every hole on the course. The greens were rebuilt, a lake was added, the number of bunkers was increased to 44, and par went from 70 to 72. The new course offi cially opened on Memorial Day Weekend in 1978, but it was introduced to the world September 14-16, 1979, when the 23rd Ryder Cup Matches came to White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. The 1979 Ryder Cup was a signifi cant one. Since 1927, British and American professional teams had competed for the trophy, but in 1979 the British team was replaced by Team Europe, a move that was made to help raise the profi le of the event and make the competition, which had been dominated by the United States since the end of World War II, a little tighter. Captaining the European team was John Jacobs, and his squad was fi lled with big names, including a pair of 22-year-old phenoms in of Spain and of Great Britain. , , , , Ken Brown, , , , and Peter Oosterbuis made up the rest of the European team. 22

Life As Few Know It™ Summer 2019 Remembering The Ryder Cup at The Greenbrier From The Cover

Captained by Billy Casper, the United States came into the competition with no intention of relinquishing its dominance. The team had a strong mix of youth (26-year-old Andy Bean, 27-year-old Fuzzy Zoeller, 29-year-old Tom Kite) and experience (45-year-old Lee Elder, 39-year-old Lee Trevino, 34-year-old ). Tom Watson was supposed to be a part of the U.S. team, but he left the day before the competition began to be there for the birth of his fi rst child. He was replaced by fi rst-alternate Mark Hayes. The rest of the team included Gil Morgan, Hubert Green, Larry Nelson, and Lanny Wadkins. The United States jumped out to a quick start, winning three of the four morning four-ball matches, and the U.S. team won two afternoon foursomes, and halved another, to take a 5 ½-2 ½ lead into Saturday’s play. The European team, though, captured three of the four morning foursomes to cut the gap to one point, and after the afternoon four-ball competition was split to points each, the U.S. team entered the fi nal day clinging to a slim 8 ½-7 ½ advantage. The nation tuned in on ABC Television on that fi nal day, and the U.S. team didn’t disappoint in the morning singles. Gallacher’s win over Wadkins was the only European victory in those morning matches, as Nelson, Kite, Hayes, Bean and Mahaffey all won singles matches for the guys in red, white and blue to take a 13 1/2 -8 ½ lead. The morning domination left the Americans just one point away from claiming victory, and that came easily as Irwin, Green and Trevino all won afternoon matches to clinch a 17-11 win for the United States. The newly redesigned Greenbrier Course went on to host the American Express Championship on the Senior Tour from 1985 through 1987, and then in 1994 it hosted the Solheim Cup, becoming the fi rst resort course to host both the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup. Today, The Greenbrier Course is open as a nine-hole routing, giving golfers an opportunity to see Nicklaus’ vision and walk in the footsteps of those golfi ng greats who made history 40 years ago. 23

Life As Few Know It™ Summer 2019 FOCUS ON True Spec Golf

The Greenbrier Golf Academy has supplied world class instruction to guests and members for decades, and the newest offering assures that the technology matches the instruction. True Spec Golf recently opened its newest facility at America’s Resort™, and it has quickly become a popular spot for golf enthusiasts of all levels looking to improve their game. True Spec Greenbrier features a spacious covered-outdoor hitting bay, a pristine short game facility and Trackman club- fi tting technology. “Combining the wonderful golf tradition at The Greenbrier with True Spec’s revolutionary system of golf club fi tting provides an experience we know our golfers will love,” said Robert Harris, Vice President of Golf at The Greenbrier. “Golfers of every level will benefi t from this new partnership.” So how does it work? First, True Spec Greenbrier Master Fitter, Jake Owen, measures a player’s current set and observes performance. He then works through different combinations of the clubhead and shaft matrix, which includes all major OEM brands. Utilizing Trackman launch monitor technology to evaluate wedges, irons, hybrids, woods and drivers, the best solution is found. “We are going to test their swing and their equipment and see how it performs,” said Owen. “They may already have the best equipment. We may just need to do something as simple as a loft adjustment. But if it’s not the best equipment, we’re going to test every manufacturer from Taylor Made, Titleist, Callaway, etc., and see which one gives them the best performance, based off the specifi cations.” Once Owen and the customer are satisfi ed that they have found the best combination, the order is sent to True Spec’s facility in Scottsdale, Arizona, where each club is hand-built to meet the specifi cations. Golfers usually have their new set within a three-week time frame. True Spec Golf AT THE GREENBRIER

The relationship doesn’t stop there. If the golfer is not satisfi ed with the clubs’ performance, True Spec will refund the money and go through the process again, until the customer is happy. Fitting services range from $125 to $450, depending on the fi tting type. Fittings can be done on particular clubs or every club in the bag. The True Spec Greenbrier facility is located at The Greenbrier Golf Academy, at the far end of the driving range across from the clubhouse. The Greenbrier Golf Academy originally opened as the Sam Snead Golf Academy in 1999. The Greenbrier Golf Professional Emeritus at the time, Snead, the PGA TOUR’s all- time wins leader, gave lessons out of the facility that honored his legacy. “The Greenbrier is rich in history and boasts one of the best golf facilities in the world,” said True Spec CEO Hoyt McGarity. “We’re excited to bring our unparalleled fi tting experience to guests and members of the resort.” True Spec is not the only group occupying The Greenbrier Golf Academy. Director of Instruction Billy Winters, who has been with The Greenbrier since 2005 and was named the best instructor in West Virginia by Golf Digest in 2018, also works out of the newly remodeled facility. Winters gives private lessons, playing lessons, swing clinics, short game clinics, half-day schools and junior clinics, as well as the most popular option, custom Golf Academy experiences. “Billy is an awesome instructor,” said Owen. “I love working with him. It’s great for him to be a part of the process. It’s perfect when I know what he is working on with a player, and I can gear the fi tting toward making sure they get what they need to achieve that goal.” To learn more about True Spec Golf or The Greenbrier Golf Academy, visit Greenbrier.com/Golf.
