PROSPECTUS 2011

Welcome

Vidyasagar College was at the forefront of ushering in a revolution in the field of education in British India. The college, known for its rich, glorious legacy and its immense contribution to the field of education in the country, has its origin in the Metropolitan Training School - later renamed as Calcutta Training School - which was set up by Thakurdas Chakraborty at 1 Arpuly Lane in 1859. In 1860, Vidyasagar became the President of the managing committee of the Training School. In 1864, he was entrusted with the complete charge of its administration and in the same year, he renamed the school as Metropolitan Institution.

Vidyasagar sought collegiate affiliation from Calcutta University and the Institution was granted affiliation for First Arts on 1st January, 1872. This day is celebrated as the Foundation Day of Vidyasagar College. Later in 1879, the Institution was declared a first grade college with BA affiliation. In due course affiliation for the BL course was granted. In 1882 postgraduate courses were introduced and a record number of students passed with flying colours. In 1917, the Metropolitan Institution was renamed as Vidyasagar College. It can be regarded as the first truly secular educational institution in the pre-independence era as the college was entirely run by Indian academicians. As part of the expansion plans, an evening section devoted to the teaching of Commerce was opened in 1922. In 1931, a morning section - the women's department of the college - was established. In 1960, the two sections developed into independent colleges known as Vidyasagar Evening College and Vidyasagar College for Women respectively. During World War II, two branches of the college were set up in Nabadwip and Suri which later became known as Nabadwip Vidyasagar College and Suri Vidyasagar College respectively. The Dawn Society (1902), precursor of the National Council of Education, that later came to be known as Jadavpur University, began functioning from Vidyasagar College.

Several eminent personalities have been associated with Vidyasagar College in various ways - Rashtraguru Surendranath Bannerjee, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, Professor Sisir Kumar Bhaduri, , Rabindranath Tagore, Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, Acharya Jadunath Sarkar, G.D. Birla, Ram Manohar Lohia and Babu Jagjiban Ram, to name a few.

The Institution offers flexible programmes at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels (under autonomous status). It has, at present 20 Honours courses, 21 General subjects and two postgraduate course in Zoology and Geography. One new general course in Education is going to be offered from this academic session. It is the aim of the institution to open more post-graduate courses, job-oriented courses and also to inculcate research aspiration in students. The Governing Body provides efficient and 3

The academic subcommittee deals with the attendance of the students strictly and regular parent-teacher meetings are held Periodical tests are also held to ensure that the syllabi are properly covered and that the students improve their academic performance.

The college library has a vast collection of books - curriculum based text books, reference books and rare and old books including some used by the founder himself. Several departments have well-stocked seminar libraries, too. With a view to supplementing the curriculum, seminars, workshops and popular lectures on varied topics of academic and social interests are organized.

The teachers counsel students on academic and personal issues and a grievance redressal mechanism has also become operative. A health-care unit has been set up to cater to students as well as the staff. Sports, social and cultural functions, science club, cine club and N.S.S are some of the student activities which deserve special mention.

Apart from prizes, scholarships and endowments, free studentship and assistance from the Students Aid Fund are offered to financially handicapped but meritorious students. There is also an SC/ST cell providing statutory educational and financial facilities to SC/ST students. Also a placement cell has been constituted and is working in full swing. Major corporate houses have shown keen interest in our students and an appreciable number of them have been absorbed by such companies.

Vidyasagar College Computer Centre is accredited to the Department of Electronics, Government of India, to conduct CCC, 'O’ level and ‘A’ level courses.

The college is proud of the fact that the first phase of construction of its third campus, situated in CL Block of Bidhannagar, is complete. Currently two Post Graduate programs in Zoology and Geography are run from that campus. Efforts are on to introduce more technology based and job-oriented courses. PROSPECTUS 2011

About the College

Attendance Attendance at classes should be above 75% in each subject separately and in no case should be below 60% in each subject separately. Students with lower percentage of attendance are not eligible to appear at the Calcutta University examinations. Only those students, with a requisite percentage of attendance to be decided upon and notified by the college, will be allowed to sit in the college examinations and the decision of the college is final. Admission of students who fail to attend 75% of lectures delivered in all subjects separately in fifteen teaching days from the commencement of classes is liable to be cancelled. Names of students, who will be absent from College for more than 15 consecutive teaching days without any written intimation, are liable to be struck off the rolls and such students may not be readmitted. Schedule of college tests and examinations All college tests and examinations as per latest C.U. notification will be communicated to students in due course. Teachers’ Council Teachers' Council (TC) is the most important non-administrative body of the college which ensures smooth functioning of day to day activities. The council is presided over by the Principal (as president) with the assistance of the secretary, selected from the council members through election, though in case of a unanimously chosen candidate the electoral procedure can be avoided. The secretary, once elected, forms different subcommittees with help from the President and TC members. These subcommittees take care of the numerous college activities. Names of the members of each sub- committee are eventually ratified by the Governing Body. Alongside TC representatives, most of the subcommittees, barring those which deal exclusively with Teachers' Council issues, have representatives from the non-teaching staff and the student community to facilitate the smooth functioning of the college. The academic subcommittee takes care of all the academic issues, overviews the general performance of the college students in the internal as well as the University examinations, discusses possible future improvement, introduces new courses. Implements new regulations and furthermore strives to improve the general academic level and atmosphere which are the hallmark of a college. The routine and examination sub-committees work in harmony with the academic subcommittee. The former makes provisions for newer courses, decides on suitable time-slots, available classrooms while the latter oversees the entire process of examination (both internal and University examinations). These are the three most important pillars of our college. 14

PROSPECTUS 2011

The admission sub-committee, though of a short tenure, handles all admission-related issues and conduct the entire process of admission during the months of June and July helped by the non-teaching staff and students of the college. The library plays an important role in the dissemination of knowledge. The hundred and thirty six years old college library is enriched with collections that are of historical interest. The library sub-committee tries to upgrade the selection of books and journals with suggestions from all departments. Prize distribution and student welfare sub-committees undertake two very important tasks. While the former inspires the students to perform well by providing prizes to those who have excelled in the spheres of sports, academic or culture, the latter stands by the meritorious but impoverished section of the students by providing aid and grants. The placement cell plays an instrumental role in establishing a connection between the college and the industrial houses so that the deserving final year students can directly join services from campus interviews. The magazine and TC journal subcommittees continue with the same academic aim by bringing out properly edited students' magazine and Teachers' Council journal. The NSS and NCC sub-committees strive to make a complete human being and a proud Indian out of students. The former relates the students with social issues by organising various activities like health camp, blood donation camp, mother and child care camp, slum cleaning, etc. The latter, though at present temporarily non-functional inspires the students to join the NCC and thereby promote national integration and progress. Finally, apart from academics, the college has several cultural and recreational activities. Some of the members of the council are gifted vocalists, instrumentalists and writers. The college basks in the glory of their presence in the council organise cultural programmes from time to time. Tours and picnics and informal get-togethers are organized to maintain healthy interaction among the council members. These activities are handled by the cultural and tour subcommittees. Siksha Karma Union The Siksha Karmi Union a democratic body consisting of members of the college nonteaching staff. The members of the union help the administration of the "liege through their active participation and representation at all times. The members of the Union organise the AM Bengal Cricket Tournament. Vidyasagar College Students' Union The student's union is a democratically elected body of the thirty six Class Representatives representing different classes and sections with a member of the teaching staff, nominated by the Principal, in the office of the President. An Election Commission comprising teachers appointed by the Principal / Governing Body conducts the election in which all regular students of the 1st and 2nd year classes exercise his/her franchise. The General Secretary of the students' union, of which all students on 15

PROSPECTUS 2011 roll are members, is an ex-officio member of the Governing Body He is also associated with each and every programme and development related to the college. Students' union organises various activities. It starts its programme with the annual college picnic in the month of December/January. Then the Inter-department cricket tournament is held along with annual sports in the month of January/February. They also organise "Barshabaran" (a cultural programme) which is celebrated to welcome the Bengali New Year in the month of April. Blood donation camp and health camp are held in collaboration with Vidyasagar College N.S.S unit in the month of August. An inter-department football tournament is also held in which students of different sections of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year participate. A fresher’s welcome, called NABIN, and is held in September. Next comes the turn of inter-department cultural tournament along with the common room tournament also held in the month of September. Students' union also organises an annual social function named "utsav" which includes various cultural programmes. It is held in the month of October before the puja vacation. It also organises mother and child health check up programme in collaboration with Vidyasagar College N.S.S unit before puja vacation outside the college premises. The College has a 'Science Club' in memory of former student Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy and a 'Cine Club' in memory of former student Sri Debaki Basu. "Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy Memorial Science Club" and "Debaki Basu Memorial Cine club” organise a science exhibition and a film festival every year. Academic activities Before the start of every academic year each department holds exploratory meetings presided over by the Head of the Department to earmark portions of the syllabi for each teacher. A timeframe, too, is made beforehand, so that the teachers have adequate time to prepare and discuss their portion of the course as well as to get a feed-back from the students. Mid-term departmental meetings monitor the progress in this regard. Some departments display weekly teaching plans on the departmental notice boards. Regular periodical class tests ensure that the syllabi are properly covered. Heads of the departments regularly interact with the Principal in this regard. Tutorial/additional remedial classes are held as a matter of course. Also, examinations are held regularly to assess the academic attainment of students. The Academic Sub- Committee and the Examination Subcommittee jointly determine the norms to be followed in these tests and examinations. Academic Calendar, issued at the beginning of the academic year, lists the teaching programmes, examination dates and holidays. Post-graduate classes in Zoology are conducted by the college in its Bidhan Sarani campus. Along with a brilliant faculty* there are new laboratories with the latest equipment and instruments to facilitate pursuit of higher and specialized studies.

Apart from supplying scrumptious snacks and tea at the most reasonable prices, it is the favourite rendezvous for all students when they have some classes off. A fierce debate on current issues, discussing the latest developments in art and culture, or passionate support for one's favourite player or club, form the ethos of the canteen. Ongoing developmental activities The former Vidyasagar Hostel was given by the West Bengal Government to the college for its exclusive use. At present, the heritage building is undergoing extensive renovation and a large part of the work is on the verge of completion. Already some classes are being held here and the Department of Computer Science and the post- graduate department of Zoology are functioning from this building. The college is planning to start here some new courses shortly. The college has already started developing its 60 cottah campus at CL Block of Bidhannagar. The new G+2 structure will be in place shortly and the college plans to start new post-graduate courses, research projects and job oriented courses at the Salt Lake City campus in the near future.
